Suck on this you "Its all about the OIL" Lovers

550 metric tons of yellow cake uranium was removed from Iraq over the last few months in a clandestine operation by US and Canadian forces. The highly purified uranium was guarded by US and Iraqi forces until a means to stabilize and remove the substance was formulated. While the yellowcake itself must be further purified for use in a nuclear weapon, it is clear that the uranium was not in Iraq for peaceful purposes.

Funny, your source link points to www.rightpundits.com... which references www.macleans.ca... which gives:

Odd also, this wasn't on mainstream news. But then the war never was about WMD's..except for about the first 5 minutes..

PULEEZE! If they had found even a pound-and-a-half of this stuff it would be all over the news (FOX especially). With Bush in negative numbers he'd do anything for this kind of find. This is such a load it isn't even funny.

Nice post. I'd come across that somewhere and was going to post myself. But I couldn't remember where I saw it. So maybe there were some WMD intentions.

Have you got a real, verifiable source for this or is this just more ramblings pieced together from Bush apologists?

I Googled for any news stories revolving around the Tuwaitha Facility, the only thing I could find is that some radioactive materials were looted from there in 2003 while the Iraq Survey Group was active there:
www.washingtonpost.com...

But the amounts their talking about sound punitively small compared to 500 tons...

Either way I'm calling bullsh*t on this story until there's a half decent source for it.

With such a monstrous find like this by the US military I would be expecting FAUX News to jump on this like a lion going in for the kill and start praising Bush for being right all along.

Even if this story were true, yellowcake is not a WMD. Try again. The war is more likely about keeping countries in the middleeast(except Israel of course) destabilized, not just about oil anyway.

American military personnel helped move about 600 tons of uranium in the form called yellowcake. It had been stored at Tuwaitha, an installation 12 miles south of Baghdad, which had been the site of Iraq’s nuclear program.

I don't think anyone would deny the ultimate reason was oil; I don't think it was oil in the manner it's currently bantered about, however.

There are many reports from defectors that WMDs and Material were taken to Syria to hide from the inspectors.

That would go along with the hidden and burried MIG aircraft they found in Iraq.

It's discouraging sometimes, to see the same stories, again and again on ATS.

But at any rate, here's the skinny on this story.

There /was/ 500 tons of Yellow cake Uranium shipped to Canada from Iraq.

edition.cnn.com...

However: it's low grade industrial/medical grade, not weapons grade.

AND, it was discovered in 1992 by the UN inspections and put under seal and locked away.

In the period 1979 through 1982, Iraq procured yellowcake from both Portugal and Niger and uranium dioxide from Brazil.

...

The yellowcake procured from Portugal was supplied in two batches. Batch 1, received on 20 June 1980, consisted of 429 drums containing 138,098 kg of yellowcake and batch two, received as three consignments over the period from 17 May 1982 through 20 June 1982, consisted of 487 drums containing 148,348 kg yellow cake. By letters dated 6 August 1981, 1 June 1982 and 21 July 1982, Iraq notified the IAEA of the receipt of this material, which confirmed the complementary notifications received from Portugal at the time of shipment.

www.iraqwatch.org...

Tuwaitha and an adjacent research facility were well known for decades as the centerpiece of Saddam's nuclear efforts.

Israeli warplanes bombed a reactor project at the site in 1981. Later, U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had been stored in aging drums and containers since before the 1991 Gulf War. There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said.

ap.google.com...

So, basicly, this is not the WMDs that some are so desperate to have found.

The yellowcake removal from Iraq is a true story (see above). As a previous poster noted, yellowcake is not WMD. It would take a considerable amount of refinement just to make it usable in a power plant. I don't believe that Iraq posessed the refinement capabilities, or at least not officially -- I think Iran is the closest country to Iraq that can refine uranium, but I could be wrong about that.

Cheers

About 550 metric tons of yellowcake concentrated uranium were recently shipped out of Iraq. It had been part of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program. That much was recently reported by the Associated Press .

That yellowcake stockpile pre-dated 1991, and had been under the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency "safeguard" from then until 2003. That was mentioned in the AP article and I mentioned it in the update to my article the day it was published.

A non-story, non-issue. Perhaps that's why there was no Media circus over it. Then again, it's still a wonder that they didn't have their spin with it anyway... wouldn't be the first time.

One word: Debunked.

The Bush administration's senior weapons inspector said in a report released last night that it was ''unlikely'' that Saddam Hussein's forces moved weapons to Syria,

query.nytimes.com...

he investigators "found no senior policy, program, or intelligence officials who admitted any direct knowledge of such movement of WMD."

You would have saved yourself some grief if you had been diligent and researched that this is the same ore that was sealed up by the UN inspection team in the 90's. I can't imagine why anyone would think this is 'evidence' of WMDs.

Any real evidence from real sources (other then media)?

Also you must have missed the rumors about Russian military helping with the move.

I know you missed all the information and photos of the hidden and burried MIG aircraft.
