Interesting topic. I wonder if this feed back will go away on Feb 17, 2009. That is the day the U.S.A switches from analog to digital signals.
Here is some info from our beloved government.

Wow - I too, have heard that sound. It comes from both my clock radio (only when the radio is playing) and my computer speakers. There does not seem to be a pattern to it, though I have noticed that it happens often around 3am CST. A couple of times it occurred just before my cell phone (Cingular/AT&T now) rang, so I dismissed it as just that; however, many other times it occurs without my cell phone ringing.

Could it be a Vogon ship sending out it's notification of a soon-to-be interstellar bypass???

only reason that noise is made is when you are receiving a cell phone call. Sometimes I hear it right before I get a call. It's just interference and nothing more.

You have a crap recording studio then since you have no shielding worth talking about. Microwaves drop off on the Inverse Square law. it takes A HELL OF A LOT of power to go great distances. Ie., you must carry your mobile next to your microphones to get that kind of interference.

Not necessarily. Mobile phone interference will gets much worse when you get it near amplification. You will find that even holding a phone next to a mic won't produce much interference (although you may get some with phantom power on). Line amps, guitar amps, headphone amps, basically anything that amplifies the signal; get a mobile phone near any of these and you will get massive interference, shielding or not.

It happens to me, whenever I turn on my pc, and again with incoming calls via Skype. In fact "hands down" no BS, it just happened when I tried to post this message. I live in Denmark, so this phenomena it's not just a " U.S " problem. That is, if it is a problem, who knows.

OK, thanks. Whatever it was it was almost painful to the ears, a piercing sound.

It's a result of cell phones...it will probably occur less as we all switch over to digital...the air waves are just polluted with needless signals...because of this, I'm so glad we have the FCC

Mobiles are DIGITAL nowdays unless u live in backwater America and we get these microwaves, basically the microwaves are inducing a current in the wiring of the speakers and that is what you hear.

My provider is O2 and this 'handshaking' signal interferes with everything - tv, pc speakers, FM radio, car radio (even when the radio is turned off) and even my landline. It's an absolute pain in the neck and I have to make sure my mobile is nowhere near speakers or FM transmitters. Now my husband's transferred to O2 we get it twice as bad! When he was on T-Mobile it wasn't a problem.

Busted.

Cell phone transmission, having worked in a few call centers I recognize that sound very well. You can hear it over your headphones if the person next to you or yourself forgets to turn your cell phone off. It happens during text message transmission and before a call to the cell phone. It is one of the most annoying sounds ever, it transmits in a fairly large radius as well. Up to 20 feet away from the phone. Turn your cell phone completely off and you shouldn't notice it anymore.

It is simply rf interFEARence which can be measured with an oscilloscope and identifed in the frequency it resides. Just more cancer causing agents...better put on your tinfoil hat

I KNOW WHAT THIS IS! This is what happens to my stereo when my cellphone is next to it, and when someone is trying to call, or txt, right before then, it MAKES EXACT SAME NOISE!

*** I just tried recreating this by calling myself, will try again soon. Take my word for it

If in the far chance that it is not an earthbound signal then what if its a code of some sort? many people have said they notice a pattern to it maybe if we could jot down notes and try to decode it?

Or

It is just interference from some earthbound source and has a man made source, thats what I have thought it was at least.

Its just interference from phone signals. It happens all the time for me, even when I'm not getting calls or texts or anything, just the phone communicating with the tower.

I know EXACTLY what is making that noise. A cell phone close to a speaker right before the phone rings. I can always tell when my cell is about to ring because that EXACT noise goes through my Bose radio by my bed or stereo in my pickup. That EXACT sound. Noticed it about 3 years ago.

Wow, I never realised this was such a mystery to so many. It happens on a regular basis for me.

Would this also be some type of interference?

I have an outside security camera hooked up to a tv inside. Nothing else is hooked up to the tv except electricity. (no cable, sat., etc.) Late at night and only at night letters and unrecognized (to me anyways) symbols fill the screen kinda like cc would do across the bottom. Except like I said it will fill the whole screen and constantly changing, different colors too.
