I appreciate all the posts talking OF the possibilities of other life and the percentages for and against , but i was asking about What IF ..

I wanted to try to see things from a different angle as opposed to the usual "are they here" , "when they get here" trying to possibly find out how we would deal with the situation. Then we might possibly (i said possibly) get an idea of how a more advanced race may deal or are dealing with us ...

Ok .. my Question is:-

If we were the most advanced (NOT saying we are) But IF , and say in 100yrs time we have the means to travel at a fair speed in space , We happen upon a world orbiting a star just like ours , We find a race of humans spread across this new planet , the technology is that of the sword and the arrow. What do we do ?

Do we learn from our mistakes in the past ? go in all guns blazing? or find the strongest group and guide them through to a better way (if there is one) of life ?

Regards to all

Git

Edited for an after thought:-

Wouldn't it be funny if we were quarantined on this planet as like an experiment gone totally wrong , like in Jurrasic Park where the Island is way off limits ... Sorry its a little off but it just came to mind

Maybe we should leave the guns blazing decision up to Bush Jr. Jr. Jr. Since his great grandaddy did such a wonderful job in solving our OWN worlds issues today....(sarcasm)

If.....out of the 100 billion stars in our galaxy and all the stars in the estimated 400 billion galaxies in the 'universe'.....Earth had the only 'intelligent' life......

then there should be another 'big-bang' and the Universe should start over agian and hope for better results.

Yes......I do not hold alot of faith in humanity......we will eventually destroy ourselves. We can't even get along with each other......how in hell would we be able to get along with another race...especially if that race didn't resemble a human?

Of course we're not the only one's in the universe. The idea is actually absurd. Odds alone dictate there must be many, many other civilizations out there.

There are approximately 10,000,000,000,000 stars in our galaxy.

There are approximately , 10,000,000,000,000 galaxies in the universe.

That means there are approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the universe.

We have found hundreds of extra solar planets around stars in our little corner of our galaxy alone. There are obviously huge numbers of extra solar planets out there so why is it so difficult to believe that there is life out there? Life A LOT older then us?

So of course there are many, many civilizations out there, some immeasurably older then ours with the technology to reach us if they so wanted.

Do I expect some advanced aliens to come and save us? I highly doubt it.

Are we screwed?? only if we want to be.

Here's a good movie line:
I'll tell you one thing about the universe, though. The universe is a pretty big place. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space. Right?

All along i have said IF and i do not find it at all difficult to believe , im just trying to turn things around ! As i have said all along we , us , earthlings , well , some of us seem to be holding out for some great saviour or event to rescue us from ourselves, personally i do not think its going to happen , well not in my lifetime.

I know where your coming from with the amount of stars and galaxies and there should be some sort of life , but , we dont KNOW for sure do we ?

Not a bad movie line at all ...

Interesting thread.
Well I doubt we are the only ones. The Universe seems specifically tailored made for life to evolve. Some of these lifeforms are bound to be vastly more intelligent than we are. If these Aliens are benevolent and happened to stumble upon our planet, they would probably consider us all insane and put us all under quarantine. Basically we are going no where until we get our act together and they certainly aren't going to introduce themselves anytime soon or help us out directly. I also can't imagine why any Alien species would want to baby sit us either. It would drive them insane.

Lets be honest, most humans would probably run a mile or fire off a shotgun if they came face to face with an Alien, especially if it looked like a 7ft bug with beedy eyes. I know I would.
Run that is.

If we are the only ones, then what an absolute waste of space. If true, God's definitely got a sense of humour and the joke is on us.

This subject is so complex. You could talk for years about it and still be no closer to the truth in regards to Aliens and the universe at large. I guess that's what makes it so interesting. Your imagination is limitless.

Most people tend to talk about Aliens in a physical sense but I personally believe there is also a spiritual or metaphysical aspect to it, that we can't afford to ignore. It will be on that level where we will first make contact and also learn to communicate and understand each other.

If we were the only life form in this universe you don't know how sad it would be. It would be like stepping out of your house for the first time and finding no life but yourself. The universe is void of life and there's no need for the universe without life. And there's nothing more to do in this universe, and we would probaly destory ourselves faster.

As for finding less intelligent life, we should leave them be and observe them from a distance. Or maybe we could fast track their progress and hand them our latest technology
. If only a more advanced race did that to us.

Too much about, but God bless the dreamers.
Don't know why so many folks can't stand the idea we are alone...make it worth it.
Feel some mold is growing under a rock somewhere, or an cell in water, but someone to build a star-ship.....come on.
Its up to us to get a grip, no one is going to help you.

No one, well me anyways is expecting someone to build star ship to save us. There are totally different races out there and it would be very interesting to find them.

You have to believe in god and we're so special thing to think we're the only one in this universe. This is the same thing as the Earth being in the middle of the universe because 'god' created us...

I belive in both a higher power and other forms of life. The universe is way beyond imaginations. Life prob exists on many planets, comets, moons etc. Are we not on the outskirts of our galaxy? Pretty far away from the cluster? Eh, Eat more chicken =)

Or maybe He was showing us that we are special, and unique?

And therefore have a unique responsibility?

I think it's that kind of thinking that pushed our development back by centuries. I believe in a creator, but religion is the enemy of scientific/technological growth.

If we should find a backward planet, the same will happen to them that happened to every single country/continent that was found by European explorers; Africa, Australia, India, America, etc.

EDIT: As for the topic, the probability of us being the most advanced race in the universe, never mind the only one, is so small that it is inconceivable. Earth has been visited by aliens. Read the Bible for proof.

If you're looking for proof of God, I'll agree with you, but we're talking about proof of alien visitation in the past. The Bible is a combination of myth and a history of ancient man's encounter with aliens. "God" and the "angels" in the Bible were aliens. This theory has been around for ages and I'm sure you'll find a few sites about it.

If we are the only planet with forms of life in the universe, then, as unlikely as it may seem (from the variety of life we observe here and the intriguing nature of stars and planets near to us in cosmic terms) that would simply be it. If there was no life at all, there would be nothing to worry about and nothing alive to worry about it. So if it is just constrained to Earth, it would be natural to ask the questions we do since we would be here to ask them, regardless of the apparent vastness of the "lifeless" universe.

Doesn't matter what i look for. Just look at the Earth is flat concept and Earth being in the middle of the universe...

For me personally, IF we are alone I am more than very OK with that. To this point there has been nothing to provide any data that there is other life out there let alone visiting here. Without any concrete proof I dont go out of my way to delude myself into thinking that other life forms are hiding just out of our range of sight or just beyond what our technology can gather data on. I do speculate but try my level best not to base theory on it. So, in my mind we are and have been alone since this game started. No angst for me. Thats the empirical side.

On the speculative/dreaming/wishful side, yeah the numbers are just stupifying in favor of life and habitable worlds, hey, maybe even intelligent spacefaring life, being out there. Massively incomprehensible numbers still do nothing to prove life exists out there, but it does help very much in making it much more probable. It may be possible that we maybe be just 10-20 years away from being able to sense this at great distances. As far as that life being in regular commute to here, I think, based on the overwhelming lack of verifiable evidence, that it isnt happening, yet. IF it is then it is hands down the best kept secret on the planet and they who are responsible for keeping the secret are much, much better at doing it than I ever thought they could be.

I do agree with what you say about the book itself, and "alien" connection very well could be someday shown to be at the least probable or maybe even true, your statement is still nothing more than a collective interpretation of ancient texts and speculation. A belief.

Being a somewhat technologically advanced society our ruminations about our past and how some people interprete it are pure reflection of our current mindset and culture. 150 years ago the idea of what was being described in the bible was very different from what we try to imagine today, not because they were any less intelligent, but because they were reflecting the ideas of their current culture state.

All in all, there really is no way for us today to get our heads and mindset in the same place that people 2k to 3k years ago were at. What is being described in these books and writings could be no more than a mixture of poetry (all the rage in those days), very old stories being passed on and a heavy dose of anthropomorphism, also very prevalent in writings of those days. Sometimes it simply is what it is.

The reality is that unless these "off-worlders" actually exist and come back to lay it out for us as it really played out, these writings are no more than the product of than very imaginative, scared and relatively ignorant peoples trying their best to understand life and the world around them the best they can, the same thing we are doing today.

I would LOVE for all of this alien intervention stuff to be real, man what good movies this would make! All my stinkin opinion, makes sense in my head anyhow...

Did I go off topic? Srry if I did.... I think I mentioned and alien or two

Right so the Majority here think there is life, a few think it may be some sort of concienciousness(hope i spelt it right) .. me im on the fence still..

Not really too sure if the what do we do if we find it question was answered , But i think oldman has a tale or two to tell and i would be more than happy to hear them ...

So .. where's the Best place out there to find life then ?? lol .. just kidding

Thanks to all for your posts , but if you have more input keep it coming!

Regards to all of you

If we are the only life, and supposedly intelligent life, in the universe then we had damned well better get our act together because we are running the risk of blowing the whole gig. And, that really would be a waste.
