Paperclip was after WW2 I believe. The US entered the war for other reasons not for german technology. They may have benefited from paperclip after the fact but I don't believe it was a primary reason for involvement.

I believe, although somewhat misguided, the current efforts underway are an attempt to deal with true terrorism. US citizens are not "loosers" but people like you and I. It isn't all about profit there are many many incredible contributions that the US has made to the world and I for one am grateful.

So many fine answers to this misguided OP's post, I am left with little to add without repeating what has already been said. I will add a frightening point.

How much longer?

How much longer do we have before the rest of the world stops stating "I don't hate the American people, I just hate the government".

When does the world say enough is enough, that American people are just as guilty as the American Government if they do not do something to fix it. We need to take responsible action and take our leadership back from the corporations that are pulling the strings.

No more people making statements like "we need a strong military for our own protection"

Our military is purely built to go on the offense, to be the strong arm of the corporations. Defense of our country has nothing to do with how our military is built. We have become a dictatorship with the face of a salesman.

We squander our national treasure on the war machine while we cant even afford health care. While our children don't get a proper education, yet the average Joe says "we need a strong military" "We need cheap fuel" "we need to stop terrorism"

What we need is our heart and soul back. Thats what we need.

Before the white man came, there were HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of natives living in the Americas. Where are they now?

American here and while I found the OP offensive in its myopia and asinine line of questioning, yours was the post that made it worth the time I spent reading this thread. Thanks.

For the rest of the world, there are those of us here who have in fact been nothing shy of utterly miserable for the last seven years. We're the ones who didn't wave our flags or put "W" stickers on our cars in 2001 because we saw a fervently dangerous patriotism building up that was frankly quite scary. But we're the new powerless -- we have no real control of things over here anymore.

I dunno what it was like for the rest of the country during the aftermath of 9/11 and the run-up to Iraq, but the people down here in the South were ready to kill anyone or anything in any part of the world that glanced at us askew or dared to question our total righteousness.

And bear this in mind: our country essentially has the world's largest private militia (all the gun-owning American citizens) in addition to our giant military. There was never any possibility of successful internal uprising between 2003 and 2007. The armed majority was for the war and for everything that came with it. But notice I say majority, meaning that there have always been those of us here who are not bloodthirsty madmen, and it bothers us to be lumped in among them. Until that majority comes to a point where it is ready and willing to hold the government accountable for its vast and criminal insanity, nothing can change here. And it won't matter whether the goofy child president is running things or whether some random washed up hippie is in charge.

In the event that the original poster was serious in his questions, there's his answer. For the greater part of this decade, our country has shown the world that we believe in and are committed to fighting a long, bloody, pointless war in a country that wasn't responsible for the attack that started it. That's the main reason. Did you see al-Zawahiri essentially rejoicing that the timetable bill was vetoed because if it had passed it would deprive them of the opportunity to kill their target of 200,000-300,000 American soldiers (source)? That's right. The enemy is apparently FOR the war. The other major reason is that we put our hands into too many cookie pots -- we want to run and change too many things and other cultures resent the arrogance that our ways are the best. (Conversely, this is why so few people hate, say, the Swiss, who mind their own business.)

This is a completely useless thread. The things you mention are only good things. If you put it like this you must hate a lot of other countries as well or than again maybe the whole world.

I tend to read through your post....look we are so great that we do all those things, well wake up, your country is not the only country that chases after terrorists, or giving much money to foren aid, or get technological or medical breakthroughs. You are not so unique as you wish you may be.. that is what I read through your post. If you put it like this, you must almost hate the whole world because almost every country is doing these things.

Here in Portugal I never saw any of that "indoctrination" when I was a student, but I saw many US Navy ships entering the Tagus river and turning one of it's sides to Lisbon, prepared to shoot if they thought it necessary to "protect" us from the dangerous Communists without asking anyone of us Portuguese if we wanted any "help".
