University Apologizes For Using Slave Labor

I neither did anything to blacks what-so-ever, neither have my ancestors who lived in PA since imigrating here.

Also, I am by no means rich, and whites make up the vast majority of the poor.

10x harder to get into college? Do you realize there are thousands of programs to get blacks into schools, where as there is 0 for whites? Do you know how much financial aid I get? 0 and I pay my own way through working full time. Hard work has nothing to do with your color. When you don't associate with blacks that often (which is not racist) and have no idea about black culture because it simply does not appeal to you (thats not racist either) and the only immage of main stream black culture is on the news, MTV type channles and rap stars on TV. Well, that would be where you get the stereotypical view.

It has nothing to do with slavery.

Then I wasn't talking to you. And I wasn't referring to anything that you did. I don't want an apology from you. I don't want money from you. And if you decide that donating to a black charity is beneath you because you don't owe anything, that's your business. But there are people who owe their entire wealth to black slaves, and thus, to their descendants.

Puck obviously has a problem with black people. I think somebody stole his girlfriend or something before. I mean, he says he doesn't know any black people, but he gets on here and talks about the "black image" and how black people are owed nothing for slavery and subjugation that continues to this day.

Methinks it's the idea that the "greatest country in the world" got much of its wealth and status at the expense of others that push this mentality. Yet, he thinks that groups who benefitted HANDSOMELY from slavery owe blacks nothing. Including the govt that used slave labor in the construction of the Capitol Building and the White House.

you obviously didnt read what i wrote previously. There is a time and a place for everything...take you golds out during a job interview try to speak porperly. But guess what? I also feel sympathetic to proper black people who must live with those stereotypes so why dont people like you STOP stereotyping. We are not all the same. And yes i got into UF its called intelligence ,test scores,and being an great all-around student... my school unlike yourself decided not to stereotype me as well as other black students. You should try it. It opens up a whole new world when you dont stereotype.

UF may be a good school in Florida, but it is by far not a great school when the whole spectrum of schools are being viewed. Not to break your high and mighty streak of course

I said i DONT want an apology from schools/or companies..i dont see the point....Second I never said you were RACIST I said you stereotype. based on the comments you have made thus far...that is what you do..you stereotyped me as well as black people who dont fit your 'proper ' veiw of what we should be. So im a bs'er because i have stated my opinion uh..ok.Third ..i never said florida was a great school, i know its not harvard i never said that . Every major city in American doles out billions of taxpayer dollars to minority contractors every month, with practically no competition, I would say black Americans have hit the proverbial jackpot. On the other hand the taxpayer is getting reamed big time---I guess payback is hell---

American cities tend to not have billions of dollars in their budget. And if they do, they don't spend billions on any specific item.

A billion dollars is a drop in the bucket in large cities and the dozens of metro and suburban cities that make them up.

Roads, bridges, hospitals, public schools, airports, infrastructure expansion and repair and federal, state, county and city buildings and projects, they all add up fast. And property taxes and a host of other taxes have been shooting through the roof every year just to keep up with insatiable government spending

I lived in my city for more than thirty years and construction has never abated, and the city has sprawled out like a huge octopus that just keeps growing.

Most cities are the same way.

Your thoughts said volumes to me, and they are far removed from my own. Why is it that someone's dad can steal someone else's dad's house, and after they die, if the son of the victim asks for his house back, it is an outrage? It seems like some people don't even want to give back the mailbox.

I admire Malcolm X, and it was a great loss when he was killed. In many folks minds, people who speak out about oppression are whiners. Some likely are. Some are just telling it like it is. Racism is alive and well in Canada, I'll say that. I learned a little bit about what it is like to be on the receiving end of the equation. If you can believe this, here, Native people are treated even worse than black people, and black people don't get a fair shake more often than not.

In my family, some close relatives are blatantly bigoted, and yet furiously deny it.

I for one fully accept UVA's apology coming from a family whose roots go very deep in the area. First, let me explain the UVA is located in the Shenedoah Valley in northwestern VA and happens to sit right under the watchful eye of Monticello. Thats right, Thomas Jefferson's plantation. He was the founder and builder of the school. He used slave labor to build both school, plantation and basically the whole county of Albermarle. My mother,aunt and grandmother used to joke that my greatgrandmother said that we were decendents of his as he used to sneak down to the slave quarters to have his way with his favorite "possessions". Unlike my mother,aunt and grandmother, I was told that she didn't joke much if at all. I guess that is how my aunt, grandmother and I were born with hazel eyes that change color and gradually turn grey in our later years as well as our very light complexion.

I doubt that there will be any reparatiions unlike the Jewish community from The University of Virginia or The Bank of New York. Also one of Thomas Jefferson's contributions to this great country. LOL

Otherwise it is a great place to attend from what I hear and see. It has a nice mix of nationalities as well as a very clean campus. UVA basically owns the whole area and are currently buying everyone else out.

I have heard forgiveness is more for the forgiver than the forgivee, and if so, your acceptance is of value to the UVA and helps the quest to make the future more loving than now. I support finding some way to greatly speed up the process, and feel the best route to take is via a massive campaign to address poverty worldwide. Until the disparity is erased, division is assuredly going to remain. Societies which have must do much more than they are in the effort to fight poverty.
