It doesn't make you a gangster it makes you a stereotypical black person. You are one of the reasons why black people are viewed in a negative view

And you're thing about white people and racists...um...makes no sense. Sorry.

Excuse me.

*steps back and tries her hardest not to write something that will get her banned* okay.........

You do NOT know me. I am a young black female who grew up with a single mom who worked two jobs. I currently attend the hardest college to get in, in the state of florida (UF) and I have a full academic scholarship and i have a job. I also plan on gong to law school to become a defense attorney. I have never been arrested and do not have any kids. Dont you DARE say that i am the reason blacks are viewed in a negative way. You wouldnt be bold say that to me in the street, but since we are online you think its okay to offend people. I was just trying to point out that your logic was wrong. What if I said that you are the reason white people are viewed in a neg. view based on what you have said.(im assuming ur white i dont know.) you wouldnt like that would you?

You talking in ghetto slang and talking about shootings, etc. does not help the image that black people have to face and does make the stereotype worse. Accept it or not, I don't really care.

I would draw a diagram for you about exactly what I was talking about and fax it to you, but I just don't have the time. So let's just say you didn't understand my analogy and we'll leave it at that.

And why wouldn't I tell you that to your face? Would you beat me up or something?

Once again DO NOT patranize me. I dont appreciate it/
My point was that people are dynamic. I can speak ghetto slang but to you that gives black people a bad image?? What doesnt help our image is people like you assuming and generalizing things about a race or subgroup within that race's character. Look at the whole person not just some verses or some words. Would i beat you up? Nope because guess what I'm a Christian. My point in sayng that was to illustrate the fact that what you said was VERY offensive. In real life NORMAL people try not to offend others in person so im assuming that it was your digital ego that made you say that. Or are you that ignorant in real life?

About music as a measure of culture.....By that yard stick... We are both UberShiza

Well Known Thugs.. (But good artists, IMHO)

Snoop Dogg WAS a Crip, and a ADMITTED SATAN WORSHIPER (see "murder was the case")
Tone Loc...Crip
Eric Wright...Crip
DJ Quick was a Blood
N.O.T.S "True Blue" ALL CRIPS, and I think most are dead.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Neutral... (Again good artists, IMHO)

Dr. Dre WTF??? Loved The Chronic... but what's up with the "World-class-wreckin-cru"... ???

People often find things offensive when they know they are right.

The reason why most people who are not black view many blacks as gold treeth wearing, ghetto slang talking, rapping and race card wavers are because those people get the most light. You talking in ghetto slang and talking about robberies or whatever DOES hurt black people's image and furthers the stereotypes.

Do what you want, call me ignorant, I don't care

Okay I'll explain the correlation between rappers and gangsters and al sharpton and jesse jackson if I MUST for the slower individuals here.

al sharpton and jesse jackson-"civil rights" leaders, whenever there is an issue about a black person and a white person or society, they come in and play the race card.

gangsters and rappers-not only are some rappers gangsters or former gangsters, but rappers portray the "thug life" and often sing about shootups and sex and the ghetto as well as using ghetto slang and dressing like gang members (minus the bling bling of course).

So you see my friends, they can be grouped into two categories and thus 2 main perceived images of black people in America today (not all play the race card -though lots of them do. and not all are rappers or gangsters)

For those of you that have problems categorizing things, we do that when things are similar and we can find correlations between the two.

Lesson closed!

Look at the milk calling the cloud white.

Mr. Uber Advanced Logic, you are STILL wrong. Bill O Reilly and George Bush are neo-cons, but they are NOT the same. They have different views on some things. AND, I bet you leave the Aryan Brotherhood out of your list of gangsters. And artists like Mos Def and Common out of your list of rappers.

And, you have the nerve to say Chaos is wrong when she uses the SAME stupid logic you use against white people?

The reason for that is simple; you would make Strom Thurman proud. People with YOUR mindset, but a LOT more power, are the main reason black people are stereotyped. People like Chaos and myself, college educated blacks, are the reason the old-school-George-Wallaces like you hate on us. Y'all can't STAND to see us make strides like this towards success; hell, y'all are still wondering "who learnt them damn jigaboos their letters."

Once agian you are stereotyping do you know how many gold teeth wearing, ghetto slanging, rapping people go to college??? Alot some even go to my school. Did i say i talked about robberies??NO I said i talked about shootout and i specifically said not about ME committing them. damn you act like like i said i plan tem out or something. What hurts our image is racist prople like yourself who ASSUME as oone as they see a young mane with golds that they aren't trying to do something better with their life. Sure there are some who arent doing anything w/ their life but there are quite a few at least where i'm from in fla who are going to college and doing something better in order to prove it to people like yourself

Actually we are on topic. The school apologized for slavery. It was asked was there even a need to apologize and does slavery still affect us today . Some people are trying to argue that it does b/c there is not qual playing feild etc. Others are arguing that its the self made neg veiw of blacks thats keeping them down not the effects of slavery. So in a way we are on topic. My 2cents

ImpliedChaos,

First off, I want to applaud you for making the sacrifices to better yourself. It is commendable, and you should hold your head high. I wish you luck in your future endeavors.

Having said that, how do you expect being taken seriously throwin out ghetto slang and ebonics? You are an educated woman. You don't have to talk that way, do you? It's that subculture that draws you in, I believe. Are you afraid that you will lose you will be any less of an African-American?

Now back to the topic. I believe that an apology is too little too late. It's a nice thought, but it's not like the ones apologising did anything to put the black person down.

Are you serious? I would bet that a very high percentage of ALL people speak in more than one way. I'll use myself as an example. I'm 2nd generation American. My ancestors on both sides came over from Italy. When I hang out with my friends, I say "Yo, how ya doin'?" When I'm at work I would say "Hello, how are you today."

Friends: "Fuhgedaboudit."
Work translation: "I don't think that will happen"

It's not that I have to talk that way, I just do.

You DO know that African American Vernacular English (NOT "Ebonics"
) is a recognized dialect of English, right? And, if Chaos chooses to use it, so WHAT? We have to assimilate in the "professional" setting; we DON'T have to assimilate in every aspect of our lives.

Now, an apology is CLEARLY in order here. They're not going to look into the school history and pay the families of the slaves they used. So, they should have apologized, and I'm glad that they did.

Same thing with the country. The United Snakes of America isn't going to pay black people reparations, so it should apologize, as a nation that used slave labor to make itself "so great." The Snakes apologized to the Americans for stealing their land and exterminating most of them due to their dirty European customs (bathing was a sin in Europe during the colonial period). Of COURSE, they weren't going to give them back their country, but they DID apologize.

That is my point.

Hmmm ..

I noticed that blacks on this thread are rather venomously attacking whites for the way they see blacks..

Its not racist because they do not conform to YOUR views on your self. You should listen to what they say and maybe come to an understanding as to WHY they think the way they think.

Myself for example relate most (there is some rap I like) rap music with thugs, ghetto g-dawgs and slappin bitches n' hoes. I find the music, most rap music, to be disgusting, vulgar, crude, abrasive and comical at the same time.

As for ghetto language..

There is nothing in the world I find more ignorant then people who talk like that. Honestly. Thats my opinion.. call me racist all you want it won't bother me. I am entitled to say what I think, even if it means your feelings are hurt in the process.

To talk like that is not an accent, like many other dialects of English are spoken through out the world, and many different types spoken in America.. like New England, Midwest, Southern, New York Bronx, Boston, California, Northern Plains (really irritating to me actually) and so on and so forth..

No, "ghetto"

I have not attatcked any white person on this board. If you actually read what i have written you will see that i have stated numerous times that i am only asking for certain people explain themselves and showing them that there logic IMO is flawed. If ou fel attacked than that means either you csnt defend yourself (ie you know your opinion is wrong and cant back it up) or you are just imagining an attack when all im trying to do is have a debate/conversation.

Yes i talk using slang..but there is a time and place. I dont go to my boss and say 'what up dawg...holla at me' or something. But when i am not in a professional or otherwise inappropriate setting.. yes i surely do use ghetto slang. and like TRUTHSEEKA stated before it is an actual language. Just because you dont understand/like it doesnt mean it isnt. Also rapper's dont create slang. Rappers get it from regular folks round them but when they put it in a song white people try to say it to be cool EXP. when Snoop started saying shizzle etc ppl on the west coast were already speaking that way but then he puts in a song and 15 yr susie decides she wants to start saying it b/c she thinks it cool or when white people started saying 'bling' (I cant een say that anymore b/c its been taken over)

BTW Being white and having an opinion DOES NOT make you racist. But beng white and having an opinion that is prejudical or conveys views that stereotype blacks is

ROCKPUCK -i would also appreciate it if you stated your opinion regarding the OP (before this thread gets locked b/c i have a feeling it might)

Ah, I think it may end up locked as well

I stated my opinion I think on the first page..

I just think it is a PR move by the college because they want to appear more equal then other colleges to get more students, more aid and more attention. I also thought it rude to do on Jefferson's birthday as it has little to do with Jefferson himself (except that he owned slaves)..

I could understand though, if they made this apology on the universities anniversary, but not on Jeffersons birthday, just screams PR move to me.

Also, apologizing for your past, especially a past you have no control over and no influence over is sad in that your so guilty you think you have to.

(however I honestly very much so doubt that any of these people "apologizing" are indeed sorry at all.)
