Shots, this is for you. Please read, and give me your take on the Lyrics.
What I see are words written by someone with a very negative outlook on life.
Frankly I could think of far better things to write a song about if I had the ability to write music that is. Unlike the individual who wrote that piece of junk I would write something with a positive outlook rather then negative. People will never get anywhere in life without saying I can do it, I can do it I know I can.
That is the voice of experience speaking I started out on the very bottom of the ladder sweeping floors in a factory and worked my way up and I never would have gotten there if I did not have a postive attitute and outlook on life.

Some actually did better then some whites I had for helpers.
Now to get back on topic I honestly feel that with rappers sending the messages they do with bad music (even Al Sharpton called it bad so I know it is not me) indicates the problem lies with their music. (LYRICS) Put a beat to it and instead of calling girls hos or whatever call them a regular name like Mary Ann.
Now we all know he was a success and most everyone liked or at least enjoyed most of his music.

What percentage of rappers can actually sing or play instruments? I'm not being a wise guy, I really want to know and scratching records doesn't qualify.
I'm fed up, we gotta start teaching children
That they can be all that they wanna to be
There's much more to life than just poverty
"Ignorance is the curse of God, knowledge the wing wherewith we fly to heaven"
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin out for the white cop
"'Tis time to fear when tyrants seem to kiss"
They got my homey hemmed up and they all around
Aint none of them seeing if they going straight pound for pound
I gotta come up real quick before they start to clown
I best pull out my strap and lay them busters down
"I am not of that feather, to shake off my friend when he must need me"
“If I got a bitch with me she got ass in them jeans.”
"Sacred and sweet was all I saw in her"

You throw that word ignorant around yet you show no hard evidence to prove your position.

Shots, for every rapper you point out with a negative message, I can point out two with a positive message.

Name another form of music that not only glorifies rape, murder and hate crimes but where the “artists” and their “possies” actually carry out these acts on a regular basis?
3. Kill Women
kill women - die
kill women - die
kill women - die
bitch

Again, I ask you not to make such gross generalizations.
Keep in mind that Harry Belafonte lived in a very different time. And it wasn't the good ol' days

Can we please discuss why he does not trust the police? I feel like we are seriously sidestepping the issue. Attacking rap and rappers when thats not the point. Why is it that sooo many rappers/regular people dont trust the police enoughto help them?

Wouldn't you agree though, that not helping ANY police officer because of the actions of a few police officers, is exactly the same type of stereotyping you're accusing the police of doing toward black people?
I don't know about that.
I think peer pressure plays a more significant role than that.

I wouldn't say a word either if it meant putting my, or my family's, life in danger. The question is, WHO, in the end, is threatening me and my family...is it the POLICE or the PERSON I'm protecting?

Another great example of bad cops...I can't argue that. But does that really mean ALL cops are bad?

I can list tons of stories where doctors neglected their patients.
Are you going to refuse to speak the next time a doctor asks you where it hurts?

There is only one thing I dislike about what you said and that is when you use the term White man. This is not about black or white it is about making a success out of your life.
There are many of African Americans who are much better off then I am and I know it, yet my life was still a success when I look at what I made of myself. Started off as a floor sweeper (god I hated that job) after one week they put me on a parts washer. Two weeks later they asked me if I wanted to train to be a machine operator /helper 30 odd years later I retired as the head set up man of the whole department. I had some African American helpers who had worked their way up the same ladder I did only and they did a darn good job. Some actually did better then some whites I had for helpers.

I understand the use of the word beat is debatable just wanted to clarify that point becaue I myself do not like the beat whiles others might
All Day All night Mary Ann comes to mind and I do think that was sung by Harry Bellefonte. Now we all know he was a success and most everyone liked or at least enjoyed most of his music.

Ras,
What in my last post proves that I know nothing about rap? Please explain it to me, by all means. You just see a different point of view and then you make assumptions because you are offended.
I notice that you didn't quote anything I said in my first Para to argue with. Tell me I'm wrong about what I said there.
Just because I don't like rap doesn't mean that I didn't sample it to come to that conclusion. There are some raps mixed into songs that I like and at least those "artists" can sing and play instruments. What percentage of rappers can actually sing or play instruments? I'm not being a wise guy, I really want to know and scratching records doesn't qualify.

OK, we've determined that shots doesn't like rap, no one likes Bellefonte, I think he has a helluva voice though, but why don't we take IC's advice here. The topic?

If someone wants to continue this line of thought, the Music forum in BTS or Social Issues on AP would be better imo.
