What you described is not unlike much that I have witnessed as being a half breed. Many white people are very cordial to other races to their faces. But, as soon as they are amongst themselves, the jokes begin, and I have had the unfortunate experience of hearing this first hand because as they later said: "They didn't think I was black".

I have to comment on this part.

People that make jokes, etc., when amongst themselves are most likely trying to save face and avoid embarassment from some previous episode. It's a sign of personal insecurity and does not point to any systemic or widespread racism.

This is from a study conducted by sociologist Devah Pager in 2003. I'm having trouble putting the graph in question on here, so you'll have to settle for words and numbers.

She used sets of 4 college students, 2 black and 2 white, who represented themselves as high school graduates as they applied for entry level jobs suited to high school graduates. Both members within each group had a "criminal record" assigned to them during the study. She sent them to look for jobs, in order to determine any discrimination based on jail time or race.

Figure 6 [the graph in question] presents the percentage of callbacks received for both categories of black testers relative to those for whites. The effect of race in these findings is strikingly large. Among blacks without criminal records, only 14% received callbacks, relative to 34% of white noncriminals (P.01). In fact, even whites with criminal records received more favorable treatment (17%) than blacks without criminal records (14%).

The rank ordering of groups in this graph is painfully revealing of employer preferences: race continues to play a dominant role in shaping employment
opportunities, equal to or greater than the impact of a criminal record.

In case you were wondering about the numbers:

White male, no jail time - 34% call back rate
Black male, no jail time - 14% call back rate
White male, jail time - 17% call back rate
Black male, jail time - 5% call back rate

As you can see, in this study black males with no criminal record had less call back rates than their white counterparts; more importantly, they were NO BETTER OFF than whites who had done time. Of course, we already knew what the call back rate would be for black males with jail time...

Once again, you are exaggerating. There was no "genocide".

It's terms like that, and the fact that a very small percentage of people were affected for a very short period of time, in a very small part of the world, that reveals your argument for the overblown drama that you want it to be.

WRONG!!! I am a white man who was married into a black family and I witnessed first hand what white privilege is. I was called down to the police station once to pick up my oldest step son. Seems he had been hanging out with his white friends (this was in Maine in the 80's when blacks composed .1% of the population) when the cops stopped and searched them. A little pot was found on one of the other (white) kids but the police did not arrest the kid they found it on, they arrested my step-son, solely because he was black. We got the whole thing thrown out and the officers reprimanded, but if I had been black, that boy would have ended up in jail.

Are we not in the 21 st century .... Let it go bro .... let it go ... it has been 20 years ... There were alot of things that were different then ... We just begin having Color TV's ... It is total BS that I cannot get a loan that is close to that .. I actually went to a bank and spoke with a lady ... that does this type of thing all day long ... She said it should be no problem to get a FHA loan from the Government for a First Time Home Buyer ... Yet ... I still had to check that little box that she said had alot of affect on the loan ... And yes ... It might as well read White ... check here ... EVERYONE ELSE check here ... I am so privledged ... Pretty sad I have been working this job for 4 years and can't get anyone to finance me a house so I am stuck throwing my money in the trash ... (RENTING) ... yes, I am so happy I am white .. There's another figure I'm looking for right now. It compares wealth accumulation in poor blacks, whites, and Hispanics. And, surprise surprise , the poor whites are NOT poor when compared to the poor Hispanics and blacks.

I should be more civilized like the whites who brand me a criminal because of my skin color...right. And, my new behavior doesn't make it harder for black people; the people who do this crap to me and other black people make it harder for black people.

Face it. Whites have been historically privileged in America. A look at the books can verify this.

Chinese Exclusion Act

An example of a blatantly racist law that lasted for a long time. I mean, the very NAME shows the racism. A comparison with the next law shows white privilege.

Naturalization act of 1790

Excerpt from the act:

..any alien, being a free white person, who shall have resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States for a term of two years, may be admitted to become a citizen thereof.

Another blatantly racist law. Citizenship to the US (ironically in a country inhabited by non-Europeans at the SAME TIME) was restricted to whites. Even free blacks were excluded. So, we can see that white immigrants could become citizens in the US by virtue of their skin color. The white privilege is too obvious here.

The infamous Dred Scott decision of 1856 is one of a number of the Supreme Court's disgustingly racist rulings. From the ruling:

A free Negro of the African race, whose ancestors were brought to this country and sold as slaves, is not a 'citizen' within the meaning of the Constitution of the United States...Consequently, the special rights and immunities guarantied to citizens do not apply to them.

The white privilege could not be clearer from this ruling. Black people, free or slaves, were NOT citizens of the US. So, the special rights and immunities (PRIVILEGES) were NOT granted to people of African descent. Interesting.

Another nasty contribution from the Supreme Court was the Plessy v. Ferguson decision of 1896. The infamous "separate but equal" crap comes from this ruling. Jim Crow and segregation CLEARLY shows white privilege; the separate life, basically, for whites was QUITE privileged, compared to life under Jim Crow for blacks.

It's amazing that most of the white responders to this thread say white privilege doesn't exist when the US was FOUNDED, in large part, on the principles of white supremacy and white privilege.:shk:

ATMs, stores, restaurants ... it's all the same. People who are getting money from an ATM or who are paying in a store or restaurant deserve privacy and space while doing so.
