Gah! There are too many ways to be heavy.

Blisteringly Heavy: Marduk
Grimly Heavy: Burzum
Death Heavy: GOOD Suffocation. All old, some new.
Tech Heavy: I hate to go against Meshuggah but I have to agree with Nile.
Riff Heavy: Black Sabbath
Doom Heavy: Disembowelment. SunnO))) is good too but a BIT ridiculous.
Epic Heavy: Vital Remains
Battle Heavy: Amon Amarth
Gore Heavy: Exhumed
Melancholy Heavy: Opeth
Beautiful Heavy: Jesu
LUDICROUS Heavy: Mortician

I could do this for days. I think I'm just going to stop here.

Awesome! Thanks Sacreligion. This is good info. I almost forgot about the ultimate yeti-metal band, Mortician.

Has anyone mentioned Bachman Turner Overdrive?

I think they may have been the heaviest metal band ever. Not all of them were as stocky as Meatloaf, but there was only one of him, whereas there are four of these lumberjack-looking fellows.

just a thought.

All great suggestions, but there can be only one.

Is, was and will always be the heaviest band on the face of the entire freakin' Earth.

I'm going to have to go with 36 crazyfists . Although they are *HEAVY* they are also incredibly talented. A good mix of brutally heavy music, but they can also me very melodic and poignant as well. Check them out.

Don't listen to a lot of metal these days, but these guys need more exposure...

Gojira

Their album From Mars to Sirius is about as heavy as I've ever listened to and in fact very listenable with intelligible lyrics and a thick, chunky sound.
Best part they are French and Eco-Conscious. Indeed. Whale songs mixed with draining doom-laden guitars. Seriously.

Nice choices altough i think devil driver is a bit meh, still cant shake the coal chamber days.
I lol'd when i saw disturbed at the top of the page that was good for a laugh.
You know what i hate most about metal? How everyone comes up with so many sub-genres of it.So dopey its like nearly every band is its own genre of metal who the hell thinks that shizz up?Its ridiculous.Theres a good example a few posts up^.

A friend gave me The Red shore the other day haven't given it a good listen yet but it seems ok.

Mortician takes the cake for me:

Even though they're a pretty crap band, holy crap, can't deny that heaviness. It's exaggerated really.
