Hi, olaru. Spira. Everyone else. No witty banter today. Just came to hang out. Honestly, I think today that never in my Life have I felt numb or empty as today. it's just complete sadness. Grief. There're no dots to connect. Just the filthy spring of Evil that humans drink from sometimes. That drink hydrates the mind and body with fear which turns to anger which spits out hatred. Homophobia. I find, with this horrific event, that it can be hard to accept that Love is the only solution to Evil, that Light overcomes the Dark, but it is only Love that ever can. It is not a suggestion to Love, it is a command. The World needs Love. It is not a suggestion, it is a command. Now, not at some point in the future. Now. Love now.

I'm sorry, but I always go back to this

olaru, Spira, I felt the Love in your Souls. I love you , too.

I can remember sci fi movies from the 1950s era. The sci fi genre very often was meant to tell us about ourselves now, not at some time in the past or future. One theme was that humans on Earth would have to look to an alien to learn how to be human. A very fitting theme back then, because humans were engaged in a self-destructing nuclear threat from the sky. A threat that touched each human on earth.

We felt that the answer could only come from outside of us, a higher intelligence that either used force or wisdom to make us come to our senses. And maybe that is true to some extant. Maybe humans only change when something from outside of us makes us confront the realities about ourselves now, not how we wished we had been or could be, but now.

It is the initiation right that sets a child on the path to adulthood, a higher self, ready to accept responsibilities for him/herself and those in the community. Initiation rites involve confronting the Darkness in ourselves by immersing in the Darkness of the World. Out of Darkness comes Light, Light overcomes Darkness. And while the threat comes from outside us, true and Eternal change can only come from within, and only if we accept it.

It is time, no, past time, that we as a nation have to grow up and confront our Darkness and overcome it. We must become better. But true change can only come from within, and it is voluntary, up to us to do so. No alien will save us. We must look from Within.

Peace.

Yes

It ain't over until it's over

Funny, we can't know the future, we can only imagine it. I wonder sometimes if imagining the worst is useful or not. I guess we'll find out

Here's to now desert - glass raised

Watching The Princess Bride and thinking about the Reiners. Interesting dynamic. Carl is a vastly superior comedian and writer but Rob is a better filmmaker.

Hey, intrepid! Good to see you here! I'm tending bar again, so what'll it be?.... oh, I see you're Canadian. Well, then, here's a water glass of vodka with ice cubes. That's what I got years ago at a friend's family function in Canada, after I had asked for a glass of water. Boy, did all my Canadian friends like to drink, and still be able to party well, and actually function as fun people.

So, yes, the Reiners. It is good to think of them. You know, I don't think I've ever seen Princess Bride..... I should watch it. I do remember watching Rob as Meathead in All In The Family. Loved that show! Carl is a National Treasure.

I love Canadian comedians. Always have, even before learning they were Canadian. And even after.

I felt so bad for Fort McMurray and your beautiful land. Hella big fire! We have a much smaller wildfire going on down here in California; 150 homes lost, 3 dead. Hot, dry. Some of the smoke drifted up my way high up. It's just the end of June, and I feel like I've gone through enough hot days for one entire Summer already.

Hey, you've got Canada Day coming up! Do you guys celebrate with fireworks like we celebrate our 4th of July down here? For states that don't sell fireworks year round, it's extra special, because we get to set off unintentional incendiary devices legally. But Safely and Sanely.

Well, I gotta go work on calculating everybody's tabs. Doesn't mean they pay 'em. Here.... I started one for you. Buffet is free for you today.... and on Canada Day.

As you can see by our log dates, we show up when we can. Don't be a stranger. Oh, when you get a chance sometime, check out our music and video library that Lounge Noir members have posted over the various pages. Quirky and most appropriate they are, I must say.

So Intrepid - what happened? Did you get separated from your tour? :-)

2 things:

Love the Reiners - it's not an either or thing for me - they both get all my love. Or - a chunk of it anyhow

The Russians Are Coming - a movie I loved

Then - there's this, speaking of The Princess Bride...

Sit, relax - hang... Desert does this mixed drink thing with starchy vegetables: to die for

Yes. To now, olaru! ...It's either great or it's not but we'll get through it. Yes!

Hey, anybody else want "desert's Potato Vodka Special"? It starts out as a Kombucha Moscow Mule, but then I garnish it with pretzels from that bowl over there. Those pretzels make it "special".

Spira, I loved The Russians Are Coming! Speaking of movies.... So, I'm reading this book about one man's personal pursuit of making the perfect loaf of bread. Halfway through, I was super surprised when he mentions my favorite movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Here is what he wrote.

"Drifting off to sleep that night, in a state between wakefulness and unconsciousness, I had a kind of 2001: A Space Odyssey experience, feeling myself racing backward through the centuries, seeing my ancestors living in cities, then, moving back in time, in villages, huts, and caves, all the while growing rye and wheat, planting and harvesting, threshing and winnowing. Growing and harvesting wheat had connected me to the ages, triggering an unexpected awakening. And I hadn't even ground it into flour yet."

52 Loaves, by William Alexander

Why on Earth would I find my favorite movie mentioned in a book about bread? Crazy thing is, it all fit.

olaru, keep makin' them movies!

Happy Independence day kids. Our 240th birthday, with a twist! This year we get to celebrate Britain's independence too!

Well, maybe not celebrate so much as commiserate. I guess it depends on which side of that divide we're standing

Jeeves is on the fence. No, seriously - he's out sitting on the fence, wrapped in a Union Jack, feeding the goats...and camels

Thankfully desert is here to tend bar. Maybe Jeeves needs something with a bit of quinine desert? You know, for the malaria...

It does I think. I wanted to know more, so i went out and read a little bit. I really like this guy. And I think he and Kubrick have some things in common. A kind of obsession

But the bread that you're making, the ingredients, four: water, yeast, flour, salt, with such simple ingredients, why isn't baking this bread a simple process?

Mr. ALEXANDER: You would think it would be. I was thrilled to see that no less a cook than Julia Child asked that same question and what she said is, you know, there are four ingredients, but there seem to be 10,000 ways to use them and that is precisely the problem with baking bread.

NPR

Simplicity, poetry - perfect balance

Kubrick worked with so little - and accomplished so much. An artist that let space speak for itself - by not speaking

Silence is just one ingredient in a film that used so few

I love this movie too desert. Love :-)

The same with your baker. Would (almost) kill to try that bread...

Hopefully everyone sparklers responsibly this year

Happy 4th of July you guys - have fun

Life is very good. Right after the perfect 4th of July. Good friends, good food, and desert made four different drinks for each person. Well received. So getting back here late today.

Finally, just now, I made the Lounge Noir cocktail that was inspired by Spira. It's called, Circling Jupiter. One drink, and you'll be circling the room in a lively spirit like Juno.

don't have exact quantities, but here is what I put together....

in a short, 5 oz, balloon wine glass
pour in a small quantity of dark creme de cacao
place an ice cube gently in the center, to represent Jupiter's core
slowly pour cream over the ice cube (much of creme de cacao will remain at the bottom, while giving the "planet" it's distinctive coloring
slowly pour vodka over the middle
Slowly pour caramel syrup around the top edge of the planet, which will add more element to Jupiter
place a maraschino cherry between the ice and the glass, to represent Jupitet's Great Red Spot

plant an American Flag swizzle stick in the drink to stir

Now orbit the room, engaging in lively talk and flirtations

I'd like one please! Something refreshing after a long 2 wks with Asian female kickboxers, enormous NFL stars, shootin and fightein; all livin the dream for our holy netflix. This old hippy needs to sit down!!!

One Circling Jupiter it is! Say, olaru, as soon as I heard you say "a long two weeks with Asian female kickboxers", I thought, "Whoa, cowboy, keep your stories about your sex life shenanigans to yourself!" Then I realized you were talking about work. Here's to livin' the dream!

Also, olaru, you now have a new Lounge Noir drink named in your honor, the Old Hippy. It's sure to keep an old hippy going and coming. I already have it listed on the board, and it's already been a hit with some of our LN members who are of a certain age. Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger tea, prune juice, vodka, and a garnish of Viagra. Yep, keep ya going and coming.

Why, thanks, Spira! I think we needed to hear that.
And I've opened up the bar, and I will keep it open for as long as we need it. Glass of sherry in one of our beautiful new sherry glasses?
