You're absolutely right. A high atmospheric nuclear detontion is not the only way to produce that pulse. FCG's (Flux Compression Generators) are a very promising bit of tech too.

But remember that this technology hasn't even been operationalized as yet. It's still in the testing stages. So you think Iran is ahead in this technology with FCGs ready to be operationally deployed? Wow! That's news to me.

For strategic/tactical deployment of the FCGs you gatta have very accurate delivery systems incl aircraft and missiles with CEPs of less than 50m, as the footprint of EMPs of an FCG is very small (Point targets/restricted areas only) compared to that of an airburst from a nuclear bomb. Which is about 2500km for a 500m high airburst of nominal yield.

Iran has some decent scientists who would surely be able to do something with that sort of tech, but maybe not who knows. Just thought i would make the point that nukes aren't the only EMP weapons. Also the footprint of an FCG can be resonably big but as you said nowhere near as big as a nuke.

I hope we do goto war with Iran. Their population is full of jihadi warriors all revolving their lives around the Koran. What more reason do I need to support a war against Iran? Must be all the heat they have hallucinations of Mohammed all day and think it's their divine fate to wage war on everything that isnt Islamic.

I hope we do smack them down in a another military campaign. Iran has supported terrorism more then any other country besides maybe Syria and Lebanon. All deserving of US occupation in my opinion. And from the way Iran's president speaks, I doubt it is isolated terrorist militas that are causing problems. I think it's their general culture.

Maybe we can get Israel to invade Lebanon and parts of Syria while we destroy Iran and the rest of Syria. Then put sanctions on Saudi Arabia and stop them from trading with the rest of the world.

Then after that is done maybe the Islamic culture will try and realize there are other people on the planet they have to coexist with in a reasonable manner. If we do goto war with Iran, I am joining the Military that's for sure. Especially if we hit Syria and Lebanon too. And laying the smackdown on the lawless Zulu warriors in Africa would'nt hurt either.

At least it's honorable. If not us then who?

If I was a child in Iran right now I would want a country like the US to come and lay the smack down. Not just invade and kill lots of primitive immoral scumbags, but to try and modernize the country and raise my potential standard of living as much as possible. .

Screw that place. I would nuke them in spite if I could.

I can't believe that people like you actually exist anymore.

Dropping bombs on innocent people is "honorable"?

Since when is killing anyone honorable? What a childish and stupid and shortsighted thing to say.

My god.

The ONLY THING worth killing for is to get rid of people who think killing is the way to fix problems... what we need to do is take a world wide vote.. and get all of you types who think that is the way to go all on ONE CONTINENT.. and let you all experience your infintile fantasies for yourselves.

Because of people like yourself, I almost can't wait for the big one to start because its going to be people like yourself who are the first to die off, and I'm not going to bother explaining to why for the same reason that you are going to be the first. You are going to be peeing your pants when those bombs start going off.. and the bread lines start forming, and the US dollar isn't worth anything in a few days....

... god at least your Daddy will have to disconnect the internet because he can't afford it anymore and the rest of the world won't have to listen to you anymore.

UGH.. my migraine just came back, I hope you are happy now.

Didn't I say a long time ago that I was going to STOP replying to crap like this?

Yeah, sorrry guys.. k, gone.. going to bed..

EDIT: Actually I just reread your post, and I've come to the conclusion that you can't be for real... its just too stupid a thing to say... if not then you don't have a clue about anything... you CAN NOT BE... you can't be older then maybe 12 years old at the most.. and maybe younger. And you know what? I bet 99% of the people here would agree with me too. THAT is how completely insane you sound.. so.. I don't even know why I'm here still.

Probably because I liked the thread when I STARTED reading it.. you know how these things degenerate..

(again, sorry to the rest of you)

Vis Mega, calm, breath, take a valium

Ok joking aside I can understand your anger. If this guy is for real then he obviously doesn't know a thing about the topic he is commenting on.

First off I think killing can be honorable if you apply it to a sort of ancient samurai basis maybe, but you don't see many samurai warriors walking around these days (shame that).

Second, the Koran isn't the problem, it's the interpretation of the book that is the problem. The people who interpret it in such a horrible way more than likely felt that way before reading it and just use it as justification.

Third, no offense to the US (I do like your country honestly) but the US has supported all sorts of actions that could be called terrorist actions. I read a few books by Noam Chomsky and thought the guy was off his rocker, I did some research of my own to disprove what he was saying and well, I failed. What he says in parts is very true, the US and the UK have supported some horrible actions.

Fourth, dropping a nuke is a very stupid thing to do, apart from the fact that it may cause other countries to launch it would have global consequences, political, financial and just plain old moral problems. If your country dropped a nuke then it's reputation in the world view would drop further than it already is. The US is hated by many countries and it is disliked by an even greater number.

And finally, you just sound like a racist, and whoever said earlier that you should be given some leniency because you are only 17 must have been joking. I wasn’t anything like you when I was 17, I applied my brain before speaking.

Going to war with Iran is exactly what the controllers of the world want. They are playing both sides against each other, and all you american trigger happy lunatics are too blind too see it.

War with Iran may inevitably lead to WWIII, which in turn is the next step to the New World Order. Out of the chaos they will take control!!!

Their plan is all going to plan, and we the people are playing it out for them.

So, ImplementofWar, before you rant about destroying nations, cos you see it as good, you should think of the consequences of these actions!! To be honest, even on a moral note, can't believe poeple like you with those opinions!!! It's quite sick!!!!

Have a read of this, a lot of info on why and what a war with Iran will lead to.

If a war with Iran kicks off, then things could be very bleak, including it possibly causing the downfall of the US!!

US debt is less than %30 percent of GDP; at the end of WWII the US was in debt to the tune of %80 of GDP. If you think the US economy is going to have some catastrophic collapse, you’ll have a long wait.

If Americans are so stupid, then why do we have the largest, most efficient and productive economy? Why does the US lead the world in Nobel prizes in science (by a large margin)? Why are more patents issued in the US than in the EU? Why are the best universities in the US? Why does the US lead the world in every important technology? How did stupid American create the telegraph, telephone, airplane, television, transistors, integrated circuits, master the atom, send men to the moon, discover the structure of DNA (the other guy was a brit) create the internet and all the important sites there in?

And lastly, if we’re so stupid, how come we run the joint rather than super smart guys like you?

Huh! Ho! RELAX GUYS!!

It takes all types to make this world. But what the heck, do we have to suffer juvenile delinquents and some who haven't reached the ripe age of puberty as yet?

But do we excuse them and allow rank rascism to permeate many a thread on ATS?

Nowadays posts invariable degenerate into... 'My country is better than yours' syndrome. The usual rant is,
'All other countries are full of idiots, beggars, slaves and terrorists, but my country is the epitome of perfection', etc, etc...

Can one of our Amigos do something about this?
Springer, you out there? OK, so can't we have a system to haul a guy off this site for indulging in obnoxious posts?

I'm sure ATS will be the better for it.

ShadowXIX,

"centirfurge that could make enough material for about 10 bombs a year and complete plans for a warhead"

"This guy was the Walmart of nuclear secrets and technology for decades to Iran, North Korea and Libya and hes considered a national hero for doing it. "

Quotes from History channel special "Iran, the Next Iraq?", a hastily slapped together propaganda "to order" snipit filled with disinformation and blatant errors including editing doctoring.

"Please Iran was never at war against the whole world. When did this fantasy war happen?"

Since you saw the "program", some of the valid information points that Iranians are not Arabic, but Persian, and have never been conquered for over two thousand years, so repelling invaders is in their genes.

blobby, step away from the Xbox and pick up a book, even if you have to figure out how far you can throw it at first, baby steps man, baby steps.

LMAO, another one by our TV "viewer" ShadowXIX,

"Ah the infamous "Basiji" sending thousands of unarmed 11-13 years olds in human wave attacks to get mowed down by Iraqi machine guns with not much more then a little plastic key around their necks they are told is the key to paradise. "

Mr. Shadow, "A good book is a light house amongst the darkness of ignorance", TV being a part of that darkness, so make an effort and shine some light in all that shadow.

And there's yet another TV viewer, digitalassassin, wiht the same old propaganda crap from History channel,

"Is that where you guys run around with fireworks? I heard Ahmadinejad had a bunch of people arrested for that."

Again, dear Mr. digitalassassin, assassinate your TV and READ.

denythestatusquo hit the nail right on the head here

"When the war starts at least we will have something to watch on TV again, I was getting so bored with TV lately."

Proves my point exactly, and it's great to see sarcastic sense of humor popping up once in a great while.

bretmania,

"the pipeline has to go through Iran , the contractors need that property available to do so. its just a big game on a grand scale. "

One of the few reasonable comments on the factual situation.

RUFFREADY,

"Targets have been picked and marked. It will be all by air. Flying out of Diego Garcia island, Iraq and afghanistan. B2 bombers playing a role and also some really good bunker busters that have been modified. It will take no more than two days. Will stand off our Navy to avoid hostile attacks. "

Well crap, if it's that easy, why not the rest of the world? One possible wrinkle though, Iran has been preparing for such an attack since Desert Shield, and managed to acquire and set up a modern air defense network, so we will have sit back and see just how effective those B2 strikes will be.

OMG, here comes ImplementOfWar, and I'm really hoping he sprints to the local recruiting office, picks up a "trusty" M16, and gets clobbered to death by a stick of a 13 year old when it jams. I can see it now, urine flawing freely, muttering prayers to Tammy Fay Baker, the life of trailer parks flashing before the eyes, the memories of WWF SmackDown and the last question in dying brain will Triple H win his title back. Good God.

Born British,

Hi there, nice to meet you. Don't be that hard on us, it's the TV, plus it just might scare and upset the ones with point 87 to shoot something somewhere.

There it is! I totally nailed it, "country like the US to come and lay the smack down", so ImplementOfWar, who's your favorite wrestling "actor"? And do you know that Budweiser used to be decent German beer before it was totally fraked up?

Vis Mega, great post, but unfortunately even though that type of people does die first when they finally get what they told to want, they breed faster then they die, so even in that case war is not an effective population control.

ElTiante,

"US debt is less than %30 percent of GDP; at the end of WWII the US was in debt to the tune of %80 of GDP. If you think the US economy is going to have some catastrophic collapse, you’ll have a long wait.

WRONG! On all counts! Oh my GOD how far gone you are! It's laughable in a fatalist kind of way. If you would like me to take those presumptions of yours apart piece by embarrassing piece, all you have to do is ask, 'cause damn, I say damn, what mildly put "gated" perception you got there. Oh my God.

mikesingh, thank you! But the sad fact is that it's not delinquency, it's grossly degenerated pseudo adulthood corrupted by consumerism, and that's just really scary, because this is what happens when initially normal people are consumed by ingenuously absurd system that robs them of basic human values, and they give guns to these people!

Just to elaborate on how scary it is and reflect on ElTiantes' notion that the "best universities in (are) the US", University of Washington students conducted a nation wide survey of PhD graduates, with doctorates in various applied sciences, and asked them to light up a light bulb with one battery and a wire.

Over 80% of our future mathematicians, engineers, chemists, doctors, ETC, could not do so, all while going into in depth explanations on how it is physically "impossible" to complete an electrical circuit with only one wire.

We're talking about the very basics of cognitive thinking. Something that an eight ear old in other countries does with out even pausing. TV, advertising and plundering consumerism is eating the minds of Americans faster then all the drugs all the actors and pop stars ever did combined, that's how scary it is.

Current (and unfortunate) definition of a modern mainstream American condition;

FAS* imposed physiological condition of manufactured pseudo-individualism rendering one unable to differentiate fact from fallacy.

* False Authority (syndrome)

Last time I had to go to a doctor, I ended up giving my self the diagnosis and had the "doctor" from Kaiser Permanente sign the prescription, not the one he tried to "sell" me, but the one actually needed. I might as well print my own pads and save on the premiums.

Iskander,

That was a bit long and hard to read. Try using quote BBcode tags next time:

[quote]Whatever blah blah blah yada yada. [/quote]

But replace the [curly brackets] with [square brackets] so that you get:

Whatever blah blah blah yada yada.

Or if you don't like quote you can use different font formatting like:

[b]bold[/b] to produce bold text or

[i]italics[/i] to produce italicized text

For example:

Poster So-and-so:(Something poster So-and-so said)

- (Your reply here in normal text)

or

Poster So-and-so:(Something poster So-and-so said)

- (Your reply here in normal text)

Good formatting goes a long way in getting your point accross.

Anyway, now back to your regularly scheduled programme.

To me there is more dignity in destroying every country that is a disgrace to the planet then there is in doing nothing.

If I had nuclear weapons I would nuke over a dozen countries. You have countries in Africa where rape, crime, and genocide go unanswered year after year. You have the Middle East where people live like they did thousands of years ago. You have Asia where you have communism and slavery, censorship, etc. You have parts of Europe and the former Soviet Union that are like the wild west. You have parts of South America and Mexico which is largely made up of drug addicts, pedophiles, sex traffickers and gangs.

If I was a child living in Iran, in a hut, that was being fed food that would never pass inspection here in the US, where I was going to grow up with no chance of a real education, where I was going to be living on a next to nothing wage, and where I had to be spoonfed some wackjob religion. I WOULD EXPECT A FOREIGN COUNTRY LIKE THE US TO DO WHATEVER IT HAD TO DO TO SAVE ME FROM HELL ON EARTH. Even even if I at the time didnt see the truth in that. And even if I was content in my life (only because I knew nothing better). If I was incinerated in a nuclear blast or a stray bomb killed me, great. Would of saved me a life of hell. In heaven looking at the enlightenment of the situation, I would of agreed with the action. Maybe I could be reincarnated as a US citizen. Or into another "Iran" that was worth living in.

Do unto others as you want done unto you. I would want a better life.

Although their countries are probably not as bad as I think. I live an isolated life in the US where I know very little about the world outside my borders, I would probably change my attitude if I knew more. There is probably more good then bad in these parts of the world, I just only see the negative.

Your several hundred words of blathering amounted to little more than “I’m right because I say I am!”

Let’s review my assertions

US Debt to GDP Ratio (it’s 37%, (was 33%) I said 30% so call me a liar):

The measure of government debt watched by people in financial markets is not a nominal dollar figure but a percentage: the debt held by the public (as opposed to debt held by other branches of the government, chiefly the Social Security trust fund) as a share of gross domestic product. Right now that comes to 37 percent in the United States, up from 33 percent when Bush took office, but well below the 49 percent of 1993 to 1995. It's also lower than the debt/GDP ratios of Germany, France and Japan.

Ok it might not be in two weeks but here is the game plan

Air action in Iraq to reduce threat of Insurgents (started today I guess)

Bombers relocating and stockpiling in close range to attack targets in Iran (already in progress, logistics moving supplies)

Setting up heavy border patrol on the Iraq Syria border to prevents Syrian reinforcements from travelling through Iraq to attack US forces in Iraq and hopeing to draw fire from US force attacking Iranian military interest (already being staged at the border)

Moving naval assests in the straights and med to attain best operational areas and safe distances, focusing cruisers and Ageis in defence circle around high value units (being done)

Locating and charting all high value attack targets in Iran (almost done)

Building international supprt in case of pre-emptive strike for a hold off stance and alliance with other potential major powers to not get involved (in progress)

Get UN backing for strong stance on Iran's nuclear program (almost done)

Compile total threat assesment of Iran's war fighting capabilities (done)

Prepare continental US population for possible extended war engagement (debating process and methods)

Ready standby domestic police agencies for possible muslim outrage at home (I think this may come in the next few days)

Repaint some US attack aircraft in ISF colors (probably being done as we speak)

Then when everything is set they will launch a simultaneous US and Israeli air attack on all key Iran military targets About 30 minutes before a massive air drop of leaflets will take place over Iran provoking a response by Iranian Air force to attempt to shoot down the drop aircraft which will be counter attacked by US air patrols. The leaflets will notify Iranains this is the time to revolt, the regime will be ended and to take shelter and do not go near military targets or buildings.

Once air attack wave has been completed, Israeli armor will roll into Iran painted as US armor forces (possibly) or at least running US flags.

CIA ops will begin and take their revolt to the streets

If all goes well within 96 hours the country will be returned to the will of the people.

Payment and settlement will begin with Iran's new politcal party

Russia will return to negotiations with Iran in regards to nuclear energy. Haliburton and the French German company will get new contracts along with Russian energy to rebuild Irans nuclear infrastructure sans war fighting apparatus and since Iraq is no longer a war threat with Iran as US hardware occupies both countrys the people of Iran should feel comfortable.

Play along with the US and no need to worry about policing its border with Iraq or worry about being attacked by any nation in the world. Because that nation would be attacking US forces not Iranian forces. Win Win not only for the Iranian people no longer having to fear from engaging with Iraqi forces but not having to live under a supressive regime. As long as they agree to limit their war fighting capabilities, the US will allow high technology to flurish in Iran.

It all comes down to the people then, will the people of Iran see the people of Iraq as equals and vice versa and realize they have an opporotunity to make a great muslim state or will they continue to harbor anger against each other and both stand in the way of their mutal success.

Only time will tell, but in hopes of the betterment of all mankind that they will stop focusing on their differences in their religious sects and focus on becoming modern nations with modern goals for the equal treatment of its citizens to no longer have to live under oppressive controls of radical religious political systems.

Hey, Wikipeida! That’s a great idea!
Transistor, ICs

On 22 December 1947 William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain succeeded in building the first practical point-contact transistor at Bell Labs. This work followed from their war-time efforts to produce extremely pure germanium "crystal" mixer diodes, used in radar units as a frequency mixer element in microwave radar receivers. Early tube-based technology did not switch fast enough for this role, leading the Bell team to use solid state diodes instead. With this knowledge in hand they turned to the design of a triode, but found this was not at all easy. Bardeen eventually developed a new branch of surface physics to account for the "odd" behaviour they saw, and Bardeen and Brattain eventually succeeded in building a working device.

["Due to its relative objective methodology, the results have often been cited by The Economist magazine in ranking universities of the world.[1] However, the Shanghai rankings have also been criticized for placing too much emphasis on the sciences. There are three Nobel prizes for the sciences (chemistry, physics and medicine), one for the social sciences (economics), one for the arts (literature) and the Peace Prize. Universities with staff or alumni holding Fields medals for mathematics are also rewarded, but awards for achievement in arts, such as the Pulitzer Prize or even the Grammy Awards, are not taken into account."]

["The university ranking business never fails to be both intriguing and controversial. It is unlikely that a set of criteria will ever emerge that satisfy all parties. The same can also be said of the SJTU ranking from which the present ranking is derived. The SJTU ranking takes into account the above four factors and the final score is computed as a weighted sum of the all the listed indicators. This means that certain indicators are given more weight than the rest in the computation for the final score on which the final rank is based. Therefore, if university X is ranked higher than university Y, what is that supposed to mean? Does it mean that university X is “better” than university Y in the general sense? The perceptive reader will readily know the answer as negative. Perhaps It means that university X scores higher than university Y is some areas and the converse is true of other areas. Perhaps it may mean that university X scores better than university Y in areas that are given high weightings and scores worse in areas given low weightings. Therein lies the source of controversy. How are we to judge which areas should be given more weight and which less weight. "]

ImplementOfWar, you spoke true words, and I'm glad to hear them.

["Although their countries are probably not as bad as I think. I live an isolated life in the US where I know very little about the world outside my borders, I would probably change my attitude if I knew more. There is probably more good then bad in these parts of the world, I just only see the negative."]

We all are forced to live isolated lives, not because we lack the desire to reach out, but because we are constantly battered by the "good life" of pseudo-individualism, or "image", which in fact is imposed isolationism. Reach out, learn, scrutinise, and use the best Democratic right we have, the right of informed choice.
