Ukraine on Wednesday halted Russian gas supplies to European customers through its pipeline network after a prewar transit deal expired at the end of last year.
Ukraine’s energy minister, Herman Halushchenko, confirmed on Wednesday morning that Kyiv had stopped the transit “in the interest of national security.” 🤣National Security🤣
“This is a historic event. Russia is losing markets and will incur financial losses. Europe has already decided to phase out Russian gas, and (this) aligns with what Ukraine has done today,” Halushchenko said in an update on the Telegram messaging app. 🤣about time dontchya think🤣
🤣Brilliance of Zelenskyy🤣👇
At a summit in Brussels last month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed that Kyiv would not allow Moscow to use the transits to earn “additional billions ... on our blood, on the lives of our citizens.” But he had briefly held open the possibility of the gas flows continuing if payments to Russia were withheld until the war ends.
Russia's gas transit to Europe via Ukraine stopped on Wednesday, Moscow and Kyiv said, ending a decades-long arrangement and marking the latest casualty of the war between the neighbours. Russian gas has been supplied to Europe via pipelines crossing Ukraine since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991 in an arrangement that earned revenues for Moscow from the gas and for Kyiv from the transit fees.

Russian natural gas exports to several European nations through Ukraine have been halted following Kyiv's decision not to renew a transit agreement that expired on Wednesday. Ukraine had previously stated it would not extend the five-year deal amidst the ongoing military conflict with Russia. Watch to know more!

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico responds harshly to Ukrainian President Zelensky's accusations, declaring that he is not Zelensky's servant. Fico also warns of cutting electricity supplies to Ukraine if the country halts Russian gas transit to Slovakia, setting a January 1 deadline for the decision.

That Russian gas has continued to flow to Europe has always been known. European countries had become way to reliant on Russian gas over last few decades and that takes time to reverse.
I believe the gas exports to Europe are now about 25% of what they were prior to 2022.

Because breaking the agreement would have caused massive problems for countries that Ukraine desperately needed support from.

Never mind I’m sure Moldova was winding up an aid package worth many $B’s.
You’re right.

You’re right.
The US is the single biggest contributer in absolute terms to Ukraine but far from the only one. In terms of gdp or per capita I don't think it makes the top ten but that is beside the point.
Ukraine has received military and financial aid from dozens of countries many of whom would have been massively impacted by a sudden stop in russian gas.
