They had this debate early at the behest of Joe Biden, he picked the date, the venue, the moderators, the rules and he challenged Trump to attend.

The reason he wanted to have the debate early was because he felt he had something to prove relating to the "disinformation" that was circulating about his age.

He was hoping to not have to debate at all; but the Trump trials were not having the impact the Biden campaign was hoping for. This left the Biden campaign vulnerable to the "disinformation" about his age related issues.

Unfortunately for Biden he did not prove what he needed to prove.

Well said and summarized. Everyone still perplexed over why Joe Biden demanded the podium to the right of the moderators, however.

Biden won the coin flip. He could choose to have the last word, or the podium position. To everyone's dismay, he chose having the right podium as more important than having the final closing statement of the debate. Trump delivered it instead.
