Yes, I think this was the first time it was used in combat. Although I saw speculation it was used last year I think, but never followed up to see if that was confirmed.

I have no idea. I feel like if they're going to do something, just hitting Iranian proxies in the region would be pointless. Iran doesn't care about that.

If they really want to send the message that they will not tolerate such an attack as Iran launched, I think they gotta hit Iran directly. If they're not prepared to do that, I think they're better off not doing anything.

Some speculation I've seen is to hit the Iranian drone factories in western Iran. One advantage of doing that is it might piss the world off slightly less than other targets in Iran, since those drones are also being manufactured to be sent to Russia for use against Ukraine.

Edit: I would imagine the US is leaning hard on the Israelis not to fly in with the F-35. While its stealth is good, no stealth is perfect, and the last thing the US wants is one of our adversaries getting their hands on our most advanced aircraft.

If anyone is interested in another perspective, here's a good podcast you can listen to by Marc Thiessen where he talks to Frederick Kagan, who works for the American Enterprise Institute and formerly taught at West Point.

He talks about what Iran did, why, what he thinks their intent was, and what the takeaways should be. One key point is that, while we were able to defend against this attack, Iran will be able to gather a lot of data from how this went down and develop strategies to exploit weak points in the missile defense, as the Russians have been able to do in Ukraine.

It's an hour long, so it's more in-depth than anything you're gonna see on cable news or read in the newspapers.

Jordan and Saudi Arabia might, especially if Israel gives them something in return. If not, so they would have to evade detection by those countries, which makes the routes they would have to fly longer.

Another option is to launch from Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has had lots of problems with Iran and has a kind of alliance with Israel going that doesn't get talked about a lot. There's a base in Azerbaijan that Israel helped them build and the Azerbaijanis have said they would let Israel use.

Israel has been working on this problem for years for this exact circumstance. In the early 1980s, some analysts thought it would be impossible for Israel to hit the Iraqi nuclear reactor with the assets they had at the time, but Israel found a way to do it. They're good at improvising around problems like this.

Or they could just not use planes at all and use missiles like Astrocometus suggested. I would be that is the US's preferred option as well. Israel has missiles that have more than enough range to hit Iran.
