$10k per month to run ATS?
That seems pretty steep.

That is what I remember reading in a thread about the sale of the site , it does seem a lot especially if the site has no revenue coming back into the coffers but I know zero about what a website costs to run with a 8 TB database and all that goes with it .

And if the owners used a front organization in the buying process, Bill only knows the midleman then ,who is not the real owner .

I said the same thing.

Then I was given an explanation.

Then I looked really foolish.

What if the end of this site coincided with most things discussed here being true and divulged and no need for the site any longer
. I lurked a long time before I joined. This is going to suck. Iā€™m hoping someone has an ATS 2.0 in the works or whatnot, a big part of me is going to be lost

Look under DTOM SIGNATURE and click on

Fantastic! Much obliged

competed in contest, got sick came back & that was all gone.

Thank you DTOM, Djarms, Argentus, ArMap & everyone I missed for staying & Keeping us going with all of your hard work & many hours you have dedicated here for many years & All Volunteer...Good on You!

I suppose an AI language model fed with different opinions would only be able to present them as possibilities, but I don't know if it would be able to identify one as correct (or more popular).

8 TB database? Where did you get that number from?

Looking at the stats (26,765,939 posts, 1,325,279 threads and 367,151 members) and assuming some record sizes we get, for example:
With an average of 7,600 bytes per post, 1,000 per thread and 1,000 per member
7,600 x 26,765,939 + 1,000 x 1,325,279 + 1,000 x 367,151 = 191 GB

Bill did contact them. I reached out to Bill a couple months ago and updated him on the current state of things. He sent the owner an email but not a peep was heard back. He's not the only one that's tried either. Radio silence.

Well, good to know he tried.

Bad to know that the new owner ghosted him.

Thanks for your efforts as well! šŸ»

WHY? I don't get it. WHY sink so much money into something and then abandon it? It's really weird to me. But perhaps others have a lot of money to burn. Something I wouldn't know about .... extra money to waste.

Think about why and who was pressuring all social media to censor specific political points. Then think about what was actually permanently deleted here on ATS. šŸ˜€

As just a general principle, worrying about sunk cost is a common fallacy that causes bad decisions.

In the specific case of ATS, my understanding was they were practically giving the site away since the value is based profitiability and profitability had dropped off to about nothing. (though the domain name might have some value independent of that). So the big hurdle for any buyer was paying the ($10,000?) hosting costs per month or whatever, though Bill said that's not enough, because the site is based on custom code that is too difficult to maintain. So, according to Bill, the new owners would need to hire a programmer to migrate the site over to some code which is not so custom, and can be maintained more easily, and while it was a little fuzzy, he was talking about $25,000 a month for a while to pay for the migration costs in addition to hosting, though that wouldn't be a forever cost once the migration was complete. Apparently the migration never happened, though at least the site received an https upgrade (secure connections) after ownership transfer.

Some people thought it could be done for less but anyway those are the figures from Bill I seem to recall.

" If the site goes down for good, I will feel the loss of access to that information."

As much as it pains me to say this, it s not "if", but "when".
Oh dear, I better start archiving some threads sooner rather than later in that case, you might be right!

Best of luck with that and with wherever life takes you once this ship has sunk. I have enjoyed your contributions.

All the best
I also wish you the best. Some of us have made accounts at the site in DontTreadOnMe's signature, including me, where I'm registered as "Arby" so we have another ship to flee to once this ship has sunk. I see a lot of familiar names there.

As far as I understand it, very few things were permanently deleted.
Even posts from "deleted" forums are still in the database.

The entire MudPit is deleted. The MudPit contains (contained) 90% of the identical political controversial material that was being asked to censor on SM. ATS made a very big point of eliminating The MudPit last year during the trembling times. šŸ˜ƒ None of the deleted posts are available to Members.

Thanks, that's good to know. The site isn't as large as I thought it might be. I guess you have to be a mod to check that? I don't know how to do that with my access.
