Twenty five years ago, my wife and I stayed at the Westin Maui for a week. This area was paradise but all the other buildings were wooden while the Westin was concrete. Now it is the only building standing in the area.

60 mph winds and fire in this area would be like a blowtorch. The intense burning also pulled in air from all directions making it a howling inferno, like all of the residents alive describe.

I would like to say God be with all of them, but God had nothing to do with this.

These proud people will eventually bring it back to it's former paradise, hopefully with better plans for escaping fires such as this.

As of Aug. 27, fires continue to burn in Anapuni, Olinda, Kula and Lahaina on Maui.

Once again, a Maui community was upended by fire activity on the Hawaiian island when a brush fire prompted new evacuations over the weekend, as the search for remains continues more than two weeks after the deadly brush fires in Lahaina.

Yahoo news

Since the fires, FEMA has received 11,010 applications for assistance. So far, the agency has distributed more than $14.6 million in emergency housing and individual aid.

Not sure if that $14.6 million includes the $1000/night in 3 different 5 star hotels on the other side of the island for FEMA employees.

ever tried burning live wood? You can't as it's filled with water.

There's your answer.

ps, Also. The bark on a tree is there to protect the tree.

If the water table goes below the tap root it dries out.

I don't think you understand how it works here. Only tourists pay $1000 a night. Nearly all the luxury hotels have rates for locals that are typically about half off the high rates, sometimes less this time of year. Plus the state government negotiated the rooms so I bet they got the 1000 rooms they booked for $100-$300 a night max.

I used to stay at one of the resorts that is usually about $750 a night and never paid more than $225. How did I do that? I simply called the resort, said I was local and could commit to 20 nights in the year, what rate could they give me? Another resort that charges $350+ per night gave me $89 for committing to 50 nights in a year. Trust me, the state and feds are not paying anything close to what you think!

And by the way, the 5-star resorts are just a few miles (~5) from Lahaina, not "on the other side of the island." Fact check much?

Nothing so altruistic as environmental concerns. The billionaires on Maui want the island paradise to themselves and money = influence = you can buy anything

I keep hearing high winds and while it was windy near the fire pictures from out in the ocean just a mile offshore show winds of less than 7mph due to lack of waves as measured on the Beaufort scale. The hurricane was 500 miles away and had no effect on the local weather as it was a bright, sunny day with light winds. These winds were driven by superheated air beyond the ability of normal fires, some estimates made by melted materials found are above 3,000 degrees. These are not anomalies for fires made by directed energy weapons but show the same hallmarks as we've seen on 9/11, santa rosa and Paradise Ca fires.

Oh so you were there that day and know for a fact that there were no winds to cause any issues? Good to know.

Where did I claim to be there? I also said it was windy near the fires but please don't put words in my mouth I didn't say.

I hope the wind doesn't blow down the great big black fence that's being built round Lahaina.

The media is tying it to Climate Change. Warmer water made close-passing Hurricane stronger than usual, causing a broader/stronger wind field.

BTW...CNN-MSNBC-ABC-CBS-NBC-NYTimes-WaPo are all thankful for the Maui firestorms, injuries, and deaths. They have been able to avoid talking about most of the horrible days Joe Biden is having this week.

I don't think you and I are ever going to agree on much but I will give credit where it is due. I'm having a hard time with everyone blaming a hurricane that was 500 miles or more to the south! I believe in human caused climate change but on the fire day it was very calm where I live on the Big Island less than 100 miles away, and much closer to the hurricane. There was a perfect storm of a high pressure region north of Hawaii and the low pressure region from the hurricane that produced high winds at certain locations on Maui and on the summits of the Big Island.

It was unusually dry over Hawaii for a few days, likely because the hurricane drew moisture toward it. Warmer water does strengthen hurricanes. That's science and we are seeing it in real time right now in Florida as the hurricane strengthened rapidly when it hit the record warm water just as scientists predicted.

I think humans are causing catastrophic climate change because we are creating too much CO2. But I don't really care. I'm in my late 50s and have no kids so it won't really impact me. It goes in the don't care bucket. But I am amused by the people with kids or grandkids who are going to have to live with the mess we are leaving them who continue to deny and bury their heads in the sand. Like I said, I don't care, I just find it kind of sick that you are ok with leaving such a mess for you kids so that, what? You can continue to support billionaires who pollute and support political candidates who have duped you? Is that what it is about?

Anyway, spot on about questioning the role of the hurricane on the Maui fires!

No you didn't claim you were there, but you claimed "it was a bright, sunny day with light winds". And yet videos from before the fire started, or just afterwards, before it was a significant fire, clearly show extremely strong winds. So either the fire instantly superheated the air and created strong winds all around the area, or there were strong winds in the area already.

The hurricane wasn't the only thing in the area affecting the weather. There was also a high pressure system to the north of the islands that was interacting with the extreme edges of the hurricane (which can throw winds hundreds of miles).

We also have the trade winds, which are light winds blowing in a mostly continuous uniform wind across the oceans at this latitude. They are only a few mph but can get accelerated as they blow around the mountains and through the valleys. There are areas notorious for being windy all the time. I don't know if Lahaina is one of those areas.

And the word Lahaina has a meaning that might be relevant here. La can mean 3 related things in the Hawaiian language, day, sun, or the sun god. Haina means cruel or unmerciful. So Lahaina is usually translated as "cruel sun," adjectives follow nouns in Hawaiian just like Spanish or French.

This was no directed energy weapon or anything else like that. It was power lines getting blown down by high winds!

I lived on Oahu for many years, and flew into Maui a lot for work. Every time we did it was windy as could be, because of the valley that the airport is in. I always loved Maui, but it was rarely not windy when I was there.

They mapped the area with LIDAR, then superimposed county tax maps that shows all ownerships of properties, and then last week used a DEW to selectively burn this area avoiding VIP's. It has to be a lawless element of the CIA/NSA military to be brazen enough to do such a diabolical thing. The weapon uses Blue/UV as a carrier wave for other wavelengths beyond light. It's why blue things may not have been affected. Orange and browns, reds would be the most affected. The winds and weather was a bonus. Plus they expect government lovers to ridicule anything like what has happened.

That's my theory/hypothesis
