They thought they did. A kid from England caught it and he was in an elephant cave where there were bats etc. After an extensive research in the cave they came up with nothing, and there was nothing in the kids further trip to look into. Really weird.

I don't know the story but either it must have come directly from a bat or the intermediate animals such as chimpanzees or some apes or even from another animal. That's the natural way.

Unless you entertain the idea it came from a lab somehow, but still must be presented on an animal.

Nope, not from a lab, but just shows us it is not easy to figure out a lot of this. Have you ever read the book The Hot Zone from the 80s? Great read...

I know what the book is about but haven't read it.
Sometimes could be difficult to establish how the outbreak has started. There seems to be another one ay this moment in Uganda with 'unknown' origins but all outbreaks start when humans come in contact with animals or animal fluids.
