They are occupying the oil fields. At the Kurdish areas. There are videos of this with US soldiers while waving the US flags.

US retains military presence in northeast Syria

I agree with the statement, they are holding. That's all the can do until they are strong enough to go on the offensive and retake land outside of western Ukraine.

Here are a couple of things.

First, Ukraine has won the information war so far. The world is basically united with them, and against russia.

As a result of this, Ukraine is getting money and weapons

Second, with those weapons they should start to be able to beat the Russians back.

Until Russia fully commits, which it hasn't done so far. Russia has sent some specialists in, but most the fighting body is conscripts. It's expected that there will be heavy casualites, this is by design, to soften Ukraine.

Russian Military is geared for massive warfare, not Guerrilla tactics, that said, the Chechen unites are build for that, they are one of the specialist group fighting. Once Ukraine gets their good stuff, Russia can counter and fully mobilize, this becomes the war that Russia can win, but at a higher cost. keep in mind, there are Russians in Belarus ready to move south.

My belief is that once the heavy stuff flows to Ukraine, and Ukraine starts using it, Russia will fully mobilze, Putin will have his excuse, then push wast, push north and west further out of Crimea, and push south again out of Belarus.

If Ukraine can beat that back, Russia will consolidate their gains and force peace. If the Ukrainians can't hold it back, Russia will make more gains in the South and East, then sue for peace, giving them the Black Sea, and the East they want.

If Ukraine can beat Russia back in the west, they can ask for UN peace keepers, and establish protection in the west. My guess is that it wont be NATO doing it, but the African Coalition, or South American coalition backed up by Patriot missile batteries and allot of Anti-Aircraft, this will move the war east for Ukraine and they can divert their force to counter Russia.

At that point you have a war of wills, eventually someone will cave, where the line is where the border will be.To early to tell though,

If the EU passes more sanctions, you may see Russia just cut them off completely for Gas, etc. This will make it difficult during the summer, but i have faith that europe leadership will REALLY screw this up, and come winter it will be miserable.
