I'm torn between 2 different positions on this catholicism debate:

a) On the one hand, I keep being drawn to the bible verse "Where ever two or more gather in my name...", which makes me wonder whether it is predestined that the church be rebuilt from scratch - after returning to the same small gatherings the apostles must have held after the ascension of Christ,

b) On the other hand, I'm drawn to how the catholic church was central to my life for 40 years; from altar boy, to one of the best educations available in the UK, to my kids' catholic schools, my service on the parish committee, PTA Chairman and then School Governor.

Point (b) leads me to the same position as you (I think?) that, at the ground floor, the catholic church instilled morals and standards that appeared to be lacking in most of those who rejected organised christianity - and I dread a society totally devoid of those morals and standards.

I think the question needs to be "How to solidify good standards in society without using large religious organisations?" before we can feel safe to totally remove them?
