Another PM that seems to have faired rather well in times of war.

Horrible hateful woman all the same and outside of Tory circles probably Britain's most hated politician to date.

She stole our weans milk and was responsible for the death of Britain’s heavy manufacturing industries.

Never mind the fact also that her policies led to mass unemployment nationwide.

She also precipitated the social housing crisis still being felt today.

But like you suggest she was not up for taking guff from the likes of Argentina or anyone else.

Just so people know and understand. Information from war zones can become confusing as there will no doubt be info released from the players (on both sides) involved that might not necessarily be true.

As such take everything as a possibility and NOT as absolute truth.

Rzeszow, the Polish base from which military aid to Ukraine comes and whose airport is full of planes

Weeks before the Russian attack on Ukraine, several governments of NATO member countries, such as the British, the Estonian or the Polish, sent weapons to Ukraine. So it was a simple operation. The British press had details of how military cargo planes they flew from a base south of London to Kiev, unloaded and returned.

As of February 24, it was impossible to ship directly to Ukraine by plane, so that material began to land in Poland.

The operation gained scope when the European Union approved a few days after the attack use 450 million euros of Community funds to buy and ship these weapons to Ukraine. From then on practically every European government loaded planes and flew to Poland.

It is one of the largest operations ever organized to arm a country already in the midst of a war. And it can be followed live in computer applications such as FlightRadar24 if the flight number is known.

Those b52 flights always bother me too, I think they should have been scattered and grounded when the invasion began.

It's an extremely reckless bluff to the already paranoid putin madman who KNOWS we have other aircraft with the same capabilities that he can't see.

Its the second one I found today. According to the flight info they are based out of the UK. I know the USAF scaled back the flights over the Baltic when a B-52 and its fighter escorts made a straight line towards Kaliningrad in such a manner Russia kind of went bonkers over the action. No airspace / other violations occurred but I can understand the Russian reaction to it (even though the types of flights in question are somewhat routine).

While it pissed the Russians off, on the flip side, there is nothing Russia can do about it - it is international airspace after all and Russia doesnt get to dictate where planes of foreign militaries go (just like their bomber flights near Alaska and the West coast of the US). If I am not mistaken I believe Russia has military aircraft based out of Venezuela.

Thought that was Nicoliar Sturgeon. Royally destroying Scotlands industry, education, health and society from within, and blaming everyone else as well as keeping the myth of Thatcher alive! It was previous governments who closed most coal mines and heavy industry died long before Thatcher came along.

Anyway, we digress! This thread's abot Ukraine, is it not?

I agree completely, but don't think it's wise to be poking the paranoid bear with subtle nuke threats right now, even if those flights are perfectly proper and completely common.

We have a senile old idiot facing off with a raging paranoid schizophrenic, what could possibly go wrong?

Best to fake our 'calm' voice until the madman is coaxed back into his padded room and the idiot back into his basement.

One might get even crazier at the sight of billy clubs and tasers, and the other doesn't appear to remember that the point is to NOT turn russia's Ukrainian invasion into ww3.

Patton was dead and wasn't around to see the beginnings of the Cold War.

Actually he called the Cold War before it started. He was of the mindset that they need to engage russia while we had our forces in Europe. Churchill was also of that mindset - hence operation unthinkable. We should have listened to Patton. If we did we might not be having the issues in Ukraine.

I don't like Nicolarse Sturgeon myself paraphi.

Like i suggest all the same Margret Thatcher outside of your own Tory circles is probably the most hated PM and politician to date for a multitude of different reasonings none of which I'm sure we will agree upon.

You correct through the thread is indeed about Ukraine and not British politics or politicians.

I said as much when i brought up Churchill and the V sign.

So back on topic.

Freedom for Ukraine and down with Russia's diabolical invasion.

Patton was already making noise about it in the final weeks of the war, especially after he learned of the decision to let russia take berlin, but no, he perished in a slow speed 'traffic' accident before the war actually ended, or in the days after (I don't recall which and too lazy to look it up).

Was there not some talk of foul play being involved regarding Patton's demise in that traffic accident?

Lots of conspiracy theories on that one at the time.

I don't know if any have merit, but the official story makes less sense than the original jfk, russia hoax, jussie hoax, or bat soup stories did.

Theories included everything from russian sniper, russian poisoning, accidental self shooting or by a U.S. Private, died with a prostitute coverup, etc.

Some even thought Eisenhower had him killed to shut him up about russia.

My best guess is that an old man with a lifetime of bad eating and sleeping habits had a heart attack or stroke during war time and someone panicked with the fake accident nonsense for 'morale'.

That wouldn't have been the Cold War, that would have been a very hot war.

Well they ""lost"" the accident report did the not?

Im not sure as to the veracity of talk regarding foul play nether.

Then again generals with disagreements have been know to remove there counterparts from the equation now and again.

Stranger things have happened, especially during wartimes.

First of all I'd like to thank you for all the effort and detail you put into your posts and in keeping this thread as up to date as possible.
Its greatly appreciated.

Margaret Thatcher?
Now there's a conundrum.
When it comes to her domestic policies I'm very much in the anti-Thatcher camp, but that's a discussion for another time and place.

Prior to The Falklands War Thatcher had just announced the biggest round of Defence cuts this country had ever seen.....and has never been matched since despite the constant reductions in the UK's defence budget.
In addition privately Thatcher had intimated that she was prepared to discuss sovereignty of The Falklands with Argentina.

The military dictator of Argentina at the time General Galtieri was facing big problems at home and his regime was in trouble - strangely enough so was Thatcher but we'll come to that.

Given the signals coming from the UK Galtieri supposed that an Argentinian invasion of The Falklands would be met with at worst diplomatic anger and that some sort of deal would be thrashed at - at worst he envisaged a Joint Sovereignty agreement.
This would have made him a hero at home and distracted attention away from the many other issues he faced.

Thatcher was a hugely unpopular Prime Minister at the time and it was generally accepted that she would have been soundly beaten at the upcoming General Election.
The British public were enraged at the Argentinian invasion of UK territory and demanded action.
Cynics say Thatcher saw the political advantages of doing a U-turn - ironic given 'the lady's not for turning' phrase associated with Thatcher - others say she was merely reflecting public wishes.
But Thatcher demanded the end to the invasion and the rest as they say is history.

The thing is, once committed Thatcher committed 100%, no weak indecisive leadership. She was strong and resilient, exactly what the British people both need and want in times of adversity and conflict.
Thatcher would not be bullied or intimidated and was remarkably steadfast.

But without The Falklands War history would probably have remembered Thatcher as a rather poor one term Prime Minister.

However, I'm not too sure those traits would work with an ego driven megalomaniac like Putin.
