Technically that would not be illegal in Florida. There is a Romeo & Juliet law that allows for people over the age of 18 to have a sexual relationship with a minor as long as the age difference is not more than four years, the relationship is consensual, and the older party does not have any prior sex offenses.

I don't know about you but I tend to think there's a major difference between visiting family in Florida and paying a 17 year old girl from Florida to have sex with you.

The girl is a US citizen. He allegedly paid her for sex and then brought her along with him on a trip to the Bahamas. That, along with also taking her across state lines, is what takes this from just a simple "Unlawful sexual activity with certain minors" case for the Florida courts to a Federal case of sex trafficking of a minor.

Interestingly enough, Gaetz is also under investigation for corruption because of that Bahamanian getaway.

To be fair, the ex-girlfriend is not the minor that Gaetz had sex with. The ex-girlfriend helped Gaetz intimidate the victim so she wouldn't tell anyone her story.

She was looking for immunity from being charged with witness tampering before she would testify.
