Matt Gaetz's ex-girlfriend testifies to grand jury in sex trafficking probe

ORLANDO, Fla. — Rep. Matt Gaetz’s ex-girlfriend testified Wednesday before a federal grand jury investigating him for sex crimes, a major development that suggests the Department of Justice may be moving closer to indicting him.

The ex-girlfriend, whose name is being withheld by NBC News to respect her privacy, has been in talks for months with prosecutors about an immunity deal. Under a possible deal, she would avoid prosecution for obstruction of justice in return for testifying in the investigation into whether Gaetz in 2017 had sex with a 17-year-old female for money and whether months later he and others violated a federal law prohibiting people for paying for prostitutes overseas.

It looks like the net may be finally closing on Gaetz.

After no indictment came last year many assumed he was in the clear. However, after prosecutors requested in October that his sentencing be delayed again due to his continued cooperation with investigators I had a feeling this wasn't over.

We now know that Gaetz is the target of a grand jury. Based on the way grand juries work, there's a good chance Gaetz will be indicted. Then we'll start to see how deep this rabbit hole goes. Based on comments from Greenberg's lawyer, what Gaetz and Greenberg were a part of was pretty widespread in Florida's political scene.

I will say that if prosecutors are moving to indict Gaetz they must have a pretty strong case. One doesn't exactly go after a sitting US Representative on a whim.

It will also be interesting to see if McCarthy does anything about Gaetz' committee assignments at this point or if he waits until an actual indictment is handed down.

If he is guilty, let him pay.

But on first glance it reads like your typical (these days) Anti FL Anti Repub. crapshoot.

The Fed really wants to take down independent states like SD, FL, TX, and the like.

If he’s guilty then lock him up. But it might just be a setup to throw dirt on his name for the short term. I don’t believe anything the media reports.

I mean, the investigation's been going in for almost two years and they have a number of witnesses willing to say that he had sex with an underage girl.

They also are able to place him out of the country with the girl.

So just based on the evidence known to the public it definitely seems like he did it.

Gaetz' buddy Greenberg, who was convicted of sex trafficking of a minor among a multitude of other things, is the one who had his sentencing delayed due to cooperating with investigators.

Age of consent in Florida is 18. If it can be proven he had sex with the girl Gaetz is looking at up to 15 years in prison just from that. If he is found guilty of sex trafficking of a minor he's looking at even more.
