The UK and Europe are experiencing a natural gas shortage that is sure to spill over into the rest of the world as the Covid recovery has has overrun supply capacity and reserves are running short.

This is interesting as Europe depends on Russia who supplies 35% Europe's gas. However, Russia is intent on refilling its reserves first for winter, which is putting a pinch on supplies elsewhere, contributing to a 500% increase in wholesale prices.

The consumer hasn't seen this yet as regulations limit price increases....until April that is. In the mean time gas companies are crashing every day in the UK with more to come. ....9 so far this year.
metro.co.uk...

Consumers will be switching companies to one of the bigger ones(I did) so this could spiral fast for other companies.

So what happened? Water levels have gotten low in several counties making hydro electric dams near operable. Calm weather has meant wind farms have not been producing.

Coal mines have been shuttered so no backup there, and Europe's nuclear power plants are getting old. Its like a perfect storm hitting.

Even shale producers in the US are loathe to amp up production for fear of collapsing the price and scaring off investors.

There may be a lot of cold peeps this winter.

And that's where the problem lies , Putin is using our reliance on Russian gas for his own ends , the opening of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will just make the problem worse as he will have us just where he want's us , compliant and silent for fear of restricted supplies.

Add to that Lebanon as a warning to poorer countries. Don't pay your bills, we cut off supplies.

Scary Times ahead in the Northern Hemisphere, while Extreme Heat and Bushfires are in store for us in the South.

First thing biden did when he took office is shut down a pipeline. Maybe he is driving up our dependence on foreign oil too.

Who didn't see that coming. Thank Murkle.

I think the global shutdown is the biggest problem. Nobody was ready for the surge of demand once the factories opened up....but how dumb was that no to think about that?

Even China may scale down its factories, which of course means no rubber dog poop for christmas.

I have tons of blankets, a fireplace, and portable radiant quartz heaters, not to mention a generator if I wanted to wire it up. Apartment dwellers may not be so fortunate however.

Keystone. He pulled the permit.

ETA: Remember that time when gas prices jumped by a dollar or more when biden took office and they are still up there? Thats in part why.

There are many reports about people who run their generators inside their houses during a Blackout, it's so sad.

Oh i saw in texas people were putting charcoal grills in their house and dying of CO. I live in midwest. We see all weather and are prepared for it. There are generators you can run indoors but not really in small places. Dual fuel generators take kerosene and many kerosene heaters can be run indoors but usually this is for construction purposes.

Where else is the uk supposed to get its gas from, I will tell you where.

The US has been in the way of nordic stream every step of the way.

Why? Because it wants to ship its gas to Europe at ridiculously high prices.

So the choice is buy gas from russia at reasonable prices ot be held hostage by the the US for prices way higher than russia can supply it.

You are correct. I forget that natural gas is pulled directly from the ground, not split in oil fractionation towers.

Given a choice between buying from Russia or the US I would choose the US every time , giving Russia more leverage over us is not a smart move.

The UK is moving more toward renewable energy so gas is becoming a thing of the past.

Renewables generated 43 per cent of the UK’s electricity, while fossil fuels provided 38.5 per cent. Offshore and onshore wind accounted for 24.2 per cent in the renewables share: offshore wind 13 per cent and onshore wind 11.2 per cent. Low carbon sources, including renewables and nuclear power, together generated 59 per cent of the UK’s electricity in 2020, according to the figures in the latest Energy Trends report published by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
