How do you “seal” a surgical mask. It doesn’t have a sealing / gasket like surface as seen in a half face respiratory.

You do not "seal" a surgical mask, obviously, but what's the connection between "sealing" a surgical mask and what I was saying?

The N-95 masks have a more rigid surface to make a better “seal” than a surgical mask.

That's one of the reasons I don't like them, they make it harder to breath than surgical masks. That's also why they weren't considered as a good choice for a general use mask in Portugal.

Evidently you don’t walk fast enough to sweat, or move around doing actual labor.

Why do you say that? What difference does sweating? And yes, I do move around, but my mask doesn't get out of place.

Too bad the vaccines were never tested on the old, weak, or people with preexisting conditions.

It depends, some were tested on older people, some were tested on people with some pre-existing conditions, some with others.

Nobody can be sure of the long term side effects either.

Or even medium term side effects, that was one of the reasons why I declined the offer when I was contacted some months ago.

They have actually been testing and working with mRNA for two decades now, so what can they do to satisfy you?

In my case, I just liked to see longer term results, the CoViD-19 vaccines are only one year old.

I understand but you just are not going to get it ever... Well now you are, so hold out for a few years and see how billions handle it. Its a choice, but I think in the end it will be safer than traditional methods.

Here is some current news about what you discuss.

www.lewrockwell.com...

It seems Pfizer did a wee bit o' cheating in bringing their products to market. No surprise, as Pfizer plead guilty in 2009 to fraudulent marketing.

A key quote is buried on page 42: “Among 3410 total cases of suspected but unconfirmed COVID-19 in the overall study population, 1594 occurred in the vaccine group vs. 1816 in the placebo group [who received a saltwater shot].”

Well I don't think it prevents... It reduces the affects by triggering your body to make T-cells for it which is the biggie. The problem with COVID is one person gets hardly any symptoms while another is in the hospital for 3 weeks... It has some every extreme outcomes and that is why it has a higher mortality rate than something like the common flu.

Sweating makes a big difference!

You must not work out in them then.

As soon as I get that sweat-heavy mask sucking up against my face, it triggers my brain. I have both asthma and claustrophobia, and my brain thinks I'm having issues with that and smothering. So I start to fight it and end up hyperventilating. It's miserable, and I never adapted to it.

Needless to say, as soon as the mandates dropped, I dropped the mask, and suddenly ... I could breathe again.

I think we've all seen that play out right in front of us - we have many people - especially in the media - who simply don't care to understand the data - they don't have to, they have some authority figure to tell them what it means.

They then get to scream at those who disagree with the data, and feel righteous and outraged. They've been doing that for over a year now - they like to think it's a "consensus" - but really, it's more of a herd mentality. One lemming jumps off the cliff, the rest follow - "he must know what he's doing."

Meanwhile, the skeptics actually have to examine / interpret the data in order to make a judgment and a counter-argument.

(Of course, not every skeptic does this - many do the same as the "pro-maskers" (for lack of a better term) - they, too, find some authority figure they can believe, some of them, honestly, are deeply weird and wrong).

But my experience is the ones who are most vociferous in their beliefs, and who seem to be the ones with hugely incorrect data and risk assessments, are the ones who are "pro-mask" (again, that phrase.)

I think the underlying factor is kind of obvious - the dogmatic "pro-maskers" are the most frightened and most likely to over-estimate their risk.

Did anyone here bother to download and read the actual article? If not, please do. The researchers were not trying to compare scientific reasoning between anti-maskers and people who wear masks. They were trying to figure out how to better get through to anti-maskers. The sentence "For these
anti-mask users, their approach to the pandemic is grounded in a
more scientific rigor, not less." is referring to the researchers' findings that "in these anti-maskers' minds" they think that their views are supported by science.

Dude, everyone thinks that.

Everyone thinks their views are supported by science, and that's the problem. Most everyone finds science that supports their views because the science is all over the place.

Heck, *one* scientist - Dr. Fauci - the expert in charge for the government, has been all over the map with his science. So which stance of his do you like? He's taken them all at one time or another.

To sum it up then, this basically affirms that anti-maskers are more Vulcan in this regard and want to examine as much as possible before making a final determination, whereas pro-maskers will insta-hop on the bandwagon willy-nilly almost.

Did I get that right? I skimmed the PDF, but really don't have the time to thoroughly read it right now. That's just what the overall point to the study felt like to me.

Well , thats Because...............

Neither with or without them, I don't work out.

In situations like that, in Portugal, mask use is not mandatory.

Needless to say, as soon as the mandates dropped, I dropped the mask, and suddenly ... I could breathe again.

I also have asthma and I don't have any problems with breathing while using a mask. What type of mask did you use?

My experience is the opposite, the most vociferous I have seen are those that are against the masks.

I think the underlying factor is kind of obvious - the dogmatic "pro-maskers" are the most frightened and most likely to over-estimate their risk.

On the opposite side, most of the ones that are against the masks assume all the mask wearers do it because they are either frightened or just blindly following what others say, as they do not admit the possibility of being wrong.

You

You do not "seal" a surgical mask, obviously, but what's the connection between "sealing" a surgical mask and what I was saying?

When you work in industry, a half face respiratory actually seals against your face. It makes it harder to breath because it actually seals forcing air flow through the filter cartridges, you have to pass a physical to show you are physically fit to wear a respirator. You also go through a fit test to find the correct size that fits, and seals against your face.

When you don a half face respiratory, you actually test to ensure it is properly sealed against your face.

What’s the check to see if a cloth / surgical mask is sealed?

That's one of the reasons I don't like them, they make it harder to breath than surgical masks.

LOL
That’s because the N-95 is actually filtering the air, and protecting you. Unlike a surgical/ cloth mask were air and contaminates are bypassing where the mask fails to seal against your face. Its also like the N-95 masks and half face respirators that have an exit valve. They don’t protect the people around you from what you are exhaling because it goes through the exit valve unfiltered.

You

Why do you say that? What difference does sweating?

If a mask is moist/wet from sweat, snot, and / or slobber, then the air that is forced through the wet media will carry droplets. When you breath out, there is a possibility your spraying your body fluids around. What’s the whole point of wearing a cloth /surgical mask?

Translation.

Mask wearers think scientist are smarter than they are and follow instructions.

Non mask wearers think that they are smarter than scientists and do what they personally conclude is best.

The trouble is that a lot of the data that the non mask wearers are basing their decisions on is innacurate or outright false. Such as looking at risk factors over a population rather than over a demographic. Or anything that comes out of Alex Jones mouth.

People like to think that they are critical thinker, but they often do not think critically when it comes to data that supports their opinions.

Just look at what mask wearing did to the flu last winter. If you can kick flu season the kurb like that you will do something similar to Covid.

Makes a difference under what conditions. Face to face casual communication for a minute or two? Or loading lumber at a crowded lumber store? Stocking shelves for a whole shift at a crowded grocery store? Or wearing the same mask for eight to nines hours in a crowded office space? Or like my kid, coming home from school with food stains on her mask from lunch?

With no proper disposal chain to safely get rid of potentially contaminated masks. If your ever behind a garbage truck in the rain, think of what’s inside the garage truck next time it’s misting sludge all over your vehicle.

Real hygienic....

In a lab wishful thinking of ideal conditions and ability to properly wear a mask vs real world and situational reality. Sort of the old cry not to teach obstinance from sex to stop the spread of sexual transmitted diseases and prevent pregnancy. So? Why would anyone think people have the discipline to correctly wear ineffective masks compared to N-95s that are literally only 95 percent efficient them selves, and properly dispose of them?

I do agree the tight N-95 masks are effective. So. Why wasn’t there been a push by the government to ensure a supply of N-95’s if policy makes thinks masks worn by the general population makes a difference? I guess N-95 masks can have a filter efficiency up to 98 percent.

Food for though... in a lab...

In a laboratory atmosphere, with all tests performed on a single individual for consistency, Clapp et al2 found variable fitted filtration efficiencies against the test aerosol among the face masks that ranged from approximately 25% to 80%. Comparatively, a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health–approved N95 respirator had a filtration efficiency of approximately 98%. Notably, the filtration efficiency of some of the consumer-grade masks, such as a washed 2-layer nylon mask with ear loops and an aluminum nose bridge (79.0%), exceeded that of a medical-grade procedure mask with ear loops (38.5%), and a surgical mask with ties (71.5%).
