Genetic information is the newest front in US-China great power competition

A new front is opening in the intensifying economic and diplomatic competition between the United States and China: human DNA.

“I think we're just seeing the leading edge of it,” retired Lt. Gen. Thomas Spoehr, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Center for National Defense, told the Washington Examiner. "Everybody knows that we ought not to be sharing technical data on hypersonics, directed energy, things like that. This is one of those things that people haven't thought of.”

And last year, a Chinese doctor aided the birth of “the world’s first known gene-edited babies," an operation that drew international condemnation because he had modified the DNA in their embryos “to try making them resistant to their father’s HIV infection,” as the Wall Street Journal explained.

It’s theoretically possible to combine those concepts “to make people super-soldiers,” according to Spoehr, a former commandant at the Army’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School. If researchers can identify parts of DNA that make some people better athletes than others, for example, and it's possible — though widely condemned as unethical — to edit DNA to encourage or suppress certain qualities, governments around the world might consider "engineering biological weapons" and soldiers to resist their effects.

China wants to make the country’s Uighurs, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group, more subservient to the Communist Party. The danger of COVID-19 tests being used as a method for gathering genomic data on the unsuspecting public is part of a larger conversation about the dangers posed by genealogy companies generally. Millions of people around the world have voluntarily submitted their DNA in exchange for information about their ancestry. The vast majority of the users of these companies, such as Ancestry and 23andMe, do not read the Terms of Service which outline how the genealogy firms can use the data.

One of the ways this data is used is to sell it to biotech companies who are interested in developing new drugs and therapies. Clearly, there are governments and militaries who also have an interest in collecting this data.

I've been worried for a long time now about all our historical properties and museum pieces, as well as our historic documents and books.

I've said before the Constitution and the DOI should be removed to a highly secure location until this insanity passes, however long that may be. We need a small cadre of highly trusted individuals to protect them.

The left would destroy it all in a heartbeat. I can see them burning down every Smithsonian building, historic building and historic residence we have. I see them burning our history books with undisguised glee.

They are hateful and reckless.

Would you believe I saw Oprah Winfrey on TV in the break room today, talking about how Biden is simply not behaving like a president should? It really is becoming obvious to everybody with an ounce of sense that Biden should be in a nursing home, not the White House.

It's overlooked (intentionally), but the New York Times ran an article 3 weeks ago, essentially saying Joe Biden is not mentally well enough to be U.S. President. It was a STUNNER. So much so, even conservative media barely covered it.

Not only does Biden seem to have no real support, but neither does Kamala Harris. Perhaps it's not so strange: She literally slept her way into office, plus she's a former prosecutor, which for your typical leftist these days places her about on part with a cockroach.
