The original claim :

Dr's have been wearing masks for decades I'm surprised there hasn't been a fungal pandemic yet?

kinda left a lot of things open for interpretation, IMHO.

Was playing on the "Dr's have been wearing masks for decades" part, as if it could have meant all Doctors, were always wearing them, day and night, 24 hours a day, for decades.

That is but one, of multiple possible interpretations, some more silly than others.

While it's fun for me to point out the potential for ridiculous interpretations, it is also a call to other posters to make their comments clear, if they don't want them to be misinterpreted.

Do you want to continue to support a comment that 'probably meant this', and 'should have said that' ?

From my experience : many surgeons spend a considerable amount of their work time, doing other tasks than actual surgery. Patient meetings, training, admin, etc...

The last Urologist we saw had one surgery day, every second Friday.

Yes, they could have been clearer. It happens when we rush.

I have no problem supporting what I believe to be the core of the comment, people have been wearing masks for prolonged periods without any fungal pandemic reported from that type of activity despite it having been the norm for decades.

Fine.
IMHO : what you are supporting is actually your interpretation, and not the potentially vague original claim.

It's hard to tell the difference sometimes.

How could a 'fungal pandemic' ensue, from less than 1% of Doctors wearing masks ?

What you should be looking for is a few cases, as a 'pandemic' is not possible, understand ?

It's a numbers game, no ?

If you get a huge amount of people, suddenly doing a new activity, or practicing a new action : problems will turn-up that might not have been noticed previously, with a relatively small sample size.

Personally had a problem before from not cleaning my respirator enough. Don't know if it would be termed a rash, or a fungal infection. But just started cleaning better, and it went-away. It was never reported to any medical system.

My woman had a rash from these blue surgical masks for a couple of months. We tried a few creams, until we found one that cleared it up. It was never reported to any medical system. Won't appear in any stats, anywhere.

Well, I did say it was what "I believe" to be the core of the comment.

The post that started all this said:

...mask now will start a new pandemic of fungal and bacterial infections in the lungs...

Pandemic was their word. Pandemics from doctors and others wearing masks for prolonged times haven't happened in the decades that people have been wearing masks to do different types of jobs. Not much more left to say.

Exactly !
You made my point !

There couldn't have been a 'pandemic', as per the definition of pandemic.
The sample size was too small, for it to be 'a thing'.

Unless of course, the WHO changes the definition of pandemic again...

When was the definition changed?
What was it previously? What was it changed to?

Not really.

marg6043 said masks were going to create a pandemic.

kykweer said drs have been wearing masks for decades.

You said they only wore them for minutes.

I posted a study which showed those that do wear them for surgeries usually have them on for hours. Then we went back and forth about what kykweer meant.

Your original point wasn't about sample size. Let's not BS each other. You focused on the use of "Drs" and I focused on your use of "minutes". Both terms missed the mark.

The fact is that, for whatever reason, people have been using masks for prolonged periods of time, before and during this covid thing, and marg6043's claim that it would create a pandemic has, so far, been wrong.

It's been seen multiple times around here, but of course it might not show-up on a Giggle search.

Didn't want to go searching, but did find this article. Don't know the rep of the site, but it sounds sciency :

Principia Scientific International : A Pandemic? What Pandemic ?

The paper seems well-referenced, with an extensive list of links to supposedly back them up.

Am not vouching for the site though, just offering the links in the article.

Definitive proof: Australia and New Zealand.

Yup, tell me about it.

Great Britain, as a small island, had the PERFECT opportunity to follow their example. Hindsight is wonderful, of course, but if we had followed the New Zealand trajectory, for example, we could have been free from infections by June of last year.

Indeed, hindsight and GB's abject failure, has made me feel all Phage-y on the inside...

Of course. But, the average person hasn't the ability to defensively apply the approach.

Sadly, the mask thing has been misunderstood completely.

I'll leave my point at: Surgical Teams. Why do you think the entire team is masked(and gloves)?

Maybe if the tech didn't believe in wearing...any of them...because "I aint wearin no mask"....folks would understand WHY that tech wouldn't be allowed in surgery.

Plz. Plz. All. Just think about barriers. Please.

Thanks all, EMT/Vaccinated x 2

Selfishness is something you cannot abide, but foolishness is?

Have you held such positions regarding flu season for all these years? Have you worn masks for flu season all these years, or were you just enlightened by Anthony Fauci?

Do you realize that the morbidity of C19 is just about exactly the same as for flu? Or does that matter to you?

Not sure where you see foolishness, except perhaps for the non-point-making post you wrote. When the novel virus Spanish Flu hit (yes Flu!) it apparently wiped out 18 million world-wide. Sars-CoV-2 is not flu, it causes Covid-19 symptoms, and it is a rapid mutating novel Corona virus for which our species does not have herd immunity. It kills those susceptible to it, not just old people, but some very fit young people, too. Clearly, genetics plays a part in susceptibility, and no one knows if they are susceptible to just one of the many variants going around until they become infected.

There's nothing foolish about wearing a mask in crowded areas. If you think there is, it says more about you than the mask wearer.

You will have better luck debating this with a brick wall, people are too far gone.

Update

My friend is freaking out. She is calling everyone she can remember being close to, going back about a week. She is terrified she may have given the virus to someone. So far, no one she remembers being around, has gotten sick, yet.

She says she feels better today, but last night was really bad, as she had a lot of trouble breathing, She sounds terrible, and could not talk long because she became short of breath easily.

I didn't ask her if she still thought the virus was a hoax. I didn't see how that would have helped, and it would seem like I was kicking her while she is down, even though I would not have meant it to be snarky. I know some that have gotten the virus and still don't believe it is real.

To each his own beliefs, and his own choices, though I would recommend erring on the side of caution.

I know a girl who was put into the ICU today, around noon, she would be about 50. On O2 but not a ventilator. Started feeling off a few days ago, turned sideways pretty quick.

Take responsibility people, for yourself and for your community.

My friend, consider this.

We will never get 100% of the people to comply, there will always be some who choose otherwise.

As such, I'm afraid that in your way of thinking, we will *never* be rid of this; would you so then wear a mask the rest of your life?

Do you know that your depiction of everyone having to always wear masks outside, and regardless of the environmental setting is just not true. In our state, we can wander all over the place outside without any mask on whatsoever. It's required that we wear masks inside professional and business setting and when we're outside within a crowd, but given that we're heading fast to a half million Americans dead from this bug, I'm not bitching about protecting myself and my wife from whoever it might be that's been half-assed about protecting themselves before showing up where I'm standing or sitting at that moment.

Some of you guys don't seem to take the time to really examine what it takes to protect yourself from this virus, and just seem to want to "Black 'n White" this mask thing as if the only choices you have is to sleep with the damn thing on or reject it all, throw away your mask-chains, and suck down that punk virus "like a real man".

Christ. Why all the friggin' drama? It's not like you're thirteen yrs old and your dad is telling you that you gotta cut your hair.

Personally, I don't care if you and your 3 favorite COVID cuties jump in bed and play Dutch Oven all afternoon. One thing I won't do is judge you if that's how you decide to manage your end of this mess.
