Exactly this. When SkepticOverlord first stated politely the site is going to be sold and said make an offer to all of us members. I said way back at that time I'd be willing to put up 2k if anybody wanted to join in the purchase. That thread is when I got an eye popping wake up of how much ATS cost to run. And thought to myself that I've said a whole bunch of stupid things on ATS, but that was buy far the most idiotic thing I've ever posted....

I don't know the first thing about running or cost of a website.

My crappy memory is a legit issue. I've hit the deck many times.

That means we need to revisit the actual reasons why the place is for sale.

Wonder how much space all of ATS would take up? Could it be preserved on some Raspberry PI running and old fidonet bbs style interface system? It wouldn't be flashy... I guess there will always be the way back machine to read old threads.

I asked the same, the answer is pages back,less than 2 tb in total, closer to 1.5-1.6tb. 40gb of posts/text, and 1.5tb the rest of it.

I understand that many ATS members simply can not afford to contribute to any ATS rescue fund - not that that's really an option as far as I can tell.

A small group of members set up a working group to look into the feasibility of buying ATS.
It looks like that attempt failed - why I have no idea and we probably won't ever find out, such is the way of these sort of things.
I think those involved were genuine and well intentioned and wanted to keep ATS going in one form or another.
Alas, other members, who did absolutely # all to try and keep ATS alive feel it upon themselves to criticise those members efforts - and that's what I was having a bit of a go at.

Err....the owners don't want to save the site.
They may wrap it up and sugar coat it but the truth is they've had enough - for whatever reasons - and they want rid of it and they want some sort of return for the time, money and effort they've put into it over the years.

Back in the day we used to have our own game server for quake 2. Lots of people lot's of threads and four or five mods.

That used to cost us about 120$ a month.
I seriously don't understand how any of theses forums are worth the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ the people ask for. Not just ATS, I dunno. I just don't think it's that expensive to keep a forum up is all. Maybe things have changed quite a bit since quake2 lol
