Most of the code exists already. The problem with ATS is that it comes from BBS era and has not seen a major update in years. The database should be easy enough. The amount of data is not a problem... easier to freeze as is, read only, old style and convert users to a new, modern system with the ability to pin old posts/threads.

Nobody custom codes any more!

Dude, surely you understand, it's not the sheer size of the database, but the number of times people access it. That's what takes the bandwidth. You can restrict this to people like 'only registered members' but then you lose the views which equate to ad revenue. It's a double edged sword.

Build your infrastructure and services only for "registered" users, OR, build your infrastructure for users who generate revenue for you from advertising, members or not. Right or wrong, in our opinion, the latter is the better business model, not the former. Ask anyone in the biz.

1) Advertising: Apparently this is not working out... but I think we're using google ads here.

If I recall correctly, in the main thread about this it was stated that not enough advertisers *want* to advertise here anymore to keep costs up, which, combined with ad blocking software is part of the money issue. In addition, the owners themselves can no longer invest the time and resources to keep it operational.

For those who have asked me, my recommendation for an alternative site with high-quality content and good management -

The Living Moon

Is a site you should consider.

They have a lot of material on a lot of subjects, deeply researched. It is basically a gold mine.

AN UPDATE

We are in discussion with a serious party who has our faith that they are committed to continuing the site in the same manner that's causing (most of) you to feel sad about ATS's potential disappearance. And, to invest in technology and monetization improvements.

More as we know it, and can say it.

????

Who doesnt write code anymore? I wouldnt imagine needing to flat out change the db schema completely unless something truly egregious was done, even then data migrations are pretty straightforward.

If they wanted to stick to a lamp stack if throw up a symfony or laravel rest api and throw some fancy new front end framework like angular in front of it and call it a day, of course Ive a feeling that db schema would need to be migrated before this could occur.

S3 is cheap, throw all static assets in there, throw a cloudflare distro in front and let them handle dns as well as edge caching, maybe even double cache user images and such via cloudflront.

Not really either or here, there are plenty strategies to minimize db iops.

Query as little as possible as infrequently as possible.

Leverage client side stores provided by newer front end frameworks.

Clever utilization of in memory data structures

Example:

Let's say ATS uses a login system, when a unser logs in, there should never need to be another query to the db for that user's information because you've already returned and stored it in memory and / or side. The only time that user information hits the db again is when you do a put, patch, or post.

Same can be applied for post, query the bare minimum, provide pagination - have a socket push new data to the client store or use something like angular that supports data streams and just subscribe to observables

conspiracies will be 10 fold in the next few years with government, aliens, technology, human rights etc... and most of all, the United States is over due for a major war.

That was fast. I guess the "for sale" red banner actually worked.

Nobody is gonna get rich here ('ceptin' for us shills). Break even. Possibly. It's nice that someone doesn't seem to care about a profit. I don't think the Amigos made much but at least they didn't have to work for a living.

Nothing ain't worth nothin, but it's free.

When I saw the red banner, not unexpected at some point, it was still a shock to see. I felt as if a dependable part of my life had been wrested from my grip and there was nothing I could do about it. Then, like a boogey man that haunts the periphery of your vision only to disappear under closer scrutiny, it was gone. I grabbed my best bottle of scotch and with spirits, both high and in hand, I saluted the pending good fortune with hope, best wishes, and thoughts of a very happy new year.

God Bless ATS

So I guess this means the attempt from a small group of members to buy the site has failed? It would be interesting to know more about that

It WOULD be interesting, but you were particularly eager to tell everybody about all the ways the site has failed while others tried to save it.

I wouldn't hold my breath.
