What got me started on this was one guy I talked to yesterday.

He and his wife have kept a small neighborhood shop open for decades, employing only a couple of people. Good people who often extended credit to people who had none, so they could get their old beater car fixed to get to work. Beloved people. They by no means earn even close to a middle income. I learned about him from a now deceased employee of mine, who had often relied on him to fix his car without paying up front.

He stopped taking pay and kept right on paying his two employees out of his own pocket and now, he's shutting down Feb. 1st, broken and destitute, facing the possibility of being homeless shortly after.

I'd not be surprised if the suicide rates double, but I looked, and they have stopped posting the stat's on the States site.
Um. Double you say? Did you read the Suicides in Japan thread by chance? Because that might be a baseline for where the rest of the world is headed, just not quite yet.

But it’s coming very soon. And it’s f’ing grim

“Double”. Lmao.

Edit: why am I reminded of the show The Leftovers. Odd...

No wonder they haven’t posted US suicide rates recently...

You think a significant number of people who suffered no financial harm are doing that? Most people don't even understand that the small businesses are not wealthy, and do not make a lot of money. In fact most work harder than most people for less pay, because they want to be self-sufficient. A lot of them are hidden and people don't even realize the community benefits from their work.

I'll survive, barely, but after talking to people that will not all day long it concerns me. That and knowing how society will treat them when they join the ranks of homeless. People will just look at the bum, why should I help them.

Me too. I mean, the devil itself couldn't dream up such a horrible dilemma for the human race than this COVID thing.

I'm not any kind of socialist or communist, but I feel strongly that this is what a government by the people suppose to do in cases like this.

This is not welfare in any way IMO.

This is worse than a natural disaster

Sure, charities need to be organized to help, but ultimately our government should step in and make people whole… That's my opinion.. that's my philosophy.

I also think how anemic an economy is depends in part on what state you live in too. Things aren't great here, but most places are hanging on because after the first shut down which was short, our governor made sure there was no strong impetus to lock down again.

The mayor may want to, but he's outnumbered by every place around.

The industry here hurting the worst is the restaurant industry because of the restrictions on capacity, but even then, most places with strong, established clientele are making it. It's the downtown which was always on heavy subsidy that's dying.

Well whose fault is that?

You know people on this forum have been bagging on those darn business owners as being rich for years now. Where do you think they got all that nonsense from? The very same politicians who then shut those same businesses down.

The problem is the disease can not also be the cure... charities aren't doing particularly well because people don't have anything left to give... that doesn't matter to the government though because there's always more to take from you even if all you have left to give is your life...

If the government swoops in to "help" where are they going to get the "money" from... print more... maybe borrow more from China... then what... the bill always comes due... and the squeamish may want to close their eyes this go around... because it's going to be ugly on a biblical level...

Again why the answer is to let the businesses go and do their thing.

You can't expect the car to move when you have the parking brake engaged.

As a x-business owner as of November 4th, I think those responsible for the draconian measures and violating the constitution while doing so should be held responsible and should have to pay their life savings in the form of restitution for those whose rights they violated. The public did not do this and is not responsible beyond electing folks that would rather wipe their tail with the constitution then follow its guidelines. All of this could have been prevented by allowing social services beef up the care and well being of the most vulnerable rather than punishing an entire population with useless measures. Instead idiots like in New York took steps to expose our vulnerable population. If we had done things this way the Wuhan virus would not be able to spread here as herd immunity would have wiped it out and our elderly and vulnerable population would not be at risk.

if you think they were shut down and destroyed to protect us you are the problem.

You are being brainwashed and used by a corporate oligarchy and the Private Central Banking system.

The whole purpose of the virus in the first place is to destroy the middle class.

You are witnessing the greatest transfer of wealth in human history.

We are at war with the same #ers who sent us to war for the past 120 years if not 500 years when centralized banking was created.

People need to wake the # up. If you thought 2020 was bad just wait till how many people commit suicide in 2021.

Welcome to hell on earth, this is what conspiracy theorists been warning about for 80 years now?

oh yeah forgot to mention, this could all be stopped by proper vitamin d levels but you will never hear the medical industry say a god damn thing because it wont make them money.

But it was, when tax dollars were given mainly to the corps, for no good reason.

No wonder Rudi baby's brown 'trickle down' was about him needing to ghost Trump's head up some big corp's ass.

My Dad met for luch with Pompeo when he was in town.
From his talks about China, my best guess is we are looking at a massive corporate pushback
All of this bs is related imo A realignment with a new manufacturing supply chain.
Major corporate pushback towards Trump.
Short sighted corporations freaking out about a small profit drop during the interim

They just printed the cash, didn't come from tax revenue, as far as I know.

A lot of business owners around here are the old school kind. "I don't need no government to hold my hand", work for everything you have kind of folks. For them to sell their pride isn't something they should ever be forced to do. But if you are forced out of work, by the government, you don't have an option. I'd say make the Pinheads who ordered this pay for it, but well, they use our money, and what the don't they just print up and base it off of good vibes rather than Gold.

Seems we should have some kind of right not to have this happen. It's a shame we didn't make a paper of some kind to guide us.....

Yeah it's not good. I am willing to bet my life on suicide rates in the US in the first month, in one big city, surpassing the total death rates to date.
-even allowing them to prioritize classification of deaths in comorbidity cases.
Funny thing to bet on such a bet. But irony is no stranger to ATS this year... I’ve been looking. But sneaky google and stupid year not being over yet have prevented ahem, certain sites from uploading such statistical info.

I wonder why that is...

I haven't tried this yet, but later in the day i will.

I run a small business. I will not be closing again, I will be resisting any future shutdowns. Just put up a brand new bright neon OPEN sign too.
