The third party testing data is critical and that must be organized ASAP so that people aren't given a false sense of security.

I'm curious - what, exactly, do you expect massive additional testing to show?

Interestingly, I think the reality is the opposite of what you suggest. In my opinion, wide-spread testing will provide a very real sense of security and major dampening of the fear-mongering, because it will show that the CFR is much, much lower than the current raw/available numbers show. So, I'm all for massive increased testing, but...

What is far more important, in my opinion, are real solid stats, especially for those who died, showing combined relevant information that for some reason, is pretty hard to find or non-existent: ages, underlying health conditions, symptom severity, and most importantly, was treatment needed (and if so, what was needed/how invasive).

Guys, I've been very busy these past weeks and couldn't keep up with the news. I have friends and family who still think "it's just a flu" but I know it's not. Based on current data/numbers, what's the mortality rate? Is it deadlier? My parents don't even wanna hear it, so I need to come up with something to convince them. Thanks!

I have found they aren’t keeping this as up to date as they were before (likely overwhelming). Canada, for example, has been shown sitting at 109 for the last several days but that was our last weekend number. We are at at least 179 official cases now.

158 according to...

I guess it depends in the source....not much real transparency anywhere though.

Stoke Sentinel

Royal Stoke hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, UK is clearing a second ward of patients to prepare for an increase in Corona cases. They already have one patient from out of town in their first infectious diseases ward.

I posted on thread 4, page 240 about my experience being ill over this last month. Well, on Tuesday morning my daughter started to experience symptoms of an asthma attack. She increased her inhaler usage according to her Asthma care plan, but by Tuesday night she was feeling really bad (tightness in her chest and wheezing) and her inhalers were doing nothing.
I called 111 to get advice on what to do, and was told to make our way to the emergency doctor surgery. I don't drive so we had to get taxis.
We've been through this a number of times in the past so I was fully expecting her to be given steroids, put on a nebuliser, or both. It turned out that her chest was clear, there was no wheeze, and she was about to start with "a virus".
Since then she has developed a fever, chills, headache, neck/shoulder pain, sensitivity to light and a cough

I'm keeping a close eye on her, but as the NHS are refusing to test anyone who isn't in hospital now, there is no way of knowing whether this is Corona or just another virus. And if it is Corona, I am now responsible for potentially infecting 2 taxi drivers and the doctor who examined my daughter (all of which appeared to be in the 60+ bracket).

Alongside this, I spoke to my mum a couple of days ago and she asked me to house/dogsit for them as they're soon booking a holiday abroad in May/June. I was shocked and just said it depends what happens with the virus. I'm going to be speaking with them again tonight to tell them that it's not going to happen. I'm not willing to risk it, my daughter and I will be firmly sheltering in place now.

Dayton Ohio: Hear it here before it hits the news: new case at Austin Landing. I work in the same building as a guy who was diagnosed positive just today. Kroger, Sams, Costcos have all been bat-$ht-crazy since Dewine gave his speech yesterday; can't imagine what will happen when this hits the news. I have been stocking up since the first posts of Part 1, so I'm good for 4 to 6 months. The wife and I have had coughs with no fever for 4 weeks and now the daughter has bad cough and sore throat. If we have it I hope if passes quickly and uneventfully through our household. We have already established that it is going to be impossible to keep the others in our house from getting it. In order to avoid it you have to live your currently healthy life like you already have it: light switches, remotes, cabinet doors, door knobs.... oh, and that doesn't even account for the airborne aspect of it. I will try to keep posting as this unfolds for my family.

Visits to federal inmates halted over virus

WASHINGTON (AP) — Inmates at all 122 federal correctional facilities across the country will no longer be allowed visits from family, friends or attorneys for the next 30 days, in response to the threat of the coronavirus, officials told The Associated Press on Friday.

The restrictions, now in effect, were portrayed as a precaution, since no federal inmates or Bureau of Prisons staff members have tested positives for COVID-19. The officials said some exceptions could be made for legal visits.

The plan to temporarily suspend visitation, curtail staff travel and pause inmate transfers is part of the bureau’s action plan for concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus for the 175,000 inmates in BOP custody.

Guardian live feed is reporting that a few UK Insurers, are no longer providing Travel Insurance to new customers, to concentrate on their existing customers.

I take it that means that if you decide to travel from the UK, you won't be insured ?

Breaking a long, long Hiatus from this site.

To point something out. The John's Hopkins site
John's Hopkins Covid-19 Tracking

Is no longer reporting cases in certain states of the United States. Notably, Texas and Colorado.
I have family in Texas, so this is worrisome. I hope it's just a temporary glitch.

I live near Kansas City and we have 4 confirmed cases in Johnson County, KS and Tuesday a man from an long-term care facility in Wyandotte County, KS was transferred to an area hospital, diagnosed positive with COVID-19, and died Wednesday morning...less than 24 hours after being admitted to the hospital.

Gov. Laura Kelly announces Kansas' first coronavirus-related death

Strangely, the Johns Hopkins tracking site that I have been checking currently lists NO COVID-19 in Kansas or Missouri, but DID yesterday.

First off, thank you ATS, Agit8dChop, and all who have contributed updates and valuable first hand information! This is ATS at it's finest and I must say that it's quite refreshing to see that we can still come together despite our difference politically (thankfully which have mostly been left outside the thread) and share knowledge and thoughts about a major world wide event.

Kudos to all!

For the, "this isn't as bad as the flu," crowd, we are just getting started here in the U.S. and are a month or more behind places that have had much more meaningful impacts upon their infrastructure; I'm thinking of Italy and Iran here. The snowball effect has barely even begun.

"Onesies and twosies," are only the visible surface numbers. Forgive the analogy, but it's kind of like cockroaches; for every one you see, there are x number more you don't. It's the x number we don't see that will leap up and bite us in the ass, in relatively short order.

Again, it's not just the fatality rate which should concern us, it's also the percentage of those infected who require intensive medical care. There is only so much capacity in any healthcare system, and once that capacity is reached, it's all downhill from there as the things which are currently sending people to the hospital will still be happening but, due to this virus, may not be able to get the attention needed.

We are beginning to see some of the knock on effects I alluded to in my post in part 4 of this series of threads, and it won't be long before those are felt over wider and wider regions.

Supply lines will be affected, and this will lead to shortages and the eventual repercussions of same. It won't be pretty.

Some already have made mention in the end of the last thread how their grocery items were eyeballed and how they were approached by other shoppers inquiring about buying their toilet paper while in line to fill prescriptions; it is only going to get worse.

Joke all you want, condescend to those of us who have been trying to sound the warning, keep telling yourself, "it's not as bad as the flu." None of it will matter when the very real outcomes are facing you and you're unable to get some of the basic necessities at stores.

Thanks to this series of threads, and not a little paranoia on my part, I was ahead of the curve and stocked up on items some are finding difficult to locate now. If your area has not been hit, now is the time to stock up while you still can, otherwise you'll find yourself looking at empty grocery store shelves and hordes of people waiting the unloading of new shipments who won't be very polite when it comes to getting what they think they can't live without.

As many of us have said, it's not the virus that is frightening (although for many it is due to underlying health concerns they themselves have or those of their of family), it's the societal impacts which are second and third order outcomes many can't seem to comprehend until it's too late.

You could show then that picture of the Graph of the Two US Cities during the Spanish Flu, and point out that the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few.
They need to know about it, to not spread it.

I am posting this message from my daughter that I just received.
She is in a ski mountain resort in Colorado.
"The whole town is shut down, restaurants are closing, no one has work, the schools are closed, the sports center is closed. There's no work for the service industry workers. I'm outta here!
Tent time. Isolation.
Instead of paying sick leave, the restaurants are just straight up closing."
The mountain communities are really suffering. The grocery stores do not carry much inventory.
They are in a tough, tough situation.

Who said they were scared? I missed that because I didn't.

Isn't that how it typically starts??? oneies twosie etc etc?
Sure and thus, we have the FLU and other illnesses.

Guess what? People are still GETTING SICK, but not from Coronovirus, the world has stopped for Coronovirus, yet it doesn't stop for illnesses with larger death tolls.

You seem to be ignoring the fact that this never existed before December. At some point in December this all started with one person. You know the onesie you're referring to. Given enough time this could top the viruses and dieses you're referring too.

thank u! why is no one undestanding this point

18h58 Local time, from the Live news feed :

"A 'Reduced Offer' of RATP and SNCF transport next week"

RATP are the Underground and Bus people in Paris, and the SNCF are the National rail line.

Less trains/undergrounds, means more people packed into the remaining ones.
Oh FFS, and I start back monday.

Congressman furious overseas service members aren't being tested for coronavirus -- because there are no test kits

Rep. Mark Pocan, a Wisconsin Democrat, released a statement following a lack of a response from the Army regarding whether the military had sufficient coronavirus testing kits.

In a letter to defense officials, Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat, addressed concerns that deployed members of Wisconsin’s Army National Guard to Afghanistan were operating in areas believed to have confirmed cases of COVID-19 and that the unit may not have access to testing kits.

In the statement, Pocan said his office was contacted about a military base near the Iranian border where personnel had flu symptoms but did not test positive for the flew. Pocan’s office said the base was about 5 miles from an Afghan town known to have a handful of coronavirus cases.

MSNBC’s Andrew Mitchell noted that it isn’t merely Afghanistan, there are members of the armed forces in Italy and in west Asia.

“We asked the Department of Defense whether the Army has coronavirus testing kits physically at all bases abroad," the statement reads. "After following up, they are still unable to tell us yes or no answer—does every military base overseas have current access to coronavirus kits?

“The fact that we cannot figure out this basic answer for our troops serving abroad is very concerning. I hope that the military can get us an affirmative answer immediately," Pocan’s letter reads.
