CV-19 has a long way to go to catch up with the FLU, in prevalence and mortality.

According to an estimate by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 45 million cases of the flu in the United States during the 2017-2018 influenza season, resulting in an estimated 810,000 flu-associated hospitalizations and an estimated 61,000 flu-associated deaths.
cnsnews.com...

Hopefully, CoronaVirus-19 will not get anywhere near as bad as the common flu has been.

Italy (ITALY!!) has 29 deaths already.

But you can beat this. Just think about the poor-working with 3 jobs, all in public space like retail, fast food etc. and NO sick days.

Yayyyyyy....

Hang on, that doesn't make sense. No history of travel, or contact with any Covid-19 infectee. So how the hell did did he get it, if indeed it was a Coronavirus-related death? There's just way too much misinformation and misdirecting information with regard to this virus.

Naturally-occurring flu kills thousands a year globally, and we never see this kind of over-hyped response by either governments or the MSM. The response looks to be for something more than flu-related. They don't indicate publicly that they may use emergency powers for naturally-occurring flu. We have have had leaflets at work explaining how we should respond if we fall within a certain Coronavirus criteria. We have never had such leaflets for colds or flu.

No history means they can't pinpoint where he came in contact. He obviously contacted or crossed paths with someone infected though.

Coronavirus Death Was King County Man; More Cases In WA Confirmed

health & fitness Shared from Seattle, WA Coronavirus Death Was King County Man; More Cases In WA Confirmed The death, the first in the United States, was announced by Seattle and King County health officials; two additional cases confirmed. By Lucas Combos, Patch Staff Feb 29, 2020 10:05 am PT | Updated Feb 29, 2020 6:44 pm PT SEATTLE, WA — A Washington man has died from COVID-19 — the new strain of coronavirus linked to China — marking the first known death connected to the illness in the United States as the total number of cases in the country rose to 22, with cases confirmed in individuals who had not traveled to areas affected by the virus. The patient who died after contracting the virus was a King County man in his 50s with a chronic illness, which prompted the initial coronavirus testing, Seattle and King County health officials said at a Saturday news conference. Earlier on Saturday, federal health officials said they erroneously identified the patient as a woman in a briefing with President Trump and Vice President Pence, leading to Trump announcing that the patient was a woman at a White House news conference.

the panic

It should also be mentionted that Corona can be totally harmless:
In the city of Tübingen, Germany, the head MD of pathology at the university hospital has contracted Corona. He is held under quarantine and says he feels ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, no symptoms, no fever, nothing. Same holds true for his daughter and her friend who also are infected (they made a trip to Italy). Corona is no death sentence, you may not even notice that you have it!

In or near Seattle - a postal worker has tested positive for COVID-19! Two elders in an old folks home tested positive! One highschooler tested positive! Not one had relationships with travel anywhere outside the U.S.

How they even got the government to test them, I don't know! But this is what happens when the government refuses to test anyone unless they have symptoms AND have been to China - we get leaks! For one thing, people can spread this virus WITHOUT symptoms!

Anyway, hopefully, Trump starts testing more. The lack of testing is going to cause outbreaks everywhere because there is NO WAY to contain the virus if you don't test for it, no joke.

In Hawaii, they are trying to get the U.S. government to allow them to import test kits from Japan because our government has seriously dropped the ball on this one. No joke.

In Washington State, they have to do tiered testing because there are not currently enough test kits to test all of the suspected cases and all of the future cases by any means.

However - there could be outbreaks RIGHT NOW in places like Chicago and New York and no one would be the wiser because of lack of testing.

In Washington State, experts predict the virus has been circling in the population for three weeks undetected.

Sure, it CAN go without symptoms. Which means that it can SPREAD from people without symptoms, too. In other news, around 20% of cases DO have symptoms that require hospitalization and oxygen support. Good luck covering up those numbers when the virus hits near you - viruses don't listen to political spin!

You're playing a losing game by downplaying this virus, imo. In past pandemics, politicians who downplayed them got decimated from political fallout.

I guarantee the virus is spreading in the U.S. Trump has two choices - ignore it, which will make him look like an idiot, or do something about it, which would require him to admit his containment strategy failed.

I can answer this. He got the virus from the community spread. It's a fact. The virus is circling in Seattle right now amongst regular folk with no travel history. It's a fact - there have been multiple cases like this.

I hope Trump supporters don't start denying these kinds of facts! That is an EXTREMELY dangerous game for them to play, I don't see it ending well for them politically if they keep it up.

If Republicans deny the virus is a threat, I guarantee they will look like idiots in the coming months. So I would recommend changing their stance asap to avoid negative consequences to their political situation.

If Democrats keep on saying it's "just the flu" (like the WHO was) it also has negative consequences for them politically. Just trying to inform you all about the dynamics here. Democrats are not immune to underplaying this disease at all! They are doing it all over the place in Europe, I hear.

In Italy, the right-wing is serious about the virus while the left-wing thinks it is "just the flu." So think about how your political biases might be blinding you to the reality of the situation.

Anything Trump did before impeachment has been over and dealt with, and I actually think he faces quite a hard time right now. I have empathy for him. But I DO NOT have empathy for people who deny factual information about this virus, like pretending it isn't spreading when it is.

Actually, I guess I could have empathy for these people if they are being misled and don't have the skills to determine for themselves the mathematics of the viral threat.

Even in Trump's situation, he probably fired all of his advisors who actually knew anything, so he doesn't really have any way to get accurate information about the virus. I'm not surprised he is having trouble right now. Between Trump (with no real skills to handle an emergency) and his yes-men (who don't add much to his administration) I'm not sure he is in a good spot. This last paragraph is just my opinion.

I'm trying to say that Trump put himself in a tight spot. He is going to have to actually lead during a crisis (not his strong suit) and in order to deal with the virus, he will have to listen to scientists (which he doesn't). I have empathy for his situation! What a black swan! But he brought it upon himself in some ways.

Hello elsium! The flu has killed more people than COVID-19 this year... so far. But if you look at the virus statistics, it is around 20x deadlier than the flu, and it even spreads at least twice as easily as the flu. In addition to this - around 20% of cases require hospitalization with oxygen support. In addition to this, being a novel virus, our immune systems are not ready for it, and there is no vaccination (unlike the flu) so there are no fire breaks in the population to slow the infection down.

Experts expect 30-60% of the population could be infected this year - so around 4 billion people. If 2% die, that is around 80 million deaths maybe?

The only way to stop the spread of this virus is to contain it, and containment requires testing, which America at least, has failed at entirely.

I know in England, they only have 15-30 hospital beds capable of holding the patients who need the most intensive care. However, if we imagine 5% of the sick need this type of care (a reasonable number given the data we have now) and 30% of England gets infected (a lowball estimate) then we are talking about 825,000 people needing those beds. This is assuming a population of 55 million.

Competent leaders know that this is an issue and therefore they are going to possibly have to shut down entire cities to contain the spread or else risk overwhelming the healthcare system, causing the death rate to skyrocket higher than the 2% death rate (which is WITH decent hospital care).

All you have to do is run the numbers and do the math, and you can see this is a dire situation. I'm studying to be a data analyst, so I look at data and ignore politics with this sort of thing. You have to look at where the data says the virus is gonna go, not listen to politicians, whose main focus is NOT accurate information but spinning the situation to give them some sort of (temporary) political advantage.

I'm trying to help you out a bit here, hopefully I wasn't too negative towards you.

Why race?

Patients are entitled to privacy as well as patients families.

In his 70's with issues...bottom line we are going to lose some seniors with this virus..and personal sick time...the responsible person will quarantine his family if one gets ill bit that means you can be in your home for perhaps a month more depending on when symptoms present..

Here's the thing though.

Without proven effective treatments and without a vaccine, you present with viral pneumonia. The treatment for that is what it is no matter what caused it. And lots of things can cause viral pneumonia. Flu causes it.

So half a dozen of one, six of the other on that. You're getting the same treatment if they know what's causing your viral pneumonia is COVID or if it's influenza. At most it matters for issues of infection prevention for everyone around you because there is no herd immunity, but the basics of those measures are the same even. It's the heavier containment measures that would be implemented for COVID.
