I just got over a silent(no symptom)UTI in December that landed me in the ER. I don't want to risk that right now. Also got some Cranberry pills just in case.

Sorry, posted something natural treatment for UTIs, forgot I'm not supposed to do that...

Yesterday when I was driving the announcer reported that there was going to be a holographic concert performance by [deceased] Whitney Houston. The timing seems very interesting.

This may become the new standard not just for singers and performers but may also become the norm for any public figure.
Political figures cannot afford to be exposed. Just look at the Iranian health minister.
Currently the hologram figures are not 3D but there has been a lot of research done to perfect this technology so that it is 360 hologram.

IOC on the Olympics.

In an exclusive interview, Dick Pound, a senior member of the IOC and former Olympian, told the AP that they'll make a final determination in late May as to whether the Tokyo, Japan, games will go on.

“In and around that time, I’d say folks are going to have to ask: ‘Is this under sufficient control that we can be confident about going to Tokyo or not?’ ...As the games draw near, he said, “a lot of things have to start happening. You’ve got to start ramping up your security, your food, the Olympic Village, the hotels. The media folks will be in there building their studios. ... If the IOC decides the games cannot go forward as scheduled in Tokyo, “you’re probably looking at a cancellation,” he said."

I think this is messy.

Even if by May, Tokyo is over the worst and looks to be trending back toward normal, you have to consider what's going on in the rest of the world. This is a global event with contingents coming from lots of countries. Just because Japan may be trending toward the clear, well, it took Spanish Flu a year to go around the world, so in this case, you may have countries in all stages of their epidemics with this.

Could you ask athletes to travel in who may be coming from countries deep in the grip of epidemic? What about those who are coming from places not yet suffering so much? How about those whose countries are past it?

How do you bring in all those athletes and their contingent fans and try to mix them and assure that everyone stays safe and healthy?

Do you ask some not to come because it's too risky?

I think we may be looking at a cancellation even if Japan is coming back by May unless things start to trend significantly back toward normal or we suddenly have a treatment or vaccine.

"Ok, but... is the flu contained? The common cold? Get my meaning?"

SARS was a virus that was beat/contained

I stand corrected... thanks!

So, all things considered, it is likely that COVID-19 will go the same route. Good, happy to be wrong in that case.

That said, this begs a question I keep forgetting to ask...

If, like SARS, COVID-19 is spread by close contact/ droplets from coughing/sneezing, why/how do asymptomatic people become 'super-spreaders'? I mean, I can understand they may spread it to a few people - spouse (kissing/sexual contact), kids (kissing, extremely close body contact), etc, but how can they be a 'super-spreader'?

My wife went to the store and picked up a few more things last night, nothing to extravagant. As she was leaving Walmart the person at the door scanned her receipt and made a little comment about how she had a pretty long list of stuff, mostly small inexpensive things.

My wife isn't shy and really doesnt care what anybody thinks and said that she was getting a jump on a few supplies just in case there was a run on the stores. The employee then proceeded to tell her that she is not the only one and she has seen many people stocking up and a few were spending a pretty high amount of money just in case.

She then ran into a friend of ours at the local farm/supply store to pick up some other essentials, not to be mentioned here, and a few water jugs. Our friend was actually making fun of her/us for attempting to think ahead and care for our family if something arises. Like laughing at us. I just don't get it.

That is something that is still hard to wrap my head around and I am having a hard time grasping how people can be so naive that they are certain that nothing will happen.

My wife said after seeing what she bought they might second guess coming to our house in case something happens. It kind of made a statement on how serious we were.

My wife is doing a Costco run this morning, the parking lot was packed and they opened early. So we’re dropping a few hundred there and at BJs just in case. It’s like the holidays she said. People everywhere and signs limiting number of items you can buy.

I told her to grab cold meds too, since I’m getting a head cold and cough....oooooooOOOOOOOOoooooo, *dramatic
Music* DUN Dun dun.

Still not worried just aggravated.

There is no way we are at 15 cases, that doesn't seem remotely realistic.

I agree - but the significant thing we know is, there is no real evidence that there is an underlying/hidden extreme number of cases, either, certainly nothing to indicate an epidemic.

I don't think it's widespread, but based on what we are seeing in other countries, I think it can become widespread very quickly. As in within a couple of days quickly.

Ok, I won't argue that, but I'll ask yet again...

What difference does it make, if the vast majority of people who get it remain asymptomatic and/or only have minor symptoms? This means that all we need to do is not create panic that causes people to flood their local hospitals/doctors offices for every sniffle or cough, and encourage people to take extra precautions if they are in the high risk group.

We're a commuter family, so our shopping is mostly weekend.

This weekend, we're looking to bolster what we have food wise and fill in the hygiene items (nothing worse than running out of soap, detergent, TP), pet items, and stuff like that.

I'm making a list of things as I go along this week. We'll likely have to hit the credit cards a bit (sucks), but bonus comes in April, so we'll settle it out then.

We already hit the things husband figures he will need if he has to go out while we stay in if we get caught in a self-quarantine. He's worked labs with pathogens. He'll be the one to go out and take the risk. So, gloves, wipes, disinfectants, etc. ... we have those.

And thank God, Germany is off the table as of this morning.

This seems to be a glass half empty kind of group.
Just saying.

Wishing you all the best.

I honestly do not think this is going to be some mass killer.

Think positive people.

Wow... maybe the world is coming to an end...

I actually agree with you on something!

I just want to make sure I can shelter in place for a couple months if I'm asked to without running out of soap, food and toilet paper.

It's already going to be stressful enough with a hyperactive, cranky 9-year-old without all of us being stanky.

I have some family members that have laughed at me for being prepared. I don't get it either. The CDC is now saying publicly to get prepared, but it just goes right over their heads. I have enough stuff for my family of 5 for about 6 months. I may have to take in my mother as well, so that will cut into it some. She is one of those that just say, "well let's just wait and see."

I would rather be prepared than starve.

I gathered some extra supplies to absorb the panic if/when people find out corona virus in town or close. For a few weeks, grocery stores will get restocked. I dunno. About having month(s) supplies of dry goods. Nothing wrong with that etc. I have food for a few weeks thou, can goods, jerky, oatmeal water, gas and generator, already had that stuff I live in hurricane country.

Current U.S. population is right around 327 million. Let's say 1/3 of the population contracts this virus, that gives us 107,910,000.

From my prior post excerpting The Lancet, approximately 24.3% of these people will become severe.

Just to toss in a stat on this number (thanks to Asgaard), the 26% risk factor is only for people 60+. The risk factor drops to 1.3% for 50-59, and 0.4% for those 49 and under. Those numbers are risk factor for deaths, but I think they should be a rough approximation for the risk factor for cases that become severe.

What this means is, we should focus on the high risk groups.

Pushing the panic button will only cause everyone that gets a tiny sniffle or cough to flood the hospitals and doctors offices. This will result in those who need those services to be very negatively impacted.

What the CDC needs to do is tell people these risk factors, reassure them, and focus on the high risk groups. But no, RR's sister would rather create panic, because #OrangeManBad.

Tornado alley here, so we always have some stuff on hand. Plus in the winter, you have ice storms that can knock out your power for days or longer. My folks are also stocked for that type thing, so they have a jump too.

We're just adding to what we already have and building in around it to try to minimize any trips out.
