My husband and i were just talking about this. With some rice, instant potatoes, canned veggies and fruit, soup, frozen veggies and a some frozen meat you can eat well for several weeks.

Well, frozen meat has to stay frozen, so...

You might also consider some good canned stuff - I'm stocking up on canned wild caught sardines and salmon.

Feel you on some not being able to afford to prep completely. But then again, complete prep is likely impossible no matter the funds available.

I would like to point out that a 50lb bag of rice is approx $20 American. In that 50 lbs you have approx 82,750 calories, or 41 days at 2000 calories a day. So everybody can surely afford to do some reasonable prep.

Hey BPilgrim:
Yah....I have plenty of rice, and peanut butter and canned tuna. Protein is king, and staples very necessary. However, I am talking more about acetomenophin, lysol/bleach/, toilet paper, etc. Yeah. Mostly, most of us, no matter how broke can afford some rice......
thanks and regards,
tetra

My point was, with government and healthcare being prioritized for shipments of masks, we could see shortages of those specific items without prep or panic buying from the general population. Wouldn't expect fo find any other 'out of stock' items in a hardware store because there isn't a mass purchasing of those items by gov and med.

I'm seeing this in my field (dentist). One of my suppliers has been back ordered for 2 weeks with masks and the other is only sending out 5 boxes of masks at a time. So far, exam nitrile exam gloves are still plentiful. I'll be curious as to how this plays out.
I'm in the U.S., by the way.

If you have a freezer full of meat and the power goes out, you can always slice it thin and dry it... biltong, jerky, pemmican... etc. Pack it in plastic bins and it will keep well that way.

Another ill omen in the market... unlike yesterday, today is tanking across the entire board. It does not appear that investors are seeking safe havens, it almost looks like investors are pulling their money out completely as gold is even suffering losses. Treasury note yields continue to plummet, so that would seem to be the recipient of money not completely withdrawn from the market.

DOW is currently down 800, S&P 500 is seeing all but 9 companies posting losses, NASDAQ is down overall, but is seeing some big gains among biotech and pharmaceutical firms... illness is profitable, apparently.

Jesus, DOW might be in freefall... it's dropped another 70 points just in the time it took me to type this post.

I did it yesterday, so I'll do it today... Prediction: It's now dropped another 110 points since I started this post, no prediction today, we've now reached panic sell off and there's no telling where it goes.

Not sure if posted yet can't get link to work

Washington (CNN)There is mounting concern on Capitol Hill that more needs to be done to contain the coronavirus, the contagious respiratory disease that started in China and has reached from Iran to the US, with Republicans and Democrats outwardly expressing alarm and outrage.

In a tense exchange Tuesday, Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana pressed acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf over the issue during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing.

I just did another dollar store run and stocked up on medicine and thermometers. I also decided to stock up on Methenamine aka Azo Pills. I just got over a silent(no symptom)UTI in December that landed me in the ER. I don't want to risk that right now. Also got some Cranberry pills just in case.

Ok, but... is the flu contained? The common cold? Get my meaning?

SARS was a virus that was beat/contained

You forgot the last word... YET...

Suggesting it was on its way to being rampant. I simply pointed out that we have been stuck at 15 for weeks, which indicates we are far from it in any meaningful way.

Or perhaps not. There is no way we are at 15 cases, that doesn't seem remotely realistic. From the Washington Post:

Experts fear the small number of U.S. coronavirus cases reflects limited testing rather than a lack of infections

I don't think it's widespread, but based on what we are seeing in other countries, I think it can become widespread very quickly. As in within a couple of days quickly.

I hear you, I definitely can't afford everything I'd like to have. Maybe a priorities list?

1. Food and Water - healthy or sick you'll need these
2. Sanitation Products and Med Gear - to hopefully keep you from becoming sick
3. Medications - fever and pain reducers, anti-diarrheals, etc. just in case
4. Toilet Paper - would be inconvenient to run out

List not necessarily for you, maybe someone will find it helpful.

I agree. The low US numbers makes me super nervous. There's just NO WAY there aren't higher numbers! I think the general public doesnt' realize that the US isn't really testing for it

in line at local Walmart Neighborhood grocery... 12:00 all items in cart
the 2 people with huge, over loaded large grocery carts (both had $150 grocery lists) which were in line ahead of me

it took the single checkout cashier the full 33 minutes to process the three of us...

Prepping, & doing a months' supply of daily-used products was the planned shopping spree intention...

Good for them... the ordinary people are taking heed to prepare for a self imposed quarantine.... these 30ish to 40ish women seemed too dressy for a Walmart,,,, they looked more like Publix & Tarjet' types to me

So, i'm comfortable seeing the front line of preppers in action, thus knowing i'm not being overboard in Conspiracy Theory with this WuFlu Crisis/COVID19 fatality virus

cache' -> 6 masks. 20 prs gloves/10 are latex/respirator and full body suit/bag & fingers crossed mostly...
stored H20 & 8 rain-barrels for sewer waste flushing

the Quarantine Signs cost too much to buy & ship

yup!
About water.
Is there anything known about the virus being in the water supply?
I have water filters for years, but still depend on the supply of tap water for most part. I have a water pit but it's only 50m deep so I don't think it's suitable for consumption, not even with a filter....

We have a water well also, 48 m. deep. The water is more than suitable for drinking (WITHOUT any treatment or filter), It has been the only thing I've been drinking for the last 3 years (and natural juices, not bought, never even tasted alcohol beverage, and stopped drinking Sprite and Ginger ale, never smoked also xD). BUT that depends on the minerals present in your zone, fertilizers used in the area and how they treat the sewage near you. Your best bet, like we did, is to take a sample of the water and send it to analyze for minerals, chemicals and biological "things". If I were you, I'd do that ASAP. The minerals are a problem (Please read the next paragraph about it), but if any bacteria is found you can boil the water before drinking it, check this page for that: Link about disinfecting water for emergency.

***If the water has minerals and it is undrinkable, you will need a special filter for it, not any Carbon Activated Filter will work as some minerals and metals can get past them. From Link: (bold text done by me)

Note that on its own, activated carbon doesn’t remove every contaminant. Certain minerals, salts, and metals can slip through the filter. However, much of this is only true for GAC filters. Carbon block filters are capable of removing many more pollutants, including metals such as lead. Carbon block filters also remove microbiological contaminants from drinking water, including waterborne pathogens. The best carbon block filters reduce pollutants like arsenic, asbestos, mercury, and radon.

You could also distillate it. However distilled water might be harmful for your health (I WOULD NOT drink it). From Link:

When the body loses water through sweating and urine output, it loses sodium and other minerals in addition to water. In order for the body to function properly, those minerals must be replaced.

Drinking distilled water will not replace minerals lost through sweat, since all additives and minerals have been removed during the distillation process.

However, As most people eat and drink a variety of food and beverages throughout the day, most people will get the salts and minerals they need from these other sources.

This lack of minerals and additives would only pose a significant risk if distilled water was the only fluid or food that a person consumed.

If you do the analysis and it has bad minerals, ask them what filter they recommend.

Hope this helps for others also.

The Canadian expert leading the World Health Organization (WHO) team in China responding to the new coronavirus departed Beijing without entering quarantine before landing in Geneva on Tuesday and going straight to a press conference, where he appeared without a mask.

www.theepochtimes.com...

He said he was very careful and that his team had no contact with patients in China or even contact with people who were in contact with suspected or confirmed patients.
