I think we can all agree that the most valuable thing a person should seek in life is meaning and not purpose , it is clear that traditional religion indeed gives the average individual a sense of personal meaning which allows people to live a fulfilled and happy life. However believing in a purpose can be dangerous because it suggest that there is an objective reason for our existence or why we live , for religious people this type of thinking can lead to Fundamentalism and for Atheists it usually leads to Nihilism.

Most scholars & archeologists agree that a lot of verses In the hebrew bible have been misinterpreted especially those regarding the Afterlife and the End times most of which were just metaphorical & symbolic. And what frustrates me is that all those books and films of individuals who claimed they had been to hell/heaven and back were admittedly made up , Having clinnically died myself I'm not surprised because I had no memories during death at all. So why is it necessary to include hysterical and misinterpreted doctrines in religion?

When I see hyper religious people going to church , praying and yearning for answers It's clear most of them are just looking for meaning and not some special purpose. So can we reform religion and completly get rid of all these hysterical and irational beliefs?

(don't get me wrong I believe we need religion and that religion can improve the well-being of a person but it can also cause alot of misery if misinterpreted)

What you mean "We," paleface? Seriously. If you haven't noticed, religious adherents BELIEVE in their fantasies. You are not going to wave a wand and "reform" these religions. Can you imagine trying to change Islam? How about Christianity. I mean, which branch? How about the Mormons? Good luck.

Are you willing to go tell a group of fanaticals that they are irrational, wrong and need to change??

I'd break out the popcorn and would pay money to see that conversation happen.

True although perhaps reformation can start in schools , children can be educated from a young age not to misinterpret religious text.

And Christianity brought us the Crusades, etc etc etc. Religion as a whole has brought WAY more violence and murder upon humanity than Atheism has.

I can't stand this argument. First of all, it wasn't the "belief in nothing" that caused those folks to murder people. It was their belief that they were superior and didn't want to be challenged that led to the murder of millions of people.
However, the Crusades were, literally, religious wars. Scores of people murdered because of no reason other than...religion.

Religious folks need to retire this "atheism causes murder" argument. It's detrimental to your cause, and is so easily proven wrong.

Show me any instance of mass murder/genocide/etc committed by an atheist BECAUSE of the atheist's "religious" beliefs. Any instance.

There are lectures online where Jewish Rabis explain that the "kingdom of God" is actually just a state of being not an actual place.

Someone already mentioned a few, but you are so blinded by your political religion, you missed it!

I like the message. Lets get rid of the ideological fence that causes so much strife.

What if we take small baby steps. Live and let live. Maybe the religious could consider all 'gods' on equal footing to bring peace to this world. Would they be able to change their beliefs enough to love their neighbor instead of condemning them because they don't believe in the same invisible god in the sky?

If the religious truly practiced what they read/believe in, why is there still so much killing in the world by these same religious people? Why can an official religious representative directly contradict the majority of gods out there and say 'go kill in my name'?

I just don't get it. Brainwashing? Faith? Refusal to use cognition?

Eternal conscious torment in Hell should be the first belief to go. I spent two years in research on the subject, and found that it is a made-up lie.

I can't watch videos at the moment. What does Dr. Peterson say?

Also, I'm not talking about political religions. I'm not even sure what that is. I'm talking about actual religions vs. atheism in terms of total violence on humanity due to the beliefs held by each side.

Politics has absolutely nothing to do with that.

But I enjoy a lot of Dr. Peterson's talks, so I would be interested in learning what he had to say about actual religion (not politics because it isn't close to the same thing).

ETA: Oh, I see what you mean. You mean that Raggedyman mentioned several atrocities committed by Atheists. My point was, those atrocities weren't committed because they were atheists. None of them said anything along the lines of "you believe in a god and I don't, so I must kill you all!"
However, the reverse of that has happened countless times throughout history. "godless heathens must be burnt" and all that jazz.
Bottom line, you didn't help the religious cause at all. None of those genocides were due to a lack of religious beliefs. Therefore, Atheism didn't cause those atrocities in any way, shape, or form.

ETA 2: Also, political religion? I'm guessing you assume I'm a Democrat, and it blinded me to the truth, or some such nonsense. I'm definitely not a Democrat, and I hold no allegiance to any political party. A political agnostic, if I were to play along with your phrasing. Good try though.

Duh
Really
Is that right
I never knew

Show me where Jesus or any writing in the Christian scriptures teach war, killing or murder

Atheism causes murder, deaths blah blah because it has and does on a greater "scale" than Christianity has, most religions if not all

The crusades were land grabs and the control of the Silk Road

Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot were just mass murderers and atheists, that's a fact, slaughtered hundreds of millions

Weep in your cornflakes narrator, history proves me right

You think you have a leg to stand on, silly silly boy
