Haha! I would have asked you if I could hold the rat. I can imagine though the looks on other people's faces.

I got mine because my Niece's Husband used to buy them to feed their pet snake. I felt so bad for the poor little things. I love snakes, but big one's should be free. They just don't have cages or living areas that are appropriate for big snakes. Anyway, it was a while since I had any fur babies and I asked if I could buy one of the rats. He ended up giving it to me. It was a comfort to me that at least one had a happy life and natural death.

Maybe you have been playing it for "too long" but you are getting quite good at it.

I visit that thread every once in a while to increase my vocabularity.

And I thought the 30,000 without power last night was something. Over 140,000 now, most in me & Jin's county/metro. I woke up this morning and checked the news, and first thing I asked hubby, who'd already been up since 4am, after getting up to speed on Ice Storm #2's handiwork was a rather redundant "What the hell happened while I was asleep?!" "It got s#y out there, that's what happened while you were asleep. Power flickered a lot, but it's still on, don't complain!"

Yeah, I'm not, it's still on and that Powerball ticket is looking likely this week, lol.

It did some neato ice art, though, like these hollow ice apples (coated rotting ones that thawed and dropped to the ground out the bottoms)

Disclaimer: Not my pictures.

The news article I borrowed the pics from is calling them "Ghost Apples". It couldn't be more fitting, lol.

...That's Irish, not Scottish.

"Lang may yer lum reek"
(I had tae google it!)

Correctamundo! (Irish not Scots)

and... "Lang may yer lum reek" = "Long may your chimney smoke"
it just means that you wish that the person will always have a warm fire in their hearth.

I have an alternative "party" version of that auld Scots saying (for someone you don't like!)
"Lang may yer Rum Leak!"

Jings!
The Stranglers are one of my all-time favourite bands.
That track is the last one on their first album Rattus Norvegicus which is just awesome!
I may have to dig out my old 12" (DDIG) vinyl later!

Hello, Cheerio!

Reminds me of the old Clippie's (the person who used to issue tickets on the buses here) who used to say (if you were out of funds or had no valid ticket to travel...)

"C'mon, Get aff!"

My favourite Scots saying is actually from up north in Aberdeen

They have their own local dialect (called Doric) and instead of foot/feet/shoe they will say "fit". (Ma fit's sair = My Foot's Sore)
But with their heavy accents, they also use "fit" for "whit?" i.e. "what or which?"

This leads to the peculiar situation, that in an Aberdeen shoe store you can hear a customer (when trying on shoes) asking:

"Fit fit fits fit fit?" (Which foot fits (into) which shoe?)

TRUE story that.

PS - They also say "furryboots?" when they mean "Whereabouts?"
e.g. "Furryboots dae ye bide?" = "Whereabouts do you stay?"

Every time I hear that... I can't help but look at their feet! (just in case...)

This is a (fairly tame) funny example of Aberdeen Doric....

Does anyone understand ANY of it? (apart from me!)
