PS, not having grown up in Texas, they don't teach Texas history in every state, I learned it when I lived there in my adult life.

More than half the people that work there are of Hispanic descent and at any given time more than half of the customers in the store are of Hispanic descent.

To assume the described situation at an Albuquerque location is due to Hispanic people being present is a particularly low quality thought process.

Here in Germany if I don't try to speak German most Germans (that don't know me well) will refuse to admit they know English.

They expect me to rightfully make that adjustment while living in their country, so why is it considered Offensive that any American wants English as the official language?

I was told I am racist for wanting English as the official language in the states, but it was not racist for Hispanics to try and make Spanish the official language of Florida.

I dated a Cuban girl for a while, the first time I went to her parents home was the first time I saw racism. Mom and Dad were pissed she was dating a white kid. They refused to speak to me and talked more than a bit of trash about me, and her family and their friends eventually destroyed the relationship.

What they didn't know was while I could not speak Spanish well my understanding of it was quite good, and they were far from flattering in what they were saying.


I guess you lived in the liberal utopia corner of Florida because in the late 80s Tampa area it was very clearly divided between Cuban exiles and the rest of the Hispanics. The Cubans were racist... the Mexicans, the Puerto Ricans were awesome folks to hang out with drink with or date. Every family from the later two groups worked hard to assimilate into America, they wanted their kids to be fluent in English and be American first, Then be proud of your heritage.

So? That's par for the course anywhere, I'd expect to be snubbed speaking English in a foreign country, too. It doesn't mean much beyond just being the area's lingua franca expectation, though, communication is easier with one. It doesn't, however, mean one must abandon their mother tongues entirely just to appease, especially the older one gets. Languages are not easy to learn and retain as we age, I've lost all fluency in Portuguese, Russian and Maltese myself.

Oh who the hell cares, that's just stock racism, not anti-integration. Black communities, Asian communities, Hispanic communities, White communities ALL have elements that pull this crap. Hell, here in MI there's even an old phrase still kicking around -- "If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much." And some of these people are real serious about their kids only marrying Dutch descendants.

Late 80's through the mid 2014, everywhere from Tampa to Port Charlotte. The most fractured and least welcoming area I ever lived in was Sarasota. And it wasn't the Hispanics doing it, it was the wealthy whites snubbing everyone else.

Random side thought..

I was dating a Puerto Rican girl and she invited me home for dinner so of course I said sure. (she was the eldest, but the middle daughter liked me also)

So I walk in the door and get greeted by this big Hispanic lady who immediately hugged me and asked if I liked Fried chicken. I nodded and said yes mam, she immediately corrected me saying I am not a mam, that's my mother.

So we sit down for dinner and as she is serving food she looks at me with a grin and asks are you a leg or breast man, it took me a few moments to answer.. .and I said Leg please. She gave a big ole laugh and said ok that's why you're dating my eldest.

I turned beat red, and was pretty quiet for the rest of dinner, afterwards she game me a big hug and kiss saying I like you, just gotta fatten you up and you will be all right. (I was 6'2" and 139 lbs)

even after we broke up I kept in touch with the family, broke my heart when the mom passed away.

The only stat yanks should be concerned with is when stupid outnumbers sane - all the skin skin colours have stupid and sane - its in the ratios that count. The gene-wars theory of K-selection versus r-selection best explains the overarching human instinct - skin colour, religion, politics all come a distant 2nd.

Does anybody know how much of the current "white" population of Texas was actually originally "Hispanic" back hundreds of years ago and slowly got Anglified? Did it happen much or are pretty much all Texan whites from the outside?

I jest of course.... The majority of hispanics speak English first and foremost and it's spoken fluently. Not to mention, the term 'hispanic' is used fairly loosely these days where even the Census Bureau can't seem to properly define who would be included in this group. The term Hispanic is more a cultural or ancestral identification.... you can be fairly pale and white and still identify as hispanic. With that said, this is a strong indication that there are major demographic shifts happening in red states and these shifts are happening fast. Interesting times.

It doesn't happen like it used to unless you get out on the ranches....but i've seen immigrant kids kept isolated from normal american culture. For several generations.

A great example of this is the Mennonites, who typically speak German unless business requires English or Spanish. They move amongst us as oddities, and do not interact at all without necessity.
