If Donald wants to be able to sit up in his reviewing stand and see all the soldiers salute him as they march by... and see all the tanks and missiles and trucks... why doesn't he pay for the whole thing himself? The added security, police overtime, transportation of all the personnel and hardware, the whole damn thing.

A Military parade is what gets you fiscally conservative. Never mind TARP or Q.E.

Hopefully you apply that budget knife everywhere.

Cool. We can drag out all of our World War II vets like they used to do with Civil War vets. Maybe get the Shriners to drive around in those little cars. Marching bands. Floats. Maybe an NRA float can toss out guns to all the kids along the parade route.

I'm thinking that parades should be reserved for when we've done something really great, like win a war. Or decided to have sex with somebody of the same sex. Or be Irish.

Exactly. It used to king of bug me a little when NASA would shoot some expensive probe somewhere to take pictures of some far-away planet just so we would know what it looked like. What's the point, I would ask. Then I thought about the billions of dollars that just get "lost" in the pockets of some cronies of whoever happens to be in office, and I modified my annoyance to think, "Well, what difference does it make? People get paid. It's a drop in the bucket. At least we get some cool pictures out of the deal."

Times have changed....like they do.

Military parades used to be for 'banana republics,' the Soviets and the Chinese. They were usually associated with Communists and South American left-wing dictatorships. Nationalistic propaganda parades for nations on the wrong side of the power equation.

Just the logistics involved for a DC parade would be such a nightmare and costly. What would the TDY pay add up to for all those soldiers? How many days do the soldiers need to take away from their normal duties and training to practice and arrange for such a spectacle? Does trump want tanks and does he realize DC streets will be severely f'ed up if he does and after just how many underground pipes will need to be replaced?

During and at the end of WW2 we had a lot of parades. Of course, there was the victory parade, but the others were to give the public confidence while sending their sons off to battle on other continents. Afterwords yearly parades didn't catch on and there is probably a real good reason for it.

You can't make this crap up. Here's Pence bashing NK's military parade:

"Make no mistake about it, what we witnessed in Pyongyang, and we witnessed again yesterday, on the eve of the Olympics ... was once again an effort on the part of the regime in Pyongyang to display their ballistic missiles, to display a military that continues to make menacing threats across the region and across the wider world."

But when asked about Donald's idea he has a different take:

"I think any opportunity we have to celebrate the men and women of the armed forces of the United States is a great day," Pence said. "I heartily support the president's call to celebrate our military."

Are they truly that deaf-dumb-and-blind or have they come to learn that the rest of the country is?
