Except - as you would know if you'd followed this thread for the last few pages - this is a falsehood.

One thing this thread has stirred up from my memory is the suggestion that this American contempt (not by all Americans, just particularly noticeable in conservative America) for Sweden hasn't come from nowhere.

Just off the top of my head I remembered that the old myth that Sweden had the world's highest suicide rate was often attributed to Dwight Eisenhower. (Does anyone these days still believe that myth, or even remember it? Growing up, it was generally accepted as incontrovertible that the Swedes were inclined to be gloomy - probably due to the dark nights and too much booze - and were especially predisposed to killing themselves).

Looking into it, I found that Eisenhower's remarks aren't that specific, they mention a 'certain European country' in connection with socialism and suicides, but don't actually name that country.

So why is Eisenhower associated with hating Sweden in the first place? As it turned out, the phrase "Hating Sweden" was my unconscious mind's way of nudging me toward rediscovering something I first read many years ago.

If anyone, American or otherwise, wants a decent insight into the almost visceral hostility that Sweden arouses in some US conservatives, they might like to read the 1989 (short) essay "Hating Sweden" by Christopher Hitchens.

This was written well before Hitchens's descent into alcoholic megalomania, btw, and is completely free of the neocon ravings that characterised the dog-end of his career.

It is also nicely ironic in that Hitchens was praising Sweden and criticising the US in 1989 but - had he lived - would now be damning Sweden for "appeasing Islamofascism" (or somesuch nonsense) and praising Trump's attempted ban on immigration from some Islamic nations instead. In that way, Hitchens was lucky he died when he did, because his contrarian schtick would have become an albatross as big as the Ritz. I doubt he would have been modest enough to find this amusing.

Wait, this can't be...what about the German #NotWithUs March that was a flop because Germans are not really having any issues with their immigrant brothers and sisters. Someone must be lying, I am very confused.

I haven't read the whole thread. I read the op, and a few comments, watched some OTHER videos where Swedish citizens comment about the shame in their government not representing them nor protecting them.

This isn't rocket science. Bring en masse intolerant disrespectful people who are uneducated, don't speak the new country's native language and have no work skills and place in a country of educated, solid work ethics and good will toward all. What could possibly go wrong? Sounds good on paper.

Sweden is changing. The citizens are changing their opinions but it's too late.

Fewer Swedes say they are willing to personally help asylum seekers, and an even smaller share want their government to allow more into the country, according to a recent poll. The survey, carried out by research company Inizio for local newspaper Aftonbladet (link in Swedish), polled Swedes on their view on the refugee crisis in 2015 and again in 2016.

The number of respondents who would “definitely” help asylum seekers has fallen from 54% in 2015 to 30% in 2016. The share of people who said they would refuse to assist asylum seekers almost doubled, from 11% in 2015 to 21% this year.

When asked whether the government should take in more refugees, 31% of Swedes said yes in 2015, around the time when the heartbreaking photo of drowned Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi circulated widely. When asked the same question a year later, only 13% of respondents felt the same way. Their government isn't listening and even polite PC people have backs that can break. It's just a matter of time. The rise of the right-wing Sweden Democrats, Sweden imposing harsher rules for immigration etc, also shows that attitude is changing and despite having goodwill, even the government has admitted they can't take any more.

As for the purported arson incidents at nine refugee centers in Sweden, a 2 November 2015 Reuters article reported that:

When the center housing 14 asylum seekers in a forest clearing went up in flames, the occupants had to escape through a window and shelter in a nearby building. Now they patrol the area in nearly sub-zero temperatures each night, using only the dim lights of mobile phones to peer into the forest for any intruder bent on destroying their temporary home.

The Munkedal blaze was just one of more than a dozen at centers across Sweden in the past month — some confirmed as arson attacks and others suspected as such — that the police are struggling to solve as the country expects to take in up to a record 190,000 asylum seekers this year.

While no one has died in the fires, a sword-wielding masked man killed two people and wounded two others last month in a racist killing spree at a largely immigrant school in Trollhattan, a short drive from Munkedal.
