The romans had segregated public bathrooms.
Not all but some have been segregated.


Anyway, i personally have no problems with unisex bathrooms.
That would be total equality for all and everybody.

The Romans had public facilities with multiple "seats" and the well-appointed had private facilities ... but I'm unaware of sex toilet-differentiation in their culture. Do you have a source?

Public bathrooms and all such facilities should be private. Public shouldn't exclude private. Many issues solved.

The romans had separated public bath houses between men and woman for the most part as it was the norm. Less public ones had their own rules.

To be completely honest, i can't provide a source.

I searched a bit on the topic, it seems the roman toilets have been unisex,
but some bathrooms segregated.

But bathrooms for bathing/swimming not toilets.


And yes I agree with you on the privacy part. In a stall i don't care who does their business in the next stall (smell and noise is the bigger issue than gender :-)

I had the experience with open toilets in China. They are segregated by gender.
Per sex there was one room, just squatting toilets, no walls no means for privacy,
direct eye contact with several people doing their business....
That was a new experience!

I recall a similar experience as a teenager in Brittany, France. It was mid-late 1980s and I went for a pee in the public toilets. Moments later an old woman shambled in and squatted down over the rusty bar that ran above the gulley.

Didn't bother me much beyond being surprised.

With hindsight, it's funny how the French and English are separated by the English Channel. Just a few miles of water and such profoundly different cultural norms. Men and women peeing in the same place would have caused tabloid hysteria in England and yet it wasn't worth raising an eyebrow for the northern French.

I only mention it to raise the possibility that all the recent bathroom-related uproar is down to cultural values rather than malice, evil or 'the end of society' being the intent.
