Gender identities exist. Discussing it in school might make someone, somewhere, sometime have a bit more informed conversation on the subject than we've seen here.

The idea that knowing that different gender identities might make a kid different points to a fundamental ignorance about the way things are.

Thankfully, the attitudes of the public are rapidly changing. Acceptance of different gender identities i.e. accepting people for who they are, is on the rise.

We've seen the same progressive movement in equal rights for more than a century. We have been a mixed economy from the beginning of the United States. The very idea of "public education" was opposed by some, who have an interest in keeping people ignorant.

As you point out, times are changin'. Some people always hate that fact.

Yes, we all know the paranoid reasons for getting rid of public education that passes for reality in the spheres of wingnuttery.

You apparently believe that that parents who wish their children to remain ignorant or who wish to inculcate their kids in backwards superstitions should be allowed to do so. The majority disagrees with you.

However, you do have the option to educate your children as you wish. Public school is not compulsory, hasn't been for about 50 years.

The lines are really starting to blur lately.

This is really a complicated thing, there is so much information and when it is new or unfamiliar, it is confusing or hard to believe. I've made a couple of posts explaining this and one of them can be found here. There's a few videos there of parents with their own transgender children. Basically, when a kid says they ARE a boy or a girl, not that they wish they could be a boy or a girl but they ARE, this is commonly a sign of gender dysphoria, the medical diagnosis for this condition. What clinicians look for is this behavior is expressed consistently, persistently and insistently over time.

I can tell you by five or six, I never had any doubts in my mind that I was not a boy. Think back to when you were that age, wasn't your sense of your own gender pretty well cast in stone? I wasn't confused, except why I had a boy's body and I have never been confused about or questioned who I was. I have also never changed my "gender" or my behavior or my personality and have never known myself as anything other than a girl and then a woman and this goes well beyond my own self perceptions as from my very first day of school, the whole world saw that I was different and never let me forget about it.

Had I been more outwardly a girl during school, who I was as a person would have made so much more sense. I had never been a boy and there was no way in hell I was ever going to grow up to be a man and it didn't take a rocket scientist or some shrink with a piece of paper hanging on their wall to know this. I said earlier that when I graduated high school and my parents started using my proper name and pronouns it was a relief for them. That was in 1973. There was actually some hope then that I would grow up and have a normal life and that's exactly what I did and I've never thought about being any other way. Just as my own sense of knowing what I was at five, that has been consistent and persistent for a lifetime, I do not have any knowledge or memory of ever feeling any different regardless of how hard the outside world tried to make me something I was not.

My parents did every sort of encouragement, programming, cajoling, bribing, shaming and whatever to guide me to be a "normal" boy and nothing changed who I was or made a damn bit of difference except to make me feel bad about myself and a tad obstinate. I began seeing child psychiatrists when I was 10 (1965) which became a regular event throughout my school years. Doctors knew nothing about this back then and my parents had no idea what to do with me because I was out of place and very dysphoric about it. An incident of brutal homophobic violence, because I looked like a girl and acted like a girl, happened my sophomore year of high school which was when my parents began to finally get it but what were they or I going to do about it in 1970? School as well as my body was a living hell and I won't elaborate further on my emotional state or what my life was like. I've done that here plenty in other places. Go through my post history.

In my experience, being born male was a huge mistake and the parts that made me male considered to be a birth defect that I was fortunate enough to have surgically corrected into something wanted and usable. I never knew quite how this was going to happen when I was a kid but I always knew it was going to happen one way or another. I have no explanation why I was born male but grew up to be a girl. It's the stupidest thing I ever heard of if that makes any difference and if this hadn't been my life, I might have a hard time believing it too.

I've shared more of my story because a personal narrative may have a better chance of getting through than links? The people I know and work with in real life do not know of my medical history. I am funny, happy and well liked but I am not "out" about having changed sex and people can't tell by looking even if I were to be butt ass naked swinging from the treetops. When I was young, crazy and living dangerously in my 20's, I even had sex with a few guys that didn't know but when I met my husband when I was 29, he knew and didn't care at all and he was a very rugged manly hetero dude so when people call me "he" because of invisible chromosomes, it just makes me laugh. He, his, him has nothing at all to do with my life and never has. If I called you a SHE, wouldn't you kind of go WTF?

These are common questions of parents with gender variant children. As had been suggested, get professional help, join a support group and talk to other parents, learn everything you can. Join a private forum like the one at Gender Spectrum that helps parents navigate these difficult questions. I would suggest before disciplining a child for gender atypical behavior, you learn some of the better ways of dealing with these things because if you do have a transgender kid, your misguided parenting will leave scars and you really don't want to do that to kids.

When we first put the pieces together when our daughter was 4 and had been asking us for months when her penis would go away, the distinctions between gender non-conforming and transgender were very important to us. We were desperate to try and figure out what we should do, foresee the future and not make a wrong decision. We were asked by other parents if our child was transgender or gender non-conforming and it felt like we had to have a diagnosis to know what the next steps were. I’ve since realized that at the age of 4, when no decisions are permanent, this was unnecessary stress.

No, I don't think inside your little conspiracy box.

I was actually there, in school, in the 1950s. SexEd was basically a health lesson. Girls (boys too) were still naive about sex. It was still something not discussed. Parents didn't talk about it. What we learned, we learned on the playground from other kids. SexEd was definitely not SexEd. There was a need for real SexEd.

Lots of controversy, angry parents, and a school board that wouldn't back down because they knew kids needed it. Just like what's happening today with the transgender issue.

Home Schooling Family Allowed to Stay in US - ABC News
