The problem starts when a fight ends up in a vendetta, resulting in bringing friends, guns etc to the next fight.

Masculinity is also not being afraid to stand up to oppressors, to your boss, to corrupted politicians, to the police, being responsible etc.

Didn't Carlin refer to this as the "pussification" of the American male?

i think it down to people wanting to be tough that aint physically tough.
]kids in poor areas are most likley not receiving love from family and they end up where they feel wanted.
i do put it down to parents and how they interact with kids, if they not bothered about them and just want them out of their way in their bedroom or play outside with friends. Then they are open to many temptations that will give them things they dont have. Money, love and feel part of something.

in terms of guns - i still think guns aint a problem. we all have knifes in our kitchens dont we? do you ever want to go out and stab someone? i doubt it. If you had a gun i assume it would be them same. people who want to use guns to kill will find other tools to kill if they dont have access to guns.

i think fist fights are fine if it has to come to this, at least you live to fight another day and you save money on bullets. If i fight i would never hit people when they are down and give them chance to walk away. no one else would be involved in the fight unless its a disadvantage with numbers

i partial blame social media channels like World Star Hip Hop where people feel obliged to do shocking crazy stuff and upload it.

If you must blame... better to see that its the system itself, not those pointing at the system through artists that are a product of that system. When two parents have to work to support a regular houshold, what about one parent working 40 hours a week and still requires food stamps and assistance to support the family, some single moms are single because of war, accidents, same with some single dads. I have two male friends that fought and got custody of their children because of addictions and using state money for whatever instead of caring for their children like a parent should. Putting life on hold so they are raised right and have opportunity is a part of that gift and a way to be responsible even if they were born out of some irresponsibility.

Of course the economic greed not paying workers properly over working workers not giving health benefits while profit after profit goes to tax havens or basically no taxes that if done right could help bring free healthcare education etc. easily affordable without more taxes once balanced out minus the corrupt btw, many countries are doing this just fine and not in debt due to it.

Another thing often spouted is the whole god guns and country from the people born in the late 30s through to the mid 50s... like they handled ww1 and ww2 add both together less time than this 15 year post 911 war on terrorism business of extremists fighting extremists. Those men and women of the 1900-1930 were strong DIY work ethic people, like my grandparents on both sides... they werent blind believers though they had faith in the human spirit, that generation was the strong generation of the roaring 20s drugs and juke joints, hell coc aine was in coke a cola... the ethic of taking care of ones home and family responsibly oneself as much as one possibly could through know how or learning how almost collapsed the entire stock market... the corporations couldnt compete, socialism was high on everyones mind communities trying to work together.

Then Hitler sprang up hell he was embraced by many was even Time magazines man of the year, of course his ideologies of superiority and training camps of hitler youth and eugenics and past ignorance started leading to ethinc cleansing and his nonsense still holds a sway over people today, of course propaganda lies and says it was the 50s generation those that were born into peace of the baby boom and want it back... that it was god guns and country so they fight to keep that ethic, well who would fight to keep that good socialist aspect at bay? other than those business and corporations back home on the brink of collapse in a hostile take over plan with fortunate sons to build empires, while those left to go fight actually handled the business that needed handling?

Dont be decieved, it was the strong DIY men and women that were self sufficent and strong not those soft god guns and country spouters of rhetoric that grew up in the greatest time of peace this country has ever known, lashing out in fear of their own security trying to relive their childhoods by ruining other childhoods and lives to achieve it.

Want to blow economic bubbles? Well that was a dose of reality people dont see if anyone wasnt aware that, thats the who and how it is and was? «Pop» welcome to the real world... the wars after that have been about corporate advancement and economic control of other countries people and resources, meaning nothing to brag about or be proud of.

You are totally right OP. I used to be LE and when I would come across a call involving an evenly matched, equally participated in fight (males or females) I would just write both parties a 'mutual combat' ticket. Class C, falls under 'disturbing the peace'. No big deal. Sometimes you have to work out your differences the old fashioned way. Everyone in 'civilized society' wants to believe we're evolved and physical confrontation is a thing of the past....but, we're all still animals at heart.

People complain about cops having to use force...guess what, that's all some people understand. It's like one dog asserting dominance over another. It's only after the alpha has physically proven its superiority that the beta behaves respectfully.

Same thing with spanking kids. Bleeding hearts throw out this "I would be charged with assault if I hit an adult, but it's ok to hit a kid?" Wah wah wah. In the animal kingdom if a cub gets too rowdy the mama lion bops the crap out of it...problem solved. The cub is not injured, respect is earned. On my kids I use the 1,2,3 spank technique and it works like a charm. My hard headed son just turned 2 in February and is already trained. I pretty much don't even have to spank anymore. I get to '2' and he's jumping to it. I've never injured him and he knows who's the boss.

So I've been wondering lately about culture and masculibity.

Unless you are inventing a new word (which is cool with me)...It is spelled "masculinity"? Not the spelling police, but if the word is your entire topic...

As for the rest?

Denying testosterone? Not healthy..

Encouraging violence as means to settle arguments or get what you want? Not healthy..

Martial Arts, Boxing, Competitive Sports...all great ways to teach discipline, encourage competition and discover a competitive outlet for your physical energy...without anyone getting hit upside the head with a brick.

It also depends on age. In grade school scraps the physical parameters are different than grown men. Just basic physics around mass and force.

It is not so unusual in the case of grown men for the random punch or kick to land oddly and permanently damage or kills someone. I knew a kid in college years back who kicked another guy in the head during a bar fight and killed him. He spent a couple years in jail.

Not saying fighting is never an option...but as men...you have to really raise the bar on what justifies taking the risks of permanently damaging or unintentionally killing someone.

I think men need to be tested, we need physical activity, competition especially in the younger years. It helps shape us going forward, and in most cases teaches us how to deal with adversity... and I mean actually deal with it, not run to a "safe space" BS.

Why do you think that only men should have these experiences? Do you not think women should also learn how to deal with adversity and learn how to be competitive in their "younger years"?

He didn't say that. The topic is emasculation of men, so why would he mention women when responding to it?

But I get it. You are feminazi who goes looking for "male chauvinism"and "oppression" everywhere to reaffirm your "victim" status.

Miserable bunch.

Yes..it is great to teach young girls competitiveness, adversity and discipline in their youth, but young boys in particular are acclimating to a new chemical ..testosterone...which at one point in evolution was meant to drive the male to beat other dangerous things to death. Highly physical sports are a reasonable outlet while they learn to acclimate to that new hormone/chemical...until their executive function manages to wrestle it back under control. It's not an equality debate..it's a biological one..doesn't make one sex greater or lessor...boys have different biology than girls.

Wow, I see I made you upset. Perhaps we should fist fight to solve our disagreement. Whoever is physically stronger wins the argument, right?

men are physically and mentally competitive. this can manifest in physical confrontation of course. Normally though, the accepted civil outlet is sports and games.

When someone disagrees with someone else, a caveman way of doing things would be to beat someone into submission or death. Obviously you understand why society would be made of fail if this was the standard way of doing things now. Besides, we are humans. We are on top of the food chain not because we beat things well, but because we solve problems and dilemmas with mental agility. physical altercations are a animalistic way to solve things, and we can choose to be a dumb chimp, or a clever human.

join a boxing club if fighting is a desire to release aggression, or take up rock climbing, etc..find a physical release (healthy anyhow doing a sport). But no..fighting people who disagree with you is actually stepping away from what uniquely it means to be human.

Let's take for instance a community of poor people. Kids are taught violence is wrong their entire life but in these same communities we have the biggest problems of violence.

Felt like weighing in on this specifically.
Its the opposite. in poor neighborhoods, you will find a pretty nasty raising culture. dont be a p00sy, dont let anyone disrespect you, dont let authority push you around, dont try to be all fancy with words, dont walk away when someone insults you, etc...
And as a result, you have ongoing gang warfare, prison culture (fun fact: all the traits in a poor community is the same in a standard prison, with no percieved disrespect or even looking at someone wrong can go unchallenged without consequences of mocking and even attacking those they deem weak).

violence begets violence. bible is pretty dead on here.

Go walk around in the poor area of town and step out of line, or just look different. you will quickly re-evaluate your views on how they are taught to not fight.

Now, go to some gated white bread community where there is that taught. you will be able to do pretty much anything you want, pee on neighbors cars and all sorts..they may call the cops at best (unless Zimmerman is around). You will also then note the outcome. the gated community of pacifists..have tons of stuff, not many people with a prison history, long life, etc.

Stop playing the victim card, its annoying. Time to grow out of it, be a proud woman, and let men be what men are, even if it hurts your feelings.

I dont think any of us have escaped it. A lot of men, myself included feel at odds with the world and are confused by it these days. The values we were raised with and the principles we were taught are no longer deemed valid or are viewed as throwbacks to a less enlightened age. I do think there's a sense of powerlessness within that if I'm honest.

How do the men feel about this commercial ? As a woman I must say I find it odd, is the implication that this dude is having a "moment" dressing up like a girl ? I can't imagine my Dad ever doing this, lol, and he's liberal for the most part ! He played wrestling, boxing and karate games with my sister and I....we loved it !

it is just role-models that are imprinted in our way to think- nothing special about a man dressing like a woman or the other way around. we are a playful bunch and thats it.
in the video the children had a natural reaction: sympathy.
