It would allow us to discuss things we can't discuss otherwise.

No. T&C is supreme in all matters.

There's no way around that?

That's a good point. It's a good point because I still have no idea what WATS actually is. I know what it stands for, but not what it actually is.

How can you afford to live with an "unlimited" schedule?

Just curious.

Below is a survey asking for your price point tolerance for a monthly subscription model. Keep in mind that if we can get into the zone of $5/month, it may make it worthwhile.

Really...?
5$/month MAY make it worthwhile?

Such is the worth of the average ad loading member? That is not bad at all! Congratulations on that - that is just a couple of bucks shy of what Netlix needs to turn a healthy profit in spite of insane bandwidth usage and licencing fees. And their shares just SOARED.

You guys should go public!

Not actually relevant, in this case.

"Free speech" in regards to not having to pay to take part in certain discussions
Free as in cost free to those unable to pay

Oh.

In that case, how much do you pay your ISP? Your phone carrier?

Oh, wait. You mean like the "open internet" concept? Net neutrality? Where everyone has equal access to the resource?

I could give you all my present financial details to show my income and outgoings but why should I embarrass myself to prove the point I am unable to pay

I think you're missing my point. I'm agreeing with you.

But SO doesn't seem to be talking about a paid, tiered "membership". Yet.

Don't forget guys - it's not going to be compulsory.

If you don't pay you won't have your head cut off or internet disconnected... You'll just see a few adverts.

Fair enough ... Apologies ... I realise I am being defensive and missing your point ...

A dedicated forum for paying members was suggested as an idea by SO however
I reacted to that suggestion is all

I think those who wish an AD free ATS and are willing to pay for it is a Good idea however
It gives the user a choice

im on disability so can't afford luxuries like subscriptions have had to cancel Netflix and Spotify already so doubt I will be subscribing to anything else. Nevermind. Just a sign of the times I guess.

I guess I would be ok with dropping $60 for a year. For whatever reason I am not getting ads, I do on my phone though so would that cross over?

An issue I could see arising would be during a good "ask me anything" I know its hard for the guest to answer everything and everybody but I can assure you somebody will say "I am a subscriber, answer my question dammitt"

So 5 bucks a month I can live with, as long as we can buy a year at a time

With regards to Netflix et al - may I suggest a Raspberry Pi? If you need a hand setting one up PM me.

The way I see it, the vast majority of material on ATS is either sourced from other news outlets or user-generated content. And I'm not really a fan of the few things that are original content from ATS (just my opinion, I know).

I know the charge would be for hosting this ad-free but it just doesn't seem worth it to me, to be honest. On the other hand, if there was simply a donate button and we could choose what we want to pay for an ad-free experience, I could see people having an easier time chipping in when they can. In the end, you'd still be coming out on top, and I'm sure some people would be willing to pay much more than others.

I don't see ads anyway. After reading through this entire thread, there is too much speculation and I believe misinterpretation of how a paid system would work. For us to truly judge what we would be willing to pay, we need to see all that it would include, all the perks you have thrown out there for discussion. Not just an ad free experience, because for some of us that is already free. When the site can come up with a package deal...let us know and decide then what it's worth to us.

I don't think having to pay will bring in more members.

That was my point exactly - they would lose at least 70% of the members here, maybe many more.
Is it financially viable to have a small core of paying members or better to keep it as it now where you have many, many more members but keep the ads?
It's something that the owners need to decide because it will ultimately make or break ATS.
This could be the beginning of the end.

I'm not trying to sound dramatic that is just the reality of the situation.

Yes.
But, apparently, that may change. Unless, of course...

For me the 5 a month is the sweet spot, 10 is a bit to much, not that it breaks my economy but there would need to be a lot of quality for that price, and it's hard to determine quality, just to get free of ads to that price is silly.
