They were defeated by dirt farming in reds in Afghanistan less than 3 decades ago...and their government subsequently collapsed and a coup was launch(albeit unsuccessfully).

Russia was there for nine years and Afghanistan had help from America. We have been there for longer and who is helping Afghanistan now?

We beat that same foe in a couple of months....spare me your glorification of Russia.

Couple of months what planet are you on? Try 13 years War in Afghanistan (2001–14). And what is this glorification of Russia crap coming from face it you were wrong about their military.

Communism is a pathetic ethos and its tenants sound like the ramblings of an east Texas beauty contestant... The most ironic part of communism is that pseudo-intellects have constructed an algorithm in their brains whose sum equates to paradise....(homonym puns all over the place)

Talk about being ignorant of history. Russia is not communist it's a capitalist system now.

Anyhow, Russia and its populace(mostly due to 1st trimester fetal alcohol exposure) is a dying star long since bereft of societal intellectual prowess....let alone military prowess.

Got any links to back up this ignorant statement.

I agree Buster
A naive statement. Took me 3.5mins to educate myself on this.

Bottom line is Russia's economy is as dependant on oil now as the Saudi's. Russia has imprisoned, squeezed, shaken-down and outright murdered +Seize funds of every foreign investor or successful non-corrupt capitalist and has no one left to steal from. That leaves oil as their remaining source of revenue...and with oil prices low (Saudi's keeping production high to drive down the price) Russia has been tanking quickly. Putin needs the Saudi to cut back on production and drive prices back up for Russia to survive.

Now...the Saudi's have been shipping cheap oil/increasing production for a few reasons..hurt competitors in the middle east AND squash new US Oil ventures that are only doable/profitable when the price is high. Many new US oil companies got hammered and investors fled when oil dropped. The Saudi's wanted to pound the new technology/expensive US Domestic Oil industry and they did...

So what we have is Putin getting the Saudi's to jack prices back up..happy days for Russia..Some, not all us oil investors will start running the rigs that are only profitable with higher prices...gas goes up for US citizens...our economy feels it.

Honestly the best solution is a sprint investment...like mission to the moon...except in alternative energy and super-high gas efficiency...We need to break oil addiction...Stop being at the mercy of the whims of desert tribes..We don't need to play in the middle east anymore, let that be Putin's nightmare...at best, even if he wins the middle east what does he win? Bombs exploding in Moscow and Al-Qaida et al declaring him a great Satan?...Lets give him the middle east and get the eff out...It will be an expensive and messy spasm, but the technology is doable and scalable...100 miles per gallon for pick-up trucks and a second investment in alternative energy...short term? Big investment...but being able to tell every middle eastern government, dictator and old world king to eff-off and fend for themselves or go to bed with putin? Priceless..

The tide has already turned. US investment in self sustaining energy is massive. All this energy investment has paid off as we are just beginning to see costs coming near the oil production costs. When the new technology becomes cheaper to produce than the old technology then obviously there will be a shift. There's more money to be made in the new technology and that's the game changer. Oil production costs can only go so low so it is just a matter of time before new technology comes along and the US exits the oil market. I can't imagine what that will be like. US oil prices could be manipulated however we like and we could undersell any major oil producing country who wants to cause trouble. In developing countries like Russia who will continue to rely on their massive oil resources, they will feel the hurt. Russia has no reason to invest in self sustaining energy when it has as much oil as its people will ever need and this will be their downfall.

A lot of that is speculation by me, but some of that is just plain and simple economics.

Russia steals Crimea from the Ukraine

Crimea voted to rejoin Russia they didn't steal it.

In an illegal, heavily regulated "Russian" election after an occupation. Crimean Tatars boycotted the vote. Russia sent more troops than allowed, and the troops were SUPPOSED to be confined to their naval base by treaty. It was absolutely illegal and an occupation, leading to a corrupt annexation which Putin later admitted was pre-planned.

Nice try.

Yes. Everyone is pining to go to Russian universities. Lowest amount of money spent per student. Way to invest in your people. They must hand out PhDs to people who make it all the way through Anna Karenina.

You do know that the Russians had a naval fleet base there right? Let's see some links backing up your statements.

Russia like America are the leaders when it comes to new weapons tech not to mention some of the best training available.

Haha, what? What, exactly, are Russia a leader in?

Best training? No, they don't. Their regular soldier training is substandard.

Yes, they did steal it. The vote was widely touted as a farce and Russia herself let slip the vote was rigged.

In Obama's recent interview on 60 minutes he was playing the rationale card. Putin is desperate and desperate leaders do things that others think irrational, but are totally logical to the instigator.

Putin has been testing the United States reactions under Obama's leadership and he has gotten the information he needed. That Obama is fooled by his own inability to see that economics and sanctions only matter to countries who care about that sort of thing. Russia does illegal things and knows how to survive under harsh circumstances, what Obama doesn't seem to understand is that military power and control provides these dictator like leaders all they need to accomplish what they want.

The same reason a thief only cares about getting away with a crime, not the possible prosecution if caught.
