Although I do not wish to alarm you over much, I should state that in my view, the best thing to do would be to consult a medical professional if you find yourself unable to climb down and sleep. This kind of insomnia can be the result of neurochemical imbalances which themselves can be indicators of other, sometimes serious neurophysical, or sometimes glandular problems in the offing, so it is really worth getting some professional advice about the situation, rather than just soldiering on.

Are you allergic to medical professionals?
Just curious! I hope you get some sleep soon though!

KL, how much exercise and activity do you get throughout a normal day?

I set up habits even down to what lights to leave on and what sounds to have in my sleeping environment. There is an enormous amount of "stuff" in a method like this, but have you tried an extensive overhaul of your daily habits in order to stabilize the sleep habit?
