Well I guess I don't understand then..

he said linking photo's.. and if I have something I did in a contest, and I link to that photo.. then SO is saying it takes extra bandwidth to link the URL of the image????

So I wanted to know if it was only the link that caused extra bandwidth to be used, then are we supposed to stop linking even to threads .. because I cannot see how if it is bandwidth we are worried about, and linking to something here (in this case it was specified as photos) that it would not effect all manner of linking as far as bandwidth goes..

But you are talking about mirror something or other, and this I don't understand..

But SO is saying this takes up so much bandwidth to link to something we uploaded and post here... I don't get it.

That works for me. Like most who posted here, I only expect the images uploaded to ATS to show up on ATS.

Seems odd that your stats showed so much bandwidth for your images showing up on other sites but almost nobody posting here suggests they expect them to do that.

I didn't know people could use the upload for other websites, I only use yours here.

Exactly, that is what I thought. But I did see a poster on Graham Hancock's forum that linked to things from ATS, so I asked them if they knew me from ATS, I didn't give them my username here, but somehow they knew my first name.

That was strange to me, that someone I kind of realized they come to ATS from the way they write, would say they don't recognize me from here and then use my first name.

I would never link photos from here, that would be a violation I would think. And I thought the code used here was in-house.

Hiya again B,

If you're just direct linking to ATS content to show people your ATS content then its certainly not anything you have to be concerned about.

Have a read of this page about inline linking and it should answer some of your questions.

No issues with the image thing at all....I don't link them to other sites from here.

Question.....is this a dedicated ATS server or shared?

I'm still confused, but I'll take your word for it.

I used the upload section here maybe 5 times in the past many many years of being a member here to host a picture for a "kingdom banner" in a web based game called utopia. Now i'm not sure if it actually hosts it, or if utopia actually takes that image file and uploads it to it's own servers. I think it does just grab it and host it itself.

It was just handy to upload it.

If it's costing you guys lots of money then certainly disallow the practice.

I've only linked to posts, not pictures on this profile. I don't recall ever linking to pictures on my old (read: forgotten) profile either.

I just upload what I want to upload to ATS. So yeah I say definitely do whatever is best for ATS!

I'm just curious as to what improvements are to be made, besides the hardware? Cause we aren't going to notice the new big "Hammer o Thor" that will be gracing somebodies home here on the communities end.

We've lost a lot at this forum over the past six months to a year or so. Cool emoticons, ATS Live, ATS Chat, and now we are nixing our personal picture bins.

What is coming, that the community is going to notice and use and see, that's an improvement?

Speed is coming. And I highly doubt the new server will be in anyone's "home".....unless they have a nice chilly room, a really fat fiber pipe, and the know how to set it up.....it will likely be in a datacenter somewhere.

photobucket & imageshack exist for a reason.

ATS is not one of these sites. I say trash it

We've always been on multiple dedicated servers. ATS hasn't been on shared hosting since 2003.

I agree that you should do whatever is best for the site. By all means, save money in order to improve/streamline service.

That has not been proposed.

As long as you keep the uploads onsite i think its a good idea.

there's nothing worse than browsing a forum that uses external hosting only to find the picures all deleted.

Any chance you can simplyfy the process for uploading though, Mrsnonspecific drives me mad asking how to do it everytime he wants to upload a picture or youtube vid.
