Only pictures I upload on ATS stays on ATS so no to your questions. I would like a way to upload pictures directly to posts on the new boards if that will be possible without much cost. Glad to hear that you are doing well in regards to the loans. Looking forward to ATS 2.0!

Only use upload for ATS use. Would not mind a cap limit on allowed storage size.

I find the actual implementation working and responding fast enough. Why fix something that ain't broken?

Thanks for keeping this website awesome. I know that you put a lot of work into it.
As for posting pics, I only post pics here. No problem.

Are any of you using your upload service here as a means for image-sharing on other websites?

I can never figure out how to find the upload service on ATS to upload an image for use on ATS on the few occasions I am inclined to do so. Why would I ever come to the conclusion that it was the best option for other sites?

And if so, would it kill you if we stopped?

Nope. Don't worry about me in that regard.

I’ve gone thru a number of full-blown system migration projects lasting 1 or more years each to complete, mostly as a software specialist writing a lot of translation code, ensuring the integrity and completeness of the incoming data, putting in countless 16+ hour days to meet deadlines, reviewing/modifying procedural methods, and cleaning up/leaving behind a LOT of garbage on the old system. That last part often requires a judgement call; while it’s always a good idea to start-out with a clean slate, you don’t want to throw out the baby with the bath water. The reason I even mention this, SkepticOverlord, is that your question put a big smile on my face after reading it. I’ve gotta say, that was by far the nicest, most friendly request for user input/advice I’ve ever seen. I guess it was the, “...would it kill you...” part. I love it!!

In this case, however, you really shouldn’t have to even ask us if we’re sharing ATS images with other sites. It would be plenty considerate of you to simply issue a statement at some point informing us that image-sharing will not be allowed on the new platform due to bandwidth and cost considerations. If some of us find that to be a problem, well, I guess life’s a bitch. It’s not your responsibility to sponsor our slide shows...

I look forward to seeing the new implementation. You have a pretty good grasp of this community and what it likes already, and I’m confident you’ll do a standup job. Break a leg - You’ve got your work cutout!

SO, I have linked images many times.

I did not realize the cost to ATS, I will discontinue doing so.

40%.... Just damn man, my apologies!!!!

Half is a lot when running a business on margins, for a service you dont have to provide.

We have been taking you guys to the cleaners here.

I wish you had told us sooner.

I think of ATS as news entertainment and public services.

This place is my online family!!!

I will never do this again!!!

I know you don't want to be a hardass here, but why not just deny this service since the cost is so great?

I understand we share a great many Images here, thus making them very useful on other forums but damn man....

We have been cutting you guys in half here.

Maybe a monthly limit would be the best way to go, but I am nobody.

You guys make this place work, you know what you need better than I.

Whatever makes ATS more efficient to run is fine with me. I never link images from ATS. Are most of the images you store mainly images that are used for posts here? Would we lose seeing old threads images? Just wondering. If people are using you to basically store images that's not right.

i actually prefer to upload my images to OTHER sites like imgur for example, i used to then embed them into my posts that way, but you stopped providing that function, im now only able to imbed images in my posts here if i upload them here,

i suppose this has gotten you more content doing this, however now your seeing the back end of that decision, more bandwidth needed.

allow us again to embed images that are uploaded to other sites, and your bandwidth usage i would expect to go down atleast a little

I only use the image upload for this site.

I'd use another site to upload here with no problem(as addressed above).

Not really, that Genie has a long legacy of content.

Since there's not that many people using the images elsewhere, we're going to keep everything the same, except that if the image is used on sites other than ATS, it just won't show up any more.

The new hardware has just been made available. The next steps are a long-list of customizations before we begin moving the content. We may even end up needing an additional server as a database transition so we don't over-tax the existing database server while obtaining a copy of its 90 gigabytes. That's right, the raw data of ATS is 90 gigabytes.

I'm shocked you've allowed it. I wouldn't if I were you. You've been far too generous as it is letting us upload the ones we have.

Unless the image linking is bringing you more traffic with newcomers, it might be beneficial to keep it that way.

Small indeed. Do you want me to hold one of your backup here on my personal server?

A RAID 6 system made using just 6 hard disks. Two drive fault at same time is no problem!

I guess nevermind since you already said what you are doing.

I just now saw the thread though.. and I do occasionally do it for photo's that I have uploaded here and used here already... didn't know it would be a problem since they are uploaded here and used here anyway..

Are we having to transfer all our pictures off site now?

Also, my photobucket is in my real name, and I don't like linking to photobucket here for that reason...

Also, just a curiosity point, how does linking to the thread a photo is in take up less bandwidth than linking directly to the photo? Are you wanting us to stop any kind of linking to ATS also?

I ask because when I create something I am especially proud of I have linked it in the past.

Most sites I frequent don't allow images to be used off-site, so if it will help ATS, then I don't think we should either. There are all sorts of free websites specifically for image hosting that people can use if they need to. ATS shouldn't be one of them.

Edit: yeah....I guess I was a bit late to this party lol.

I don't think thats the case at all.

SO would have to clarify but I imagine its targeted at mirror sites, blogs, and those sorts of things that don't direct back to ATS at all. It's kind of creepy but there are actually piles of websites that rip off forum content etc for various reasons. I'd be curious how many of those are causing this on ATS.

Lots of websites prevent this type of linking.
