and now we are nixing our personal picture bins.

That has not been proposed.

Okay.

Gotcha. Thanks for the added info and explanation.

As long as you keep the uploads onsite i think its a good idea.

there's nothing worse than browsing a forum that uses external hosting only to find the picures all deleted.

Any chance you can simplyfy the process for uploading though, Mrsnonspecific drives me mad asking how to do it everytime he wants to upload a picture or youtube vid.

Good point. Also, perhaps, modify the code so it takes .jpegs. I can't modify file extensions on my phone. ATS doesn't let me upload this file extension. I suspect there are others out there as well.

Something has.. and it involves in some way our pictures..

we cannot link our pictures anymore because its takes up too much room on your servers.. unless of course we are linking our pictures.. because you are upgrading the site and have more room now....

which okay,.. is supposed to make sense..

what I see, is you are changing the site again.. so protect your pictures from it. Cause it involves our pictures..

and yes, I am this stupid.. because this is all the sense it makes to me.. so that is my conclusion

The pictures you've uploaded and you use in your threads, posts, and profile here on ATS won't change or be affected at all.

The only thing that will change is if you are linking to them on other sites, i.e. Facebook or your blog, etc... They will no longer get served to other sites.

So if I do work on ATS and am proud of it and want to share it with someone I cannot link them to ATS anymore..

even though most of the stuff I do has ATS all over it..

Except for KangarooEx4U's avatar.. which is now for sale on photobucket.. lol..

No such thing was proposed or suggested. Storage space for uploaded images is not and never has been an issue.

The issue is the increasing cost of bandwidth, some of which is from a rapid rise in the number of ATS-hosted images being used on other non-ATS websites.

The cheapest enterprise-level solution we can find (which is only about 75% cheaper than what we're using now), costs an average of $0.094 per gigabyte of bandwidth. We've peaked at over 20 terabytes in recent months, costing nearly $2,000 (when factoring in the base maintenance fees). 40% of that bandwidth comes from other sites using the images, by blocking that, we can save nearly $900 per month.

Side-note: there are cheaper solutions, but the scale and performance of their operation wouldn't support a global site like ATS very well.

Of course you can give a friend a link to ATS to see your picture, but, if you put the image on ANOTHER SITE via a link it won't appear because it's costing us too much money to serve the images to OTHER SITES.

Your friend will have to come here to see it.

Are any of you using your upload service here as a means for image-sharing on other websites? And if so, would it kill you if we stopped?

I have never done that for the very reasons you point out. It's been my experience over the years that's it's considered bad policy and an abuse of the given forum unless specific permission has been granted. So I'd be fine.

The "Geek" in me is lovin' thinking about Thor's Hammer on the one hand and thanking my lucky stars that I'm not the IT go-to guy on the other! Should be an interesting experience and all the hard work and headaches will be appreciated.

Does not affect me. I only upload images for content in posts or threads I create, and feel that your image library should never have offsite links that are outside of the scope of ATS. Those threads and posts that do not upload to the library, and instead use graphics linked in from other sources/sites all suffer continuous deterioration, to the point of not being viable any more as their graphic content become orphaned, so... enforcing a sourced library is good for ATS in the long run anyway.

i actually prefer to upload my images to OTHER sites like imgur for example, i used to then embed them into my posts that way, but you stopped providing that function, im now only able to imbed images in my posts here if i upload them here,

i suppose this has gotten you more content doing this, however now your seeing the back end of that decision, more bandwidth needed.

allow us again to embed images that are uploaded to other sites, and your bandwidth usage i would expect to go down atleast a little

ACTUALLY... you can go to imgur and make a meme then get the code to display the picture here. OR just upload them and MANUALLY add thes following around it address. [img] [ /img]. Note the last tag i spaced so it will display as text.

A few years ago I went through my images I had saved here and deleted a bunch I had no intention of using again. I then discovered they had also disappeared from the threads they had been posted in, which led to clunky nonsensical threads that are no longer coherent without the pictures.

Yeah, when you delete an uploaded pic from your uploads on ATS, it will delete that picture from anyplace you posted it on the site.. and even other sites IF you linked them from ATS's url (database).
Best not to delete any uploads that you've posted unless you're certain that it won't be needed elsewhere on the site, because any upload will be deleted everywhere else they are posted.

It's nice of you to ask, and for the heads up, but since ATS is not an image hosting site it shouldn't really bother anyone.

Nope no problem for me!

So long as i can still use my uploaded pictures on ATS i really could not care less.

Can I also say that its really nice to have ATS owners seeking out the views of members on this kind of thing, not the first time that you guys have done this either. I wish more web forums would take heed from your example, as a member i really appreciate it!

Ooops, sorry! I have used the ATS image storage to populate the icons of my conspiracy timeline at tikitoki.com

Realistically, nobody is ever going to click on my timeline unless I gave them the exact link. The icon files were all pretty low bandwidth. The only person ever to use that timeline is probably ME! And I only used it as reference material.

When ATS makes the transition to stop serving images it probably won't break my timeline.

Do you think that A.I. bots are generating all this traffic for you?

I only socialize on ATS and upload here (I created an account on twit a while back as support for ATS as requested) but only visit there when I hit the side over there --->

Anyway, just my 2c but glad to see the upgrades are in the wings.

BTW, Bills OP reads like such technobabble to me, may as well be speaking Sumerian cuniform with clicking sounds.

Cheers.
