Just saw the 5.5.

I think everyone should be prepared.

It appears that the Leavenworth, WA detector I have been monitoring today was just going off as an anomaly to the software upgrade they just completed. All looks normal now. Sorry for the excitement.

Hopefully the 5.5 this morning is all we will see for a while.

Stay Safe!

Well, they put back the old version of GEE. It's exasperating! Now, I'm back to seeing the Leavenworth, WA monitor topping the scales near 40 again. Is this the new normal for Leavenworth, WA or is there something causing this?

Earlier today, it successfully displayed the 5.5 earthquake that happened offshore.

Here's another perplexing mystery about the monitor in Leavenworth, WA. If the high readings were the new normal, then they should stay up and only go higher for an event. However, there was just a drop to the regular level and then a subsequent increase to the high level again, so I have to conclude that the monitor is functioning correctly and there is something going on in the area.

Thoughts?

Hey Olivine, you still around? What's up with the slip tremors on the west coast? Where are we in the 14 month cycle? Hope you're well.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUZZY.

I hope your day has/or will be a fun day for you.

It's still the 24th here.

Have you ever had Bacon Cake? I actually made one about a year ago, it was ok. I don't think the recipe I used was that great. I hear it's the BOMB, if it's made correctly.

Anything with bacon has to be good.

I have been doing some graphs for Japan for a few days, but found them a bit boring. I used the template for doing the big aftershock sequences.
So I got my (digital) paintbrush out.
See what you think. The colours almost match my icons colour set.
Without the lines you might need a ruler to line up the dots with the axis, but I think it gives a general overview of the days events cold to hot/small to big

original

new style

funnily enough as a gif image the coloured one is smaller size, plain one is 59kb, coloured one is 50.8, so it must be the axis lines that are the difference.
rightclickviewimageforfullsizes,
they are 746pixels wide, to fit my blog pages without shrinking (like here on ATS

all networks should adopt this colour scheme for earthquake size, IMO

Quite a high number of quakes for Japan 23/09/2015 UTC, 237 above M1.0 about double the normal daily output. But thats not all, there were 414 quakes all up incl those below M1.0.
Two swarms contributed;
Swarm at Kokonoe, Kusu District, Oita Prefecture, Japan, shown on my daily maps and graph as NE KUMAMOTO PREF
West of Kuju volcano, so likely volcanic in nature.
Two geothermal power plants are in operation at Kuju.
Close to Sujiyu Hot Springs, also nearby are Yutsubo Hot Springs and Chojabaru Hot Springs
Bing interactive map
39 small quakes basically all within an hour and twenty two minutes, 24/09/2015 07:09:16 to 08:31:19 JST
mag~1= 23, mag1=14, mag2=2
the two M2's were in the middle of the swarm timewise.

and another swarm off Yilan, Taiwan, shown on my maps as NW OFF ISHIGAKIJIMA IS
31 events, mag1=20, mag2=10, mag3=1
Bing interactive map
spread out over a longer timeline 13:05:24hrs 23/09/2015 16:34:14 to 24/09/2015 05:39:37 JST
the M3.1 was near the end of the run, the 28th event, at 24/09/2015 04:20:01

you can see the NE KUMAMOTO PREF swarm on the new daily graph for 23UTC

Phew that was a close call, at the end of the last post I was about to say " I don't think there will be any more M6's"
but thought better of it .......

I'm just looking over the 2010 M8.8
quite different, no M7's and less M6's than this one.

Chile more .........
Comparing 2010 with 2014 and 2015.
The one thing that sticks out to me is the aftershocks of the 2010 8.8Mw were mostly to the north of the 8.8 mainshock, off Liberator O'Higgins, towards where this 2015 8.4 series ends (south), in fact they overlap.
Did the 8.8 "trigger" the 8.4?, one would tend to think so, but the new question is "how does the 2014 Tarapaca 8.2 fit in?, it was way north of these two.
I'll have to read TrueAmerican's thread about that again. That was a strange one, 14 days of M6's (which turned out to be foreshocks) then the M8.2 (and aftershocks).
If you take the 2014 M8.2 in isolation (without the M6 foreshocks) the aftershock's where at a lower level, perhaps because a lot of energy was already released before the 8.2 (by the M6 foreshocks).

compare table with numbers

3 timeline graphs (all 7 days from the main events)

I put those together as an animation ....offsite here........ interesting, the 8.4 looks more like the 8.8 than it does to the 8.2. But then again none of them really look the same.

I did some maps while I was at it, pretty self explanatory, colors of the icons match the graphs
Taracapa 2014 (Teal)

2010 Maule (blue) and 2015 Coquimbo(red)

Its a bit of a pain Bing will only show 200 markers, so my M8+ map is at capacity, last one that fitted in the 200 limit was Rat Islands M8.0 of 23/6/2014. But before someone asks about the "gap" in Chile i.e. Atacama and Antofagasta, you can see on the M8+ interactive mapthere has already been some M8's there before, in 1819, 1922 and 1995

*Note to self, split the M8+ map into two maps, to be able to show more recent and future events.

Thank you for your interest, I do this stuff because "I want to know" myself and it never ends, finding the answers to one question always leads to more new questions.

New question, are all these Chile M8's just aftershocks of the 1960 ARAUCANIA M9.5 ? I mean that's a MASSIVE earthquake, and there is only one other M8 south of that, in LOS RIOS, a M8.0 in 1837.

i had special and weird dreams about earthquakes the last couple of days. Strange

Won't share it in the dreams&Predictions section as people will call me crazy or insane or say things like 'why do you think YOUR dreams matter' lol

But honestly you have been warned! Keep in mind i'm a guy that is interested in a lot of different things in life so i'm not that often thinking about Doom especially not when I'm relaxed and go to sleep...
