Could it be from all the ice breaking expeditions currently going on?

Not in that area, you have to go a lot farther north.
That area is ice free this time of the year.

This is a part of the Aleutian trench, and the quakes are deep so not ice.

It could just be part of the plate slid and caused some smaller quakes,
or it could be a lead up to something much larger.

Or maybe an underwater volcano we don't know about yet.
Lots of possibilities.

Certainly worth keeping an eye on though.

no, at that distance it would have to be 7.6 or bigger,
and I'd have to be awake, sitting, and it be dead quiet
none of the above applied in this case except dead quiet

there is one little thing i wanted to write in this thread.

I've had weird headaches that came out of nowhere a day or days before more significant earthquakes. I can't explain to myself why that is but it always felt like it 'isn't normal' as if I can feel the outside 'pressure'. I'm very sensitive to odors or weather.

but today I feel the same way... I wouldn't be surprised if theres a 6.0-7.0+ quake soon. who knows.

I haven't checked USGS. but they will probably do theirs at the 7 day mark, so no one notices.
The map below might only be of interest to the earthquake network surfers, it shows the event locations of the 3 networks geonet, geofon and emsc locations, they are in time order.
Its messy.
interactive map
best viewed in Birdseye or Aerial (same thing) so you know where the area is in relation to NZ and Raoul island.
Did Geonet get the first one (the others 6ish) way wrong?

edit on 0900000025225215 by muzzy because: (no reason given)

the following 2 maps from USGS might show where they are going with the main shock
the first map is off the summary page

the 2nd one is the interactive map when you click on the first one

how long until they match them up?

have you all been taking your earthquake pills lately?

The Japs are heavy users
rightclickviewimageforfullsize

NZ on a light dosage last 6 weeks

bit of humor.

I was experimenting with Excel 2010 and went 3D with the Japan numbers count in the 1980's
Was trying to think of what the graph looked like, then did NZ and it came to me
a rack of tablets or pills, to be taken as prescribed.

I like the 'pills'!
Easy to understand for us oldsters!
When I scrolled & first saw it,
it reminded me of the Dr. Mario game!
The last one was more like Mike & Ikes candy! Ha, ha, ha!
Just not the same colors!
Do they have those in New Zealand?

No haven't seen those here, (I googled the name)
they kind of look similar to Jelly Beans but more oblong.
Glad you like the "pills" I was getting tired of the old partially 3D graphs.
I've done a few more and will load them onto the pages as time allows.
I can't seem to get the Energy graphs to do the same, as they are just one segment.

Mike Chiu of Fall City reported feeling a "strong jolt for two seconds." Karen Whitworth at Lake Marcel, south of Duvall, said it started with a low and loud rumble.
