Anyone who says that is dismissing 1,000 years of history and is more than likely simply ignorant of it, wilfully or not.

It is, however, a complex thing to define but then I am sure Indians, Russian, or Chinese would struggle to define in words what it was that they felt - the same applies to us.

For most, I think, "Britishness" is a sense of fair play, justice, personal freedom and, at times, defiance. But then it is worth noting that being "British" is only something thought of in the past couple of hundred years. There is, of course, the individual nations that make up GB to consider and each of those has it's language and culture to consider also. It isn't easy to define at al.

I see you have no regard for your ancestors who have died in battle, you have no connection to the land and ancient stone...how sad! Its good that you realise you are a human though (clap, clap)

Disconnected...that's the word I am looking for!

To be British is to be many things.

Yes, appreciating our royal past (and present) makes up a part of it, but not the majority of it.

Our self-deprecating humour, our humour in general to be fair.

Our willingness to help others, in some cases at great cost to ourselves.

Clinging on to traditional values.

Local dialects, games, even food.

Appreciating the history of our land and how it got to where it is today.

If I said to you "areet me marra, how ist fettle today, ist tha gan ter lowp awwer tha' yon yat an tek chess fre't parkie, like eh?", you would probably ask if I spoke English. But that is the language handed down over many centuries in my home county, and I try to use it as much as possible as once it is gone, it's gone.

There are many more examples of what it is to be British, it's not just about Kings and Queens.

They agreed to move to the UK for a better way of life

We should pay for them to go back home of they don't like our way or life and culture because tbh we've had enough of footing the bill and listening to there ignorance

Simple...

Of course the large majority are fully inter grated without chips on the shoulders and are more than welcome and valued

The op insinuates the media is run by the (Js)...

Maybe not the media, but they do have a hand in immigration in Europe.

Quite - in fact much of the Empire was gained solely to stop the others from expanding, such as the French or Russians. Imagine what the world would be like now if they had managed to get the land that we did?

The fact of the matter is, those countries who form the Commonwealth now are amongst the most stable and prosperous, while those of other former colonial powers are usually much less so.

The commonwealth of nations. The majority of the nations were at one point part of the our empire.
Look at some of the nations on the list, how succesful and proud they are and then tell me the British left the world WORSE than they found it.

I heard today that a Law association in the UK has published a manual for how British laws can be aligned with Sharia Law. Thank God I don't live in England.

From 9:30 onwards in the video, can you believe the nerve of the Asian guy who defines Britishness as "not having an identity"

He's partly right, depending on how you look at it.

I've done my family tree..right back to 1535.

There's Irish (Mary Kenny) from Newcastle, Co. Mayo who emigrated to England in 1846.
Theres a jew (David Levi) who emigrated from Russia to escape the pogroms in 1821, then went to Hamburg and then by boat to Hull, England.
Theres French (james Gomo) who left France in 1869.

And i've probably Roman and Viking blood somewhere aswell.

The thing is, im all these people yet I'm English. I don't feel i belong to anyone of the groups in particular, but a little bit of everyone of them makes me the whole i am, and an Englishman.

But i don'y go around forcing my heritage on the world saying they MUST accept what i am..or if not, im a racist.

Ah, the Irish, the world biggest colonising group! The Irish diaspora is unlike anything else in the world..

What the majority fail to understand, or just fail to believe is that the Irish diaspora was a thriving trade long before the famines of the 1840's..
Everyone just blames the English for starving the Irish out of Ireland, and it's not the truth, the famines just added new clients to what was already a thriving business, emigration and coffin ships. Then when they got to the States, it didn't get any better.

Well it's by the hush me boy's, and thats to keep your noise.
And listen to poor paddy's lamentation.
I was by hunger pressed and in poverty distressed,
when i took a thought to leave the Irish nation.

If I were the interviewer I would have said to here what the hell has it got to do with you how many immigrants are in the UK and what is your agenda, why do you want the UK overrun with immigrants, more importantly why don't you promote the same for your own people in your own lands?

I have a solution for you though darling, we will start a war between your people and the Arabs, that should keep your meddling people busy for a while!

Sure, the thread isn't racist at all... /sarcasm off.

It was said that immigrants to England can't claim to be British, then it was said it would be more desirable for England's descendants to come 'home'. In other words only white people can be British. But let's re-examine England's descendents. Americans betrayed England, Australians were sentenced to prison in Australia or worked the prisons. England went to South Africa to colonize it... same with the West Indies. That of course is all history and people shouldn't be judged by their ancestors actions... however, doesn't that make 'us descendants' of England as far removed as any immigrant from Pakistan, India, Africa etc... are? If I gained British citizenship and moved to London, I'd be just as much as immigrant as a Pakistani and for the record I'm white.

Furthermore, colonization and imperialism still exist and then there's the War on Terror which England is very much a part of. So between war and exploitation life is quite miserable for those trying to immigrate. Maybe if you want to keep England stark white, you should do something about causing non-whites to want to leave their native lands.

How strange is it that you have a bunch of people who's ancestors to not come from these lands talking about what it means to be British? What would happen if a bunch of white native British went on Indian national TV and started talking about what it means to be Indian?

Remember the time when British, i don't know.. for 400 yrs or so told Indian's how to be Indian?

Ze Irony.

your post is all nice and correct, except you forgot to mention that British were all around the world for hundreds of year, occupying and bringing under British Empire a LOT of different nations, ethnicities, tribes.

now they have something to say about being British?

how dare they!? they were British when it was needed of them!

take it whatever way you want but it is very simple actually.

what goes around comes around.

You do know that this point has been answered several times already in this thread, don't you?

It does help if people read the thread before commenting.

One of the things so many choose to ignore or fail to understand is that The British Empire spread and was governed and administered with the active involvement of literally millions of those people who it allegedly sugbjugated.
You see, there simply wasn't that many British alive in those days.

The Raj was effectively managed and administered by Indians themselves whilst being overseen by a relatively small number of British nationals.
The whole Indian infrastructure, which it still more or less uses today, was British designed but it relied on the willing and at time zealous support and assistance of the vast majority of Indian people.

As has been said on numerous occasions, The British Empire should really be judged by the standards of the day and not those of today.
Sure, it had its faults and excesses, all empires do, but compared to contemporary empires it really was quite benevolent.

And again, as has been said before - if the sins of the father are truly visited upon their sons then I genuinely dread to think what future generations of Americans will have to suffer.

@op.... Why don't you build a time machine, go back in time and convince British rulers that colonizing other countries isn't a good idea. Consider the current situation as PAYBACK. After all, what goes around..... You know what happens next.

Well..you do realize your growth rate of white British is zero ..if not negative ...!
Start multiplying so you don't have to import foreigners ..
You simply don't have people, projecting into the future, so your govt is importing so many muslims .. who obviously have an average of 8 kids per family ..Britain is projected to become an islamic country not too far in the future ..

Yeah lets just do that...

Stop Common Law being the most used form of governing law and conviction.

Stop the ideas and technology that formed modern day communication.

Stop the development of modern industrial structure... Which incidentally is the same structure, ideas and technology that has helped multiple nations become strong enough and able enough to be independent.

Stop trade routes that helped develop the modern world and spread technology, wealth and people.

Stop the British Empire from ever forming! it's the worst empire of all and has done nothing at all to help us as a human race get to where we are... Well it just hasn't has it?

BTW that was sarcasm and although I only picked four points out of an endless list I could have chose, I believe they are strong enough to prove that Britain has by it's own merit helped create the branches that hold the leaves of the modern world up.

If you don't like that or anything Britain has achieved, please be my guest to boycott your phones, PC's, electricity, clean sanitation etc etc etc. Because we have a strong part in the birth of such things, anything with British influence is after all inherently bad.

Apologies for the that... All over the place rant. Fact is Britain with all it's flaws was and is a good idea, you water down a spirit though and you get a piss poor substandard drink.

That old chestnut.

So what is it?

Too many ASBO children from poor deprived neighborhoods or not enough white British being born... From my experience I have seen plenty of white children born in these Emerald Isles, I see no shortage of white children in Ireland, Wales or northern England.
